This is a delightful book filled with lots of "action" words (bam, whop, dig, smush, etc) and a jaunty narrative. I love that it takes the reader from the very first stage of building a road (marking the road on a map) to the very last (opening day) and the author even thought to add planting around the highway before it opens. The illustrations are vibrant and cute. Both my 2 (boy) and 5 (girl) year olds love this story and it's one I don't mind reading over and over again!

Wonderful! The rhymes are great, the poetry is so much fun to read, the pictures are really cute, the mixed gender construction crew is a relief from all the all-male kids books out there. I find myself reciting the poetry periodically throughout the day.

The illustrations are the best part of the book. My child loves it. I'd buy it again.
My over-hyper critique is this: The book creators seem to be mixing their messages though, i.e. the author has the construction workers eating fresh fruit along with their sandwiches for lunch, but the illustrator has them cutting through a rolling, farm land to put in a super highway.

As far as picture books for kids about construction go, this one is great. I enjoyed everything about it. My kid did too.
First and foremost it's an accurate portrayal of all the steps involved with making a road from the clearing of the land to the painting of the lines on the road. (I'm sure it leaves a few details out, but I'm not a civil engineer. It certainly hits the major points.) So you're telling a story to a toddler that's factually accurate. That's always fun.
The words are written in a way that is fun to read. There is a rhythm to the text when read aloud. That's always a plus with a bedtime story. And each page ends with 3 sounds. ("Whish...Zoom...Crack..." That sort of thing) So ti's just fun to read and fun for a kid to listen to.
The illustrations are well done and fun. For a kid who loved trucks and tractors it's extra cool.
If you have a kid who likes trucks and stuff, this is a winner.
All in all this is a great little board book.

This rhyming, rhythmic read-aloud lays out every step of the construction process with simple language and vibrant art. I can't imagine a more perfect book for my machine-loving two-year-old. We also love the final page of the book, which details the much-loved construction equipment (and clues parents in to the real names of the machines). We check "Roadwork" out from the library every other visit, which probably means it's time to actually purchase the book!
"Construction" and "Demoltion" are two others by Sally Sutton that are equally adored at our house. Give them a try, too!

A friend purchased this book for my twin boys because my dad owns a road construction company. This book is ADORABLE! Great rhythm to the words as you read it. The pictures are colorful and interesting to look at... and My Dad approves - the book does a pretty good job of telling the story of what actually goes into building a road! My boys love this book and I've read it some many times I know the words almost by heart. If you have boys (are girls that are interested in roadwork) - I highly recommend this book!

Very disappointed. Book cover is upside down and backwards. Very difficult for a young child that is learning how to read to do it properly when he opens the cook he is looking at the last page upside down. Hopefully we can still return. This book should have never left the warehouse or the store to be purchased. However, if you overlook the major defect in manufacturing, the content is good for my toddler son that loves tractors, trucks etc.

BEAUTIFUL artwork! The story is also neat in that it follows all the steps of constructing a road, including painting the lines and putting up signs and even taking a lunch break. My kids love it. But mostly I love the artwork.
