For me, this book started out slowly. But, giving it time, it really took off! Publisher was right about the ending: It was awesome and totally stunning! Great book! First book I have read of Lisa Hall's. Looking forward to more. Great writer!

It always amazes me when books are written with poor grammar. Did the writer and editor both fail English? The misuse of me & I and is & are killed me. And the verbal abuse gave me anxiety. Not an enjoyable read for me.

Just a bit unrealistic, I was fine with the book, until the end when she was him and he was her. No way he was the abused, the physical strength of a man, doesn't matter how small or skinny he can be always is stronger than a woman, unless he has a physical disability.

Honestly, I saw this "twist" coming pretty early in this book. I don't say this to be holier-than-thou, it just left me feeling really pretty flat about this book, and if it is not for that, there isn't muc hto recommend this book. This is literally the first review I have written for the store, because I felt like I had to voice my disappointment.

SPOILERS FOLLOW

The language in some parts of the the book I found to be awkward, e.g., "my partner" vs. "my wife" or "my husband", the use of androgynous names and the concerted effort not to use pronouns to me seemed pretty pronounced. And like others have said before me, there is no reason to somehow tranform this into a "psychological thriller" based on the expectations of the audience. I finished it, but it was "meh" - I wanted to get to the end of it to prove what I expected pretty early on.

A very sad and realistic story about spousal abuse. It really upset me at first . As the story developed I realized the abuse was a continuation of her abuse. Many people are abused by loved ones. Maybe this story will help them to free themselves before it's too late.

A well written book and a page turrner. I honestly did not see the incredible twist comming at the end. I doubt that any reader would have picked up, right from the beginning, that no reference were made to Sal and Charlies gender.

I really enjoyed this book. I usually can guess the ending but not this one. Very surprising. A great author. Hope there are more of
her books out there. I think it would be hard to top this one. Keep writing

This book was poorly written. End of story. I don't care if I guess the "surprise" ending as long as I enjoy the writing along the way, but I cannot say that here. Very amateur, nothing about it rang true and I'd say it's borderline disrespectful to victims of domestic abuse because the author seemingly took no time to research the mindset of someone who stays in an abusive relationship. I basically felt conned the whole way through. I now understand why this book cost less than $1.

I think it lacked a little in character development especially of the supporting characters, parents, neighbor, etc. Over all it was an okay read and it did keep you wondering, guessing what was going to happen next.

The book definitely had me hooked for the first 100 pages, but by then, I had the twist figured out. Once it hit me, reading the rest of the book was honestly, a bit hard to get through, as half of the fun of reading it was to find out what the touted twist was, and I ended up skimming the last half of it. Well written and suspenseful, and I commend this author's debut, but it just doesn't have enough chops for me to read another one of hers.

This book has it's characters following the narcissistic path to a "T" with the victim being that pleaser who gets sucked in and the controlling narc feeling all big and in charge... And then there is the twist at the end that is subtly hinted at throughout the book. Great read, could not put it down!

I liked the way it was written from the viewpoint of both the husband and wife. Not too much I didn't like. It was really written so that I just wanted to keep reading. Loved it and looking forward to reading more from Lisa Hall.

I just finished reading this book today and I thought it was very misleading. I don't like how no pronouns were ever used until the last few chapters in the book. Definitely disappointed but it passed the time on the subway.

I wondered all throughout the book if the twist was something and it turns out I was right, however I don’t know how I feel about it. I feel that it is a twist that could be done with literally any book and, although it must have been hard to keep up with it while writing the book, it just wasn’t that exciting.

Up until the end chapters, the story held my interest. As for the twist of the story, I found it to be rather confusing as to how it was written. The use of the characters names relating to females then males and so forth did not do much for an ending. Not quality writing in my opinion.

The last few chapters are totally messed up! Whoever proofed this book needs to find another job! The main characters are reversed and are presumed to be male. I can't believe that a publisher can release this book with all the grammatical errors throughout. It was a total waste of time! I would not recommend any of her books! Sorry Lisa Hall

This book was mistakenly labelled as a psychological thriller, it was not. It was a story of a battered wife who got fed up. In the last few chapters the gender of the characters were switched, as if the author decided to write an alternate ending which made it feel like it was self published with no editing.
