I love mysteries and was looking for another author to read. I picked up this book and hoped I had a new source of reading. This book is not the best I've ever read. The story was fine, but I thought it was slow moving and not a book that I just couldn't put down. Not far into the book the main character (a newly promoted detective) suspects (or should suspect) one of two other police officers of the crime, but doesn't act on his suspicions. Also, I live not far from Boston and found it irritating that most of the characters had Irish names (Murphy, Sullivan, Quinn, Walsh, Duffy) as though everyone in Boston is Irish. It seemed as though the author was lazy in naming the characters. Will I purchase another book by this author? I don't think so.

I enjoyed this story primarily because of Danny Sullivan, the lead character. The author gave us an up-close look at Sullivan and his family, bringing in lot of questions regarding family obligations, career achievement, and what really matters most in life. The mystery itself involved questions beyond "whodunit", delving into personal thoughts and feelings.

On the downside, the clues to the killer were almost too obvious. In fact, my thoughts were "It can't possibly be him because the author is trying so hard to make us believe it is." The killer's motive seemed weak, and in addition, the reader was able to view scenes occuring outside of the detective's point of view, making us privvy to information he didn't have. I would have preferred to solve the crime using only the information Danny Sullivan had.

Overall, a good read, and one that kept me turning the pages, eager to finish. I would recommend the book to mystery lovers who like the police procedural genre, and I plan to read more stories by the author.

I stumbled across this book one day, probably checking the latest Kindle offerings, so I decided to give this author a try. I loved it. The plot was good, the characters well developed, it was well edited, and it can be read in an evening. So I immediately read the next 3 -- Dallas, then Miami then Chicago. I then started on the Jason Strong series and ripped through those pretty quickly -- all just as good as the Homicide series, and just as readable. Since I am out of Homicide and Jason Strong, I decided to start on the Chaser Chronicles in the hope they will be as entertaining as the previous two series. In the meantime, I would love to read more Homicide books AND Jason Strong books.

If you like mysteries, you will love the City Murders series. I've read them all, and as I said in another review, John Dalglish soared to the top of my list of f favorite authors. His characters are believable, his plot is strong, and he's a great storyteller. Even though they are said to be stand-alone novels, which is true, I'd recommend reading them in order. Some characters move with him as he weaves another tale, so for this reason, i think you would enjoy the stories more if you read them in order.

Danny Sullivan is the first policeman in three generations of his family to become a detective. His wife Cass is in her ninth-month of her pregnancy, when her husband is promoted. Neither realizes the amount of overtime Danny will have to work.
Additionally his father and his grandfather didn't detectives because they wanted to family to come fIrst.
When Danny's tenacity helps him solve a major crime case, his former partner suggests to the Police Chief of Boston to assign him to the newly formed Cold Case Squad. This allows Danny to work regular hours and keep his detective shield.
Twists and turns makes this an interesting read.

When I rate books, it's based on their particular genre, and I think this deserves an A+. It moved quickly, didn't get bogged down with unnecessary descriptions or product placement, and best of all, it was proofread! This is important, and having a good proofreader makes reading a pleasure and not cringe-worthy.
So....characters were good, dialogue was believeable, plot made sense, and I think Mr Dalglish nailed it! Good job!

employed by the author. The entire book was believable and entertaining. Since most of us know where babies come from, no explanations were needed when the wife of the main character entered the story pregnant. The crimes did not include sexual assault, and yet were described with sufficient detail for the reader to get the picture. The little surprise at the end of the book was a nice touch. Will read more by this author.

Danny Sullivan is married with his first child on the way. He has just made detective. He is partner with Murphy who is going to show him the ropes. their first case is coming up a woman is found dead she has been raped and beaten very badly. When he starts to put the pieces together and thinks he might know who is doing he is shock. Great read I enjoyed it

Defintely in suspense and unsure of who dunnit, with many solid possibilites throughout. I realized I arrived at the conclusion along with the detective and not a moment sooner. Personal stories of the character were woven well with the main plot. The case was not the only suspense in the story. Thoroughly enjoyed this read and excited to have found a new to me author that writes good, clean suspense!

It is so refreshing to read a really good mystery without the filth that accompanies many books in this genre. I'm glad there are still writers, and publishers, too, who are willing to look at what some of the public desire in material that's interesting, entertaining, and without compromising our values. There's plenty of stuff out there for people who don't care about obscene and degrading content. Thank you for considering this segment of society.

Danny is promoted to detective on the Boston police. He's immediately on a case of a murdered woman. When the second woman is found, the FBI does a study and suggests that because there are very few clues that the purpetrator might be someone in the police or healthcare. Danny begins following up on the gray car seen at one of the murders. When he tells his boss it might be police, he gets sent home and taken off the case. This just makes Danny more suspicious. He continues to detect, and finds a silver car behind the bus in the bus video of the first murder. Any more description will spoil the plot. It's a good story and Danny is finally believed.

I really enjoyed the read. Great story line, plot and ending. I gave it a four due to several grammatical errors. I thought I had miss read the sentence and would reread only to find missing words or incorrect words. I read a lot so it's just something I notice. All in all it was a great book!

This story held my interest although it seemed alittle short but maybe that was just because it was so interesting. Not terribly complicated but the characters are fairly well developed.. enough that I grew to be interested in them. I will read this author again.

Loved that it was in Boston. Reminded me of Blue Bloods, with Irish Catholic cop family. The author built his plot with foreshadowing and was fair with the reader with the conclusion, providing enough clues to solve it with Danny. The language was a bit simplistic but that provided a quick read. I will read more by this author.

After reading Dalglish's John Strong series and loving it, it took me a little while to get into this novel. I was familiar with the other characters and struggled to begin this one. Needless to say, once involved, I had to read it to completion. Meaning, I couldn't put it down.

Read number of books written by this author, they all have likeable characters you can relate too. Danny Sullivan is just promoted to sergeant, he is about to become father. Has big loving family and both father and grandfather was retired police officers. They each gave him good support and advice, he understood and made his choices. Liked the ending.

Meet newly promoted Detective Danny Sullivan, third generation cop, who gets assigned to Senior Detective Murphy and an unsolved murder of a woman. As the case progresses, another woman is murdered and the case takes on new meaning. Dalglish's writing skills keep you glued to the pages all the way to the last one. Thanks for letting me get to know another writer and a new series. Don't pass this one up. Looking forward to the next one.

This was an excellent book. The suspense had me reading late into the night. Danny Sullivan was a honest detective who knew what was right and wrong, and not to just overlook murders for sake of who you are.

Thank you to John Dalglish for writing quality novels without including vulgar language and sordid sex scenes. This is well written, with characters that have substance and are sympathetic and engaging. I’m so weary of reading books that have no heroes, no true “good guys” when I know for a fact that they do indeed exist in the law enforcement community. Good plot, quick read, well done!

It was not very long. Bigger than a short story, but shorter than your typical novel. There were a couple of typos and some of the conversations seemed a bit strained. Overall, it was entertaining though. It makes you grieve for all of the young ladies who are treated like the ones in this book. It probably happens a lot more than we would like to think.

Fast, entertaining read. Nice to get to know Danny and his family, and still
have an intriguing who-done-it to try to figure out.
It is good to know this author has more books out there for us to read.

Boston Homicide is a great book. It holds your interest as the mystery is solved. It is rare to find a book with no profanity or vulgarity. It also ends with the importance of a great family life. Loved it!

The character development was good. And it had decent plotting. I would consider reading another novel by author. Back in the day, I spent a little time in the Boston area this. Brought back some memories.

I just finished reading Boston Homicide and I think Danny Sullivan is going places in the BPD. This was a good, clean and yet a great police story and it keeps you guessing who the bad guy is....I like that. I like the fact that we're getting to know Danny and his family at the very beginning of his career as a Detective. It makes you feel closer to the people in the book.
I'll be waiting for book 2 in the near future. Great work, John Dalglish.

I really enjoyed this book. I’m ready to start on book 2 of the series. How nice it is to find an author who can write a good story without using bad language and smutty scenes. The story makes it on its own merits.

A very enjoyable book, it is suspenseful and keeps one guessing. I enjoyed his main character and found that he did spend time on the back story. I will be reading more of his books and definitely recommend this book as a good read.

Good writing. I particularly appreciated the family values portrayed in the story. I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. It's good to be able to do so without concern over any gratuitous scenes being included.

Sex, violence, and foul language was nil. This one earns an easy five stars for being clean. The story was interesting and I liked the characters. Once into it I didn't want to stop.

If you like mysteries without smut, I highly recommend this one.

Boston Homicide is a great suspenseful action packed murder mystery. John C. Dalglish proves that you can write great mysteries WITHOUT foul language and overt sexual scenes. He proved this with his Detective Jason Stone mysteries and continues to do it again and again. I look forward to the rest of this series.
