This book really helps me understand a lot of the basic concepts of chemistry, with great explanations and illustrations and fun facts. I bought this book because I am trying to mentally prepare myself for my first college chem 1 course and so far, i love the explanations this book has to offer. It really breaks things down and even shows examples of chem problems. I would reccommend this for any college or high school students taking chemistry or preparing to take it. Overall, great book.

When learning chemistry for the first time I found this book very useful. It is a great reference tool for anyone learning basic chemistry and a valuable book for students learning chemistry for the first time, or past students that need to revise basic chemistry concepts. If you need an easy to understand basic reference guide to chemistry, this is your book.

Doing college chemistry and my professor uses the Chang textbook, which I find to be a difficult text. I bought Chemistry for Dummies hoping it would help me fill in the gaps where I needed extra explanation...it totally has done that so far. Between this book and Chang, I think I might survive chemistry...! I recommend this to anyone who finds it helpful to have things explained in more than one way. It just seems to help some of the more difficult concepts "click" a little faster/easier.

For me this could be a situation where they could pick up a book from the publisher and decider it. My college used Lewis structure a lot and I really stumbled. This book has lots of great info. Just not the help I was looking for. Used for chem 101.

Received the book today.
Yet to read Chemistry part.
Requested exchange today.
There is physical copy problem (photos attached).
First one and half chapters of the actual Chemistry book, are missing from this copy.
Instead, three and half chapters from a different book ("Machine Learning for Dummies") are included at the beginning.
So, first 35-36 pages are "Machine Learning for Dummies" book pages.
From page 36-37, Chemistry starts suddenly from middle of chapter 2.
Even the "Table of Contents" is from "Machine Learning for Dummies" book.

See I was a dummie before purchasing this book, strugled with my first few chemistry exams, but with this book and its breakdown I have been able to gain a much clearer understanding of what I was actually reading in chemistry class, much easier to read than the 200 dollar textbook with just as much information at a 1/20th the price (which is a joke to me). Any students in need of help with Chemstry, get a tutor lol, or get this book.

Chemistry for Dummies has been a tried and true chemistry book for my students who may be learning their first chemistry or reviewing chemical principles after a long time away from school. We have greatly enjoyed the coverage of the 2003 book for its simple format and simple explanations. As students (ages 19 - 60's) learning hazardous materials, the simple approach and brief overview of other topics, i.e. organic chemistry, petroleum, synthetics, and household hazardous products is very helpful in their choice of profession.
In the 2011 2nd edition it is good to see the 2003 appendices go away and have become a separate chapter (2). My students do complain that the 2011 edition has been made more complicated and several good parts from the earlier edition have been left out, i.e. the organic intro, petroleum, etc. I totally agree with them. With a very short time to teach an overview of chemistry (32 hours), students need to learn the basics atomic principles of atoms, ions, atomic sub particle placement, and the roles of protons and electrons. What isn't needed at this level is Quantum mechanics (QM). Students need to know about orbitals (energy levels), how many total electrons fill them and the Octet rule to successfully understand the basics of ionic and covalent bonding and basic chemical reactions. . The QM breakdown into sub orbitals (s, p, d, f) is more than they need The 2011 increased emphasis on QM diminishes the value of the text at a basic level. Explanation of the periodic table geography simplifies its organization, trends and use and speeds up student understanding and retention. QM is above this basic level of a need to know and complicates a grasp of the basic fundamentals.
Now I carry 2 Chemistry for Dummies books - both the 2003 and 2011 editions. Students should not have to do this. Both books are well written, but the 2011 changes for my student audience confuse rather than clarify their grasp of very basic chemistry principles. Reluctantly, I am searching for another student text that will meet the original intent of the 2003 Chemistry for Dummies.

I have seen this company provide better books. This book was not so clear and detailed as other dummie books. Study your text book, use your Ti-84 calculator ad ask your local college professor for help. You'll do fine without this book.

This is a great book. The authors write about chemistry very well. I found this book to be a great review of General Chemistry I. The authors other book Biochemistry for Dummies is also very good. I read this book and Biochemistry for dummies all the time.

I have to take a preparatory chemistry class at my community college this fall so I was hoping this book might help me prepare before hand. But I have found it to be confusing, although witty in the writing style used, it did nothing for me in actually learning a thing. I actually was lucky enough to find an AMAZING website that has a free PDF.file text book that is very easy to follow and comprehend (as easy as any level of "chemistry" can be)! Just my thoughts! Good luck to anyone who is much sharper than I am or is just looking for a good read to possible appreciative this branch of science!

I bought this for my high schooler, taking IB Chem and she loves it. So I bought another copy for my other high schooler taking honors Chem. Also loves it. (I know, why can't they share the book, right? So the second copy is a used book) They both like it better than their textbooks.

A great book. My only regret is not ordering this book sooner. TRUST ME, if you study this book in addition to the Chem 1 book, you will Ace General Chemistry. Trust me, and I'm not the strongest math or science person.

This (e-)book helps me revisit my High School Chemistry in a minimal approach. I would love to see more elaborate discussion surrounding Redox reactions. In addition, it could touch a little bit on Organic Chemistry as it discusses about the environments and chemistry.

This book was really interesting. I bought it to get a jump start with my chemistry class. This book leaves out almost every thing I needed to learn (MEMORIZE) which would have been handy. If your looking for help, your better off searching free websites.

It's great for beginners who want to learn chemistry, but it's not exactly thorough enough in helping you fully understand and solve the problems that come with chemistry. A note of caution When Purchasing Chemistry For Dummies buy the Chemistry for Dummies workbook as well.

I got this book to refresh my chemistry knowledge. Sorry to say so, but this book has nothing to do with it's name and money are wasted. The author just randomly put in "easy going" phrases, while all the important facts are over categorized or covered with unimportant facts. I got a much better understanding of chemistry when I was reading college chemistry books. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
