It started off nicely enough...some pace but then totally bogged down mid-book. Relationships, people talking, blah, blah, blah. Where did the plot disappear to? Oh look, it's back....not that it was that good. Another observation: here's a guy who just lost his new wife only 4 months ago but there's no grief, mourning, self-loathing...nothing. He just get back on board with a new flame and off he goes. The previous book had one of the lousiest ending I've ever read. This book started off well, then....oh well, I already said all that.

For someone who has only been writing the past few years, Wayne Stinnett is masterful at creating drama. This novel, as well as others in the series, are all connected to one particular man, That former Marine and his friends/cohorts form a bond which is so tight they give their lives to each other for the sole purpose of supporting the Homeland Security in that area. Stinnett must be a serious student of navigation. You will learn much about the waters in Key West and the Caribbean, the tides, the stars, and the a goodly amount about the people who live there. I have been taken in by his stories and read them all. Now I have to wait for him to write another. This like others, moves along quickly. It is action packed and relevant in the description of today's world of drug running and crime.

I wanted to like this series in spite of this author's poor grasp of the English language and the nuances of syntax and grammar. I had visions of the return of Travis McGee and friends. Boy, I missed the mark there. After two and a half books it dawned on me the main protagonist Jesse McDermitt is a walking ego. Everything has to be self-centric for him. The Corps apparently did not instill the willingness to follow orders nor did it instill the respect for superiors. His learning curve is quite shallow. His wife in the last book was killed because of dumb mistakes he made. Now he is involving his current girlfriend and best friend's daughter in his misadventures in this book. This is not a spoiler because at this point I tossed the book into the recycle bin. End of series for me as there are too many good authors out there.

Jesse gets involved in getting Trent out of running drugs for Santiago as he and his family were under threat from Santiago. Along the way, Jesse meets Tina a new lady, who gets close until the time to take down Santiago, then Jesse and Duece, along with Art are injured, and Tina walks away, telling Jesse that she's not going to be in his life because she can't be the type of woman who is ok with the danger and not knowing whether or not he's coming back from the mission. Jesse also finds that when his wife, Alex, was killed, he's inherited her entire estate, almost 10 million dollars, and it's easy to follow-up on things he and Alex had talked about before she was killed. It's a great story, filled with action and everything else that you'll find as you read what happens.

This story is the sequel to "Fallen Palm." It's been four months since Jesse McDermitt was married...for one day as his wife had been kidnapped, brutally raped and murdered on that day. Since then Jesse has been in retreat on his small island in the Florida Keys. Lieutenant Commander Russell "Deuce" Livingston Jr. is team leader for a Caribbean terrorist assault team with the Department of Homeland Security. He had previously asked for Jesse's assistance to scatter his father's ashes, but now, he's asking Jesse to join the task force to bring down a major smuggler, Carlos Santiago...the same man who has threatened Carl Trent, a shrimp fisherman, who made one trip for Santiago carrying drugs into the USA. It's not for him, and now he's put his family in danger. Jesse will provide sanctuary for Trent's family, and also join the task force to bring down Santiago. Wayne Stinnett is a prolific author and his stories get better and better. This story is well written, has strong defined characters, well edited, easy to read, and one I could not set down for very long. Highly recommend.

Jesse McDermitt, a warrior, was reputed to be one of the best Marine Recon Snipers in the Corp. He was now retired from the Marine Corps, and had been living the good life in the Keys. He had met, and fallen in love with a wonderful woman, Alex, only to have his new wife kidnapped on their wedding night. She had been brutally, savagely, raped and murdered.

Lt. Commander Russell "Deuce" Livingston was team leader, and former SEAL, for a Caribbean Terrorist interdiction team with the Department of Homeland Security. They needed Jesse. They needed his unique skill set. It had been four months, but hurt has deep roots. Deuce knew that Jesse might not be ready, or willing, to dedicate his life to a covert mission.

The destination was questionable, a tiny island in the middle of nowhere. DHS spooks were predictable in that they were very unpredictable. Pescador had killed the man who'd killed Alex, and nearly killed Jesse with a switchblade. Dog and man had a tight unbreakable bond. The folks "who managed to eke out a living on these islands for generations are a hard bunch." Jesse was still considered an outsider, though most admired him, and his actions.

Carlos Santiago was connected to the Mariel people. He was a bad wind drug dealer. Jesse had plans to become a go-between to get Carl Trent off the hook. A ruse set Jesse up as a substitute Captain on Carl's shrimp boat. Jesse infiltrated Santiago' s drug and gun running operation. These were dangerous liaisons. Touch and go operations. New Friends. New allies. A new side-kick girlfriend. Alex had left Jesse a fortune. He knew where it was needed the most. Brace yourself for hard hitting, no pulled punches adventure. Jesse rolls with the best. His skin is getting thicker.

I was extremely disappointed at the beginning of this book. "Stinnett is a 'one book wonder' that just won't give it up," I thought. "Book One was AMAZING, two not so much, and now three is a bust," my thoughts continued. Hoping I might be wrong, I continued reading and discovered several chapter in - I was wrong about Book 3. Yes, it started out slow, dull, and repetitive, BUT it didn't stay that way. The last half of the book almost made me forget how bad the first half had been! The author added another dimension to his protagonist when he expanded the plot into a new direction.

I read the first book, Fallen Out, and enjoyed it enough to get this one (3rd in the series) from the lending library. Glad I did not pay for it. I quickly discovered the material to be tediously redundant as many others have mentioned. Way too much filler regarding boat operations, Jesse's illegal weapons stash, his boat, his island, his pet peeves, and military bonhomme. Character development for the most part is shallow and perfunctory as is the plot development. This could have been an enjoyable series, but it's not for me. I am coming down off plane at this point in the channel.

The book reads like a high school senior just got all his boyhood wishes come true. Money, toys Constant flow of woman and lots of drama so life isn't boring! Love of his life not even dead 6 months and he's out banging what walks. Maybe if he didn't hide out in comas he could hold feelings past his winky. I read several books before commenting hoping Jessi would grow up so far he hasnt!

Having read the first and second books about Jesse McDermitt, I found this one had less action. I love Jesse and all his friends, and he does have a lot of people who love and respect him! He is a very tough retired marine who isn't afraid of anyone or anything. However, he has a very caring, loving and giving nature. He loves his friends and the people he works with and can't do enough for them.

I believe there are too many long descriptive pages about everything. I would truly love it more if there was more action in this book and less descriptions of the boats, the surroundings, and marine language. In spite of this, I love Jesse and will order the sequel books.

Well worth reading!!!!

Most book series become tedious after the second or third book but this has kept my attention from the very first book. My biggest pet peeve in book series is inconsistency, and there really isn't any in this one; the one or two I found were very minor and didn't cause any confusion. The only criticism I have of this third book is the medical inaccuracy. No one is going to wake up from a medically induced coma, be so weak that he can barely stand on his own, and be discharged home just a day or two later. And he most certainly would not have been up to going out for a steak dinner after not eating anything at all while in this coma.

Except for this, the Jesse McDermitt series has been a good read. I am just starting the fourth book and hope there is a fifth coming out!

I really like the series, have stayed up too late reading many nights, I'm actually reading Fallen Hero now, a letter book in the series. I don't like that he never attached to a woman permanently, we keep being led down that path but it never sticks. Also don't like how women in the stories are treated to much more sick violence. I may be naive, maybe the bad guys in the Keys are really that way. Seems the stories could be great without the perverted factor. I am not a libber or women's rights nut. Men get shot in the head, women get brutalized and ravaged. I'm not going to finish Fallen Hero. Won't write any spoilers but tired of women being disposable.

Book 1 was brilliant. Too the point, stayed on point and great ending. Book 2 was very good as well. Unfortunately book 3 is like reading a romance novel for giddy teenagers. What happened ? I literally skipped through chapters at a time only to find more of the same lovey dovey crap. 85% of this read has nothing to do with the plot.

Interesting read. Easy story line fueled by money. Brings in all the characters for a complete squad. Never ending parade of women and action to interest a male reader and enough romance and fluff . Some mystery and justice for those who want action adventure. Cool read.

This is a great series...and I suggest you capture all 8 books. I can't just rate this one (mostly 'cause I can't recall where it is in the continuem of the 7 I've read). So I suggest you find some beach time and read em all. You'll want to spend real time in the old Conch Republic...or find a spot in the new Keys...and fantasize.'

Like the good and caring characters. Learning more about guns and rifles from these series. Wish I was living in those islands and diving with them. Jesse is helping to capture the drug and gun runner in Cuba. Didn't like the ending.

I am becoming addicted to this series. At first, I was out off by all the technical information about boats and guns. However after moving past that, I have found Mr. Stinnett to be a very good story teller and writer. I enjoy his characters and plots. I look forward to reading other books in the series.

Okay so one thing is starting to be very clear for the protagonist- you shouldn’t be his girlfriend/wife etc. just really hurts your chances for retirement! That said this was another action packed fast paced read!

At some near point I will stop enjoying these reads and give up on Jesse and company.
All the smoking hot women throwing themselves at the forty-something ex-sniper/Gunnery Sergeant who keeps inheriting millions and falling for a new dream girl each story it seems.
Editing/proofreading need improvement.
Fun reading, but not very realistic. I'm still in for now.

This author is a great writer who manages to write accurately about the technical aspects of weaponry, boats and diving while weaving it all into a white knuckle roller coaster ride of a story, could not put this one down ! ! ! ! !

I chose to read this book after reading Fallen Palm by the same author. This did not disappoint. A really enjoyable read. From the off, I was gripped and could not put it down. The action moved along at a good pace, and I enjoyed the exotic scenery which was well-drawn. I was surprised at the outcome as the story kept me guessing all the way. I am looking forward to Mr. Stinnett's next book.

This is a very adventure book with a variety of action situations. The Florida Keys location is great for the story but the raid into Cuba is too unrealistic. There are so many characters that it is difficult to sort them out.

Did not anticipate the ending. I was concerned that Jesse jumped into a new relationship too soon after his wife was murdered. However Special Force members must be able to compartmentalize death better than the rest of us.

I have read the first three books in the jesse McDermott. They are great reads about a retired marine, and his new life as a captain of a fishing charter boat, but with a great twist - he is also part of a special ops team of military guys. Fallen Hunter was great, as it was full of action, drama, and excitement. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

I am hooked on this series. I love the Florida Keys, boats, and scuba diving, so it checks a lot of boxes for me. The books are well written and the author's skills 'grow' with each book. The characters are interesting and multi-dimensional. The plots are engrossing. Good fun for light reading.

This is another great novel by an up and coming writer! A little like a combination John McDonald and James W. Hall, with lots of movement and character interaction, and a solid plot, all interwoven into a Florida Keys environment this writer intuitively knows.
I look forward to the next Jesse McDermitt adventure.

This is the 2nd book in this series, and the 2nd time the author is killing off beautiful women. I hate books where characters are fully developed only to kill them. I love the rest of the book, great story, enough action, and a realistic love story.

I'm reading the next book but one more death of a female lead character and I'm through with this author.

Read Fallen Palm several weeks ago and really enjoyed it although I felt a little sad at the end. But enjoyed the book so much I wanted to read more, so downloaded Fallen Hunter. If anything I enjoyed it even more. In fact I couldn't put it down until I'd read every last word. I found it informative - learned a lot more about Florida Keys, fishing/shrimping and boats in general but most of all I loved the characters who were brought to life within the story creating excitement and anticipation as the story moved along at a fast pace.Loved it and particularly loved Pescador the dog. Ready now to read Fallen Pride Mr Stinnett's follow on book which I am sure will not disappoint..

Normally I did give anything 5 stars. I reserve that rating for truly outstanding items. This book (and the series) I would give 4.5 stars if available. The reason for the 5 stars is that I must like this book and the series since I have read 4 of these books one after the other - Fallen Hunter, Fallen Pride, Fallen Mangrove and Fallen King (in the middle of this one).

This was an enjoyable and exciting story. The characters are well described and not too many weaknesses to be liked, as is sometimes the case these days. I read the first of the Jesse McDermitt stories and so was really looking forward to this one. This second story follows the plot maneuvering of the previous novel so closely that Fallen Hunter became quite predictable, disappointingly so. However, I will look forward to the next story by Mr. Stinnett.

Retired elite Marine sniper, Jesse is now a Charter boat captain who takes on missions for Homeland Security. On his own island, he and a colorful bunch of friends make up a formidable team of terrorist terminators. Get a feel for the laid back island vibe, juxtaposed with the danger lurking behind the next adventure.

If you like non stop action with a sprinkling of love and even a little humor thrown in, then you will see why I gave this review a full 5 stars. The characters seem to live and breathe with you on each page. As the excitement builds you will become a part of it, not wanting to put the book down. A great series, one of the best I've read.

I didn't like Killing off Alex in Fallen Palm, and dumping Tina in Fallen Hunter. I hope the 6th book is being pursued.

I received a copy of Fallen Hunter and read it in two days. I just couldn't put the book down, it's captivating to find out how Jesse is going handle all of the situations he encounters. He certainly has bad luck with the ladies and that's why I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 3rd book in the series. Wayne has become a very accomplished writer in a short period of time. Both of his books have been extremely superb reading. I almost find myself seeing the island he owns with the house and the boats and the diving experiences.

Not sure I like the Jesse whose personality seems to be changing from the guy who liked his privacy to one who has bunches of people on his private spot in the world and who seems to be in the clutches of a made up agency and his libido. I will try another, maybe I am being too critical.

Mr. Stinnett has done it again. His adventures with Jesse keep you reading even when you know you should be trying to get some sleep. I couldn't put this book down until I was done reading it. You feel like you've been to the Florida Keys and just got back home when you finish this book. This book will be perfect for anyone who likes to read Clive Cussler or Tom Clancy. Great work Mr. Stinnett and keep it up.
