I anxiously waited this series after devouring the Witching Savannah series and Jilo as well as other writings.
I was a bit confused throughout this book. I do not speak French, I don’t understand many of the Greek god references made and I had a difficult time keeping up as each chapter spun off into different places depending on the characters. I constantly had to look up terms and references. Some terms had no definition I could find. That made it a very tedious read. I’ve spent time in New Orleans so I was familiar with many of the places, streets and general vibe of it.
I’m not sure I’ll continue the series when new books are released.

I like stories about new Orleans witches so the description drew me to this book. It went along really well and then got a little jumbled when the real action started. I lost track of who was who for a little while. All done now and while there are still things left unclear, it has not made me not want to read more :)

J.D. Horne writes of New orleans and witches and death in this first book of the series. Magic is leaving the world and it has to be stopped. The characters are mostly a family of witches who are very dysfunction with human and supernatural problems. It is up to one person to help the situation. If you read the Savannah witches, you will appreciate the story details and various plots what are tied together. most intriguing and presents New Orleans in a new supernatural light.

I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I have purchased the Kindle version for my own library.

The Chaticleer Coven is in trouble. Magic is fading from New Orleans and the coven is suffering along with other covens. Although some non-witches and non-believers are unaware of the effects on the witches, they are drawn into the fray when the current patriarch of the coven passes and evil comes calling.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am anxiously awaiting the next installment. The complex mix of characters is what draws me to J.D. Horn's books. This book was a little bit difficult to follow with the sheer number of characters but if you can keep them straight, they all show their place in the story. (Thus the 4 stars)

The descriptions of New Orleans are as you'll see in person or in pictures or on the screen. JD has a way of making you want to visit the places he writes about real, or imaginary. The many dimensional worlds give an interesting view of the possibilities of where the characters will end up.

Thank you for another very enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to the next installment of the New Orleans Witch Series and the Chanticleer Coven.

I never realized how much I love urban fantasy until recently, but it is quickly becoming one of my favourite genres to read. And this book is such a fantastic addition to the genre.

One of the things I loved about the story was the pacing. This was not a very fast-paced story, but the slower pace worked very well because it allowed for the development of the darker elements. And the dark aspects of the story were worth waiting for! I knew this story wasn't going to be a lighthearted read but even I was taken aback by the sheer evil mentioned in this book - and I loved it! The writing style that the author used was also perfect for building up tension in the plot and between the different characters. There was also no fakeness to any of the character interactions or situations; every remark, every scene was carefully crafted and served a higher purpose of solidifying the themes of the story.

There were quite a few characters to keep track of, and I will admit that I struggled here a bit. The author definitely did a great job of making each of them unique, but I would find myself forgetting how everyone was related or how old the characters were. The author does provide a helpful list of characters at the end of the book, but I wouldn't recommend readers look at it while they are still reading the story because some of the descriptions of the characters can be spoilers.

But the plot was to die for: it was gripping, dark, and scary. It was everything I could ask for in an urban story centered around powerful witch families and covens.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this dark urban fantasy set in New Orleans. The characters, writing style, and eerie plot were absolutely amazing and I am definitely going to be reading more books by this author in the near future!

I received this novel as an advance copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed The King of Bones and Ashes! One thing J. D. Horn does really well is transporting the reader to the location of his stories. I felt like I was in New Orleans when I read it. He gets the details right every time which lends authenticity to the story and I absolutely appreciate every single one of those details!

This book is a paranormal family drama involving the powerful with families of New Orleans. I really enjoyed the character building that took place (and this book has a lot of that), but be warned this is a slow process. It is totally worth the investment of time though, and Horn sets up this new world perfectly for the adventures to come.

The story is told from multiple points of view, and it can be a little bit of a struggle to keep everything straight. I am hoping the next book there's a little less jumping around.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and felt fully immersed in these families and New Orleans. I can't wait to see what comes next!

Having read and enjoyed the Savannah witches, I thought I'd give the New Orleans witches a try. Good storyline, with lots of twists and turns. Very hard too keep up with it all until the very last chapters tie it all together. Don't let that stop you from enjoying a good book. Highly recommend it.

I absolutely loved this book! I took a chance because it's not a genre I normally read, but it hooked me within minutes and, since reading The King of Bones and Ashes, I couldn't wait to read The Book of the Unwinding, and now I'm waiting for the Final Days of Magic with bated breath. But I have to wait until Spring!!!! In the meantime, I've started reading his/her Witches of Savannah series. I love it!!!!! Am on the second book in that series and it is superb! J.D. Horn is a really good writer and s/he has totally sucked me into the world of witches, be they in New Orleans or Savannah.
