I highly recommend this book (and lifestyle) to anyone. The main idea: Eat highly nutritious food at every meal. I will admit I already had a fairly health diet, so many of the concepts were not foreign to me. What impressed me the most about Dr. Fuhrman's ideas is that this information is not fad-like. It's simple and makes more sense than any nutritional information I have ever read.
I have lost 11 pounds since I changed my diet. The following health issues completely or nearly completely resolved within the first month: endometriosis symptoms, acne, reflux (when I actually keep off coffee), and insomnia. I intend to eat like this for the rest of my life and I can honestly say (coming from someone who lives in the Deep South), it's not been difficult. I'm not hungry at all.

This book contains life transforming info. Helpful to learn what healthy eating really looks like. I like the scientific references and explanations, yet it is very simple to read and understand for anyone.

A great summary of key dietary and life saving information. Do not believe your doctors when they tell you drugs are the only way to help you, CHANGE WHAT YOU EAT! Eat the most nutritious real food you can find and stop eating processed food. Read this book to help you along that path. You ARE what YOU eat.

It is very informative and adds to the knowledge I already have about healthy eating habits. In addition, I have other friends who have also been impressed by the information and that led me to purchase the book as well. Dr. Fuhrman is known for his expertise in this area and has written several good books.

Recommended by a friend, I decided I had little to lose by reading what Dr Fuhrman had to say. IT ALL MAKES PERFECT SENSE! So I'm off to change my diet and hopefully my health. If nothing else, the recipes are worth trying. But I suspect there will be much greater benefits, that's why I read the entire book before jumping in to try what it's about.
I'll repost after a month.

Dr. Fuhrman advocates a plant-based, nutrient rich diet to enhance your overall health, along with enough exercise to keep your metabolism humming. While I am not a strict nutritarian (Dr. Furhman's designation for his lifestyle), I do follow a lot of guidelines. This is another good book for a nutrition library. Lots of good advice, and lots of good information.

Superb book. I originally reserved this book at our local library and enjoyed it so much that I purchased my own copy so that I could highlight various sections and refer back to it. Just think of how much money people and our government could save on health care costs by following Joel Fuhrman's plan for super immunity! I work in the health and fitness industry and have recommended this book to several people.

I like the extensive bibliography, that lists the studies which are the basis for the various recommendations and discussions. I also applaud Dr. Fuhrman for noting when then studies are not conclusive. And in addition to the very convincing arguments of reducing/eliminating animal protein he also provides some very tasty vegetarian recipes - with some non-vegetarian alternatives.
All in all a very readable book that looks at nutrition in a very balanced way and ponders the choices, e.g organic vs non-organic, benefits vs drawbacks of certain fish, etc...

Dr. Fuhrman outlines a new roadmap to a healthier lifestyle. The world is long overdue to looking at the natural means of healing. We think the answer is to take a pill. This is a myopic view of life and path to health. Readers will be rewarded to learn a new way to think and experience health. I know first hand as I've shed 60 pounds on his plan, and all because I read and adopted this new lifestyle. All from reading this book and 2 others written by Dr. Fuhrman.

If you are planning to follow Dr. Fuhrman's eating lifestyle, this is the easiest book to work from. I own the other two diet books and follow the plan, and this is the book I return to for explanations.
The food recipes are good, though I prefer to use the guidelines given in this book to adapt my own to our more Greek tastes. One of the wonderful things about Dr. Fuhrman's recommendations is the simplicity. If you can make salad, salad dressing, soup, and steam vegetables, you have all the skills you need. The salad dressing recipes were the most useful since he recommends avoiding all the prepared versions and we'd never done that. You don't need to follow the menus at the end of the book, you just need to follow the very simple guidelines. Chances are, you will reduce the amount of cooking you do now. Greek vegetable and soup recipes are very easily adapted to this lifestyle - just pretend that it's Lent.
I can't address the complaints one reader had about the cookie recipes as I only eat fresh fruit for dessert. I can imagine that these are the most far-fetched recipes in the book and the worst representatives. I don't think anyone whose priority in a diet cookbook is cookies and cakes has read the rest of the book, though, or terribly interested in adopting this diet.

This is an excellent innovative change from the horrible government food pyramid! Eating this way does feel better & the recipes are truly delicious. I have not completely made this my diet but I've incorporated many of the recipes & ideals. Excellent.

This book was written by Dr. Fuhrman. What more is there to say. Excellent and well worth it! Dr. Fuhrman is excellent and very well documented. He seldom if ever gives opinion but rather show you the actual study where something is shown to be true. Thanks!!!

As a research scientist I am quite impressed with the thoroughness of Dr. Fuhrman's references to scientific studies to document the statements he makes and the information he provides. I would like for all the M.D. internists and gastroenterologists as well as the DOs and Family Practitioners to read both "Eat to Live" and "Super Immunity". Perhaps these health providers would then be able to tell us what we should be eating rather than a list of foods we should not consume. From my perspective everyone, including children especially, would benefit from learning to eat nutritionally for a more healthy lifestyle.

fuhrmans first few chapters are too scientific for the average reader to appreciate but once he gets into the heart of the program for which
the reader bought the book in the first place it becomes a read that will transform most anyone into a more profound plant
based diet. The realization of the garbage one has put into their system is enough to make you realize that it's time
to put your health at a first priority .
Good menus to help you in this most important transformation to good health.

For sure, this book is extremely life changing if we apply info to our every day eating habits. It surely is influencing mine today and I'll be living a much longer healthier existence. Just very very detailed in the explanations, so need to hunker down to read. Very time consuming to read, but totally worth it!!

This book and "Eat To Live" are the precursors to "Eat For Health" . I found all three very similar in content but would still recommend them all including his "Nutritarian Handbook, ANDI Scoring Guide" and "Healthy Cooking" DVD bundle.

The headline shouted from the newspaper that our grandchildren were going to have shorter lives than us. Why? How can that be? And I searched for the answer and found that we were eating 200% more animal meat than our grand parents and 200% more dairy than our parents did. So what am I to do to back away from the cliff of cancer, heart disease, diabetics, arthritis, and mental illness?
Dr. Fuhrman takes the men and women who are looking at death's door and provides the instructions on how you turn your health around and get so healthy you do not fear a cough or a sneeze because you are that healthy.

I've read dozens of books, mostly by physicians, on what to eat. Dr. Fuhrman's books are sensible and specific, recommending not only what to eat but also how much and how to prepare. His prescription even describes how much and what kinds of foods are best to eat if not following the recommendations and having a little cheat. While he is by no means alone in recommending a similar diet, plant based and avoiding refined, processed ingredients, his specific suggestions seem easiest to follow and most healthy.
As a physician myself, I've found Dr. Fuhrman's eating style to be closest to the one I've come to follow after years of experimenting. I've tried the range from Atkins style to the 10% fat vegan style eating. I feel best with more fat, mostly from raw or dry roasted nuts and seeds, avocado, and some olives. And I feel best when I get a small portion of daily calories (10-15% of daily total) from animal products, mostly non-fat yogurt but also limited fowl and fish. I lost weight on Atkins but after two years of following, I was short of breath with exertion and finding my exercise tolerance decreased. This is no longer an issue since stopping Atkins.
Super Immunity has a number of delicious recipes, though more sweets (fruit based) than I eat, I suppose to help those who could not follow such a diet without sweets. I mostly eat my fruit plain or mix it in a fruit salad, or salad mixed with cucumber and celery.
Over many years, I've gradually transitioned to simpler, more whole food meals, fewer ingredients and less processed (I strive to use whole, minimally processed foods and to prudently use grinding, blending, pressing, and prolonged cooking with high heat.) These foods are delicious and and have helped me to lose weight and feel better even as I am becoming a senior citizen.
I've also found this has decreased inflammation in my body (previously had arthritis symptoms as young as 35, which has since resolved and mild rosacia, also resolved. I rarely get sick with any kind of illness and have minimal need for medication. So I suspect Dr. Fuhrman's claims regarding super immunity stand to be substantiated.
I would caution that some physicians claim one can prevent chronic disease with the right eating plan. I think it better to say you can decrease the likelihood or extend the time before developing disease. In my experience, many people will live about the same life span regardless of lifestyle. The difference is how they will live, debilitated on multiple medications for the last 20-30 years of life, or healthy and active with minimal health problems.

Readers of Dr. Joel Fuhrman's “Super Immunity” will find that it repeats much of the message of his other books, but it does extend in depth the implications of his research to the area of the immune system. He deserves credit for repeating tirelessly the themes of micronutrients, empty calories, cruciferous vegetables, etc. (and I always underline these once again in my copies also).
For new readers of Dr. Furhman , this book will be a stunning eye-opener, full of appalling new information about the misuse of vaccines and antibiotics. Such medications can degrade the body's ability to protect itself. He describes the sad paradox of how symptom reducers such as decongestants can extend the illness by fighting the body's natural ability to combat illness. He also cites unintended consequences: chemicals used to remove caffeine from coffee may be hazardous.
As always, he has plenty of striking lines, such as “...a piece of chicken is like a cookie; they are both foods without a significant antioxidant or phytochemical load.” (chapter 1)
In Dr. Furhman's books, you know he is a medical expert by the authentic terminology he shares with the reader: “endothelial cells”, “apoptosis”, “angiogenesis”, “anti-aromatase activity”, “anorexia of infection”, etc.
This book has a sweeping range, from “The failure of Modern Medicine” to mundane advice such as “chew cruciferous greens well and undercook when steaming so not too mushy.”
As always, the book includes handy page-size summary charts of best and worst foods, etc.
Somewhat surprisingly, he writes in chapter five “In general try to eat not more than one or two foods a day that are not health-supporting. (!)
My only other critical remark is perhaps less use of “super”, e.g. super immunity, super foods... nowadays if the the media is to be believed, it seems every food is a super food and the term has become a cliche'.
