I am looking forward to the next installment of the series and would recommend this series to everyone. I am disappointed that it has yet to be released in an audible version as they are even more enjoyable read aloud.

I have recently finished with Book # 4. I have also loved reading the other Carew stories. The way each ends wants you to be able to read the next even before it's published. So Please get #5 done soon. I hope it will be out at the beginning of 2017......

Wonderful, I really like this series. I consider it my favorite. Great narration and story, can't wait for next book. I highly recommend it, especially if you like stories from the old British Royal Navy except in space. I hope audio book is out soon.
Valor At Vauzlee (A Galaxy Unknown Book 2) :: The Clones of Mawcett (A Galaxy Unknown Book 3) :: Return to Dakistee (A Galaxy Unknown Book 8) :: Trader Vyx (A Galaxy Unknown Book 4) :: In Ashes Born (A Seeker's Tale From The Golden Age Of The Solar Clipper Book 1)

Overall a good continuation of the series. Loved the new adventure as a patrol ship in the colonial systems. But the overall rating for me would be a 3.5 in this book because there were somethings that really bugged me.

All the drinking. Every time she is sitting down it seems she is having a drink. The author wants to show PST in her but with the amount she is drinking I have to wonder how she is sober enough to command anything. It's never resolved in the book and I am not looking forward to any future plot device that happens because she is too drunk at a critical moment. As this will likely lead to another thing she blames herself with. Another thing that bugged me was all the self blaming for everything that goes wrong throughout the book. I kept wishing some other character would step up already and tell her that she can't keep everyone safe but only try her best. The self-blaming is left unresolved and again not looking forward to some possible metal breakdown plot it could lead to in the future.

Other than that I loved the overall adventure in an isolated part of space with possibility of ghost ships and mysterious ship disappearances. Definitely a must read if you have read the others in the series. Definitely looking forward to the next book and hoping for more adventure and less drinking.

I enjoyed the first three books of this series but was disappointed with the portrayal of Christians as a violent cult and Muslims as victims. The historical conflict with the Barbary Pirates would have been a much better context.

The strong female lead will appeal to Honor Harrington fans, while the technology of the ships and the method of fighting them will appeal to fans of Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey, as well as fans of David Drake's RCN books.
The way the main character grows through the series is believable and keeps the reader interested in the character. The other characters are less well-developed, and I could wish there was a little more to them than stereotypes, but it doesn't really detract from the pleasure of reading. The pace of the stories is good, never tempting keeping the reader to skim until the next action takes place.
Alexis Carew is a very human woman, with strengths and weaknesses, one who makes mistakes and learns from them, and who takes her duties seriously. As the father of four daughters, I like seeing good military sci-fi that isn't all about "Preston of the Spaceways" types.
I also bought the audio book, (LOVE Whispersync!) and the narration was excellent.

The fourth installment of the Alexis Carew novels is a little slower than those preceding it. It has less action, and the action is less exciting. However, it isn't bad. I enjoyed it and will read the next book if here is one. Character development is okay, although I'm not sure anyone reads this kind of story for character development. The writing is a little lazy and the book could have used a good copy editor--there are misplaced apostrophes, missing words, and expository paragraphs that are repeated almost verbatim within a few pages of each other. That said, the series does not yet suffer from the egregious bloat that eventually made me give up on the Honor Harrington novels. The plot moves along at a decent pace, leading to a rousing speech and climactic battle.

Another good installment in the series but not the best of the four. Although our MC has her first command as an assignment, the pace of the story moves rather slowly and our hero is not at her best. The PTSD issues are probably realistic but it doesn't add much to the story and lessens the enjoyment and fun of the book. With that said, I still liked the book and will definitely read the next one.

In book for Alexis is struggling with the loss of her ship and men in book 3. The Navy sends her to captain a small revenue ship crewed with the dregs of the Navy.

Unlike previous ships she isn't able to pull this ship together - and she struggles with the deaths of her crew she caused fighting to protect the fleeing refugees in book 3.

Enjoyable but a darker book in many ways.

As a fan of the Honor Harrington series, David Drake's RCN (Daniel Leary) series and Horatio Hornblower (still haven't gotten around to the books but the A&E movie series is super excellent), I gave to say Alexis shows some of the best parts of each. As a plus, 4 books in and she's still a lieutenant which means she has plenty left to do. And we already know there are plenty of things for her to stick her nose into, or am I thinking of Boots?

This is easily my favorite series on Unlimited. I am a bit partial to the age of sail epics and so fell right into Sutherland's concept. I particularly love the slow character development. You can see her grow as a character and develop her own set of issues. But Sutherland stretches that development out. There are no major revelations that immediately fix her poor navigational skills or PTSD. She's neither brilliant, nor blessed with tremendous advantage and I really appreciate that. This particular book was a little heavy on the exposition and a regular editing error were the only downsides that I could see. Overall, loved this addition and looking forward to the next one.

HMS Nightingale (Alexis Carew Book 4, finds our heroine transformed to the Nightingale, a small ship prowling the edges of the void, looking for smugglers, tax cheats, and pirates, Things go south quickly with a crew over fast-food, closed minded colonies, and the return of Alexis's would-be suitor.
The story's tight, and well written, with interesting people, it's a welcome addition to the series.

This book carries Alexis forward in her career as she takes her first official command. She inherits a motley crew and finds herself in the thick of action once again. I am sure to read these books often and I'll be waiting for the next book to be published so I can dive back into the next phase me f her story. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes David Weber.

I have been enjoying this series and in some ways consider this the best one yet. Be warned however that a lot of it won't have the same impact if you haven't read the previous books. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in this series. In particular I appreciated the author's decision to ascribe some more long lasting impacts to traumatic events in the previous books.
