Bought these for our 11-year-old son for Christmas (yes, he wanted periodic table stuff for Christmas). These cards are stunning and very well done. Our son is memorizing these and teaching them to his 9-year-old brother too. Great buy.

Got these for my daughter, who likes the elements. Nice big cards, cool pictures, fair bit of info. Once she even set them up on the floor in the form of a big periodic table. (Eventually I wanted my floor back, so now they're a deck again.)

Very educational and a great gift for the science lover in your family

Pros
- Comes with every single element on a card and an example for each one
- Cards are large and easy to read
- Good for the young ones

Cons
- No cons

Overall my son loved it, so if he loves it, I love it.

I purchased these for my daughter to study her elements for Chemistry. Her teacher was so impressed with them that she ordered some too! Wonderful learning tools. Very cool to get a picture to associate the elements with - makes it more real.

I got all three of Theo Gray's Element publications. I got the cards in order to give a presentation on Mendeleev's development of the periodic law. The cards allow you to select only the elements knows in 1869, and to study some of the physical properties of those elements. The the challenge posed is, how to find order. This is much more useful than simply revealing the periodic table as if it had been inscribed on one of the tablets brought down by Moses.

I agree with other reviews the cards should be sturdier for regular use by students. Our boys are 6 and 9. They are homeschooled and I wanted something to reinforce their elementary Chemistry lessons and use their age-based skill of effective memorization. This works for us and the kiddos are drawn to the pictures as oppose to our other information containing text/numbers. There is far more information on these cards then we will years in the immediate years so I like that the boys will grow into these over much time. This is a good resource for our homeschool.

Whether you are an elementary schoolteacher or a theoretical physicist, you'll love these cards. They contain most of the information you'll ever need on an element and have far more physical and chemical property detail than any other reference (outside of a handbook). They're beautiful to look at, fun to flip through, and whether you're a child interested in science or a seasoned professional, you'll learn a lot about the elements that you didn't know. We all have a lot to learn about the building blocks of the universe, and these are an excellent resource.

All of the information is from the associated book (The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe) which is also quite a nice coffee table book. Neither the book nor the cards are references exactly, but, as per the title, photographic explorations. Truly for the coffee table, take a look, learn something, pass the book to someone else sort of learning. It's not at all an in-depth reference book.

So much for what it's not, but what does it have? Nice heavy cardstock paper for the cards, mostly excellent photos, including for some of the elements that I would have had a very hard time figuring out what image to use. The use of some of the rare earths in lighting is perhaps overused in the book, but that's a direct result of the even/flat treatment of the element. Iron and nickel rate no more or less space that Yttrium and Ytterbium.

Best for the kids rather than the chemistry major, but fun regardless.

I bought these for myself, embarrassingly enough, so I could memorize the elements and their properties. I had no real reason for doing it, but I have felt a little bit smarter ever since. Nine year-olds do the same thing now, I guess, but why? The human memory has become almost entirely superfluous thanks to Google, spellcheck, alarm clocks, hard drives and tattoos. I have no complaints with the quality of the cards, on the informational or atomic level. I just need to read them, not throw them at fruit. Although, I have always wanted to learn how to do that.

These cards are excellent aids to learning about the elements. Perhaps they could be better, but that will "always" be the case since these are essentially oversized index cards providing basic (yet specific) information on each of the elements. No - they do not have all information, how could they.

I have used them with my daughter playing guessing games. I have used them with my college level classes for engineering students to supplement lessons (i.e. on nuclear power via exposure to information on Plutonium and Uranium). I have enjoyed flipping through them at a glance.

If you find that from time to time your interests/occupation brings you to moments where you need to (of better yet like to) focus attention on the elements as a non-chemist these are a wonderful collection of cards.

Brilliant idea

These cards are top notch! The photos are beautiful, engaging and high quality. Great study tool!

Each 5x5 inch card includes (Nickel used as example, but all cards have the same structure) -
Front / Picture side: element name, element symbol, atomic number and atomic weight
Back side: density, melting point, boiling point, electronegativity, valance/block/group/period, electron shells, % in universe, % in Earth's crust, % in oceans, % in humans, history/discovery of element, depiction of atomic structure and atomic radius

This is the same information and pictures you will find in the book. However, my daughter found the flash cards more appealing and easier to study than a book or chart of the table of the elements. She has easily memorized numerous elements using these cards.
I have recommended these to my friends.

These cards have clearly been made with intelligence and passion. They're not great as flashcards, unfortunately, because the elements are identified on both sides. This makes them similarly ineffective for memory games like "concentration." The glossy surface scratches easily, which may be a problem depending on how you plan to use them.

LOVE these cards and the book they are based from. These are great for classroom or personal use. I have found that kids as young as first grade enjoy reading about the elements. These cards include real photographs, which kids love. I have found that they prefer these realistic pictures and information to the cartoon versions that are made for kids.

The cards are very nice, well made, beautiful full color pictures. Just wish there was more information about each element on the cards. Worked better for my daughter in 5th grade for her chemistry class than for my college chemistry class. Really beautiful pictures of each element though.
