Though I normally prefer science fiction and fantasy books, I enjoyed Ruby Holler. It is somewhat similar to Holes by Louis Sachar in being a funny story with a few twists in which the good guys have previously suffered but eventually win. The book, which has a slight adventure story flavor, although it really isn't one, is about twins Dallas and Florida, orphans who have spent their entire lives in the care of mean, sometimes crazy, adults. When sent to Ruby Holler, a beautiful place in which there are only two houses, they are at first skeptical of the seemingly kind nature of the people with whom they are living, but then realize that these grown-ups are not so bad after all. I'm not sure how to describe this book, but it's definitely good, and I would recommend it to other kids.

Dallas and Florida have been together since they were found on the steps of Mr. and Ms. Trepids orphanage. The girl, Florida is a rebel she will not do any thing the Trepids say. The boy Dallas is a quite and peaceful who also likes nature. One day a couple named Tiller and Sairy go to the Trepids orphanage, and see Dallas and Florida they decide that they want to adopt them. So the next day the twins go home with Tilller and Sairy. When they get there the twins are amazed, the warm little house in the country is so different from the cold orphanage they are used to.
I really liked this book because I have read all the other books by this author and really liked them so it was no surprised after I read it that this was a very good book. I also liked it because the way the author uses detail in explaining the characters, and by the end of the book you feel like you really know. I would really recommend this book to people who are fans of Sharon Creech.

Picture the worst environment you've ever known -- where you felt no love or concern for your well being. Now picture what might seem like paradise -- a place where you can run and scream and grow up while making the mistakes that all kids do. You'd wake up to the smell of bacon and hear the kindly voices of the two old folks who took you both in for the summer. You'd set your hands to learning how to whittle and understand what camping outside is really like. This place you'd be imagining is Ruby Holler, and it seems pretty nice. However, can you (Dallas and your twin sister Florida) trust it? Your plan, should things go downhill as they always do, is to catch the night train. How long will things seem to go well before you two need to abandon this place? Or is there anything happening in this sleepy old place that makes you think you're needed here after all?

I read "Ruby Holler" in my fourth grade classroom. I really liked the book because Florida and Dallas's personalities remind me of mine. I'm always drifting off thinking about faraway places. Florida reminds me of myself because she's always adventurous and taking chances. I really like the part when Florida and Tiller were on the river and the boat tipped over because of the waves. That was an exciting part. I don't like the Trepids because they want to take Sairy and Tiller's understone funds. It was funny when Mr. Trepid thought the gems that Z hid were real. Those Trepids are so selfish. The book was really exciting and adventurous. I'm looking forward to reading books by Sharon Creech. I would read it all over again!

This is a great book by Newbery Medal winning author Sharon Creech.
The story is about 13-year-old twins Dallas and Florida who live at the Boxton Creek Home Orphanage, run by the awful Trepids. They have lived at many foster homes but always brought back to the orphanage. "Nothing but trouble," the adoptive parents say. "Nothing but trouble." That's how they became "the trouble twins".
Tiller and Sairy are a 60-year-old couple whose kids are long gone. They want to go on an adventure while their bodies are still strong enough to climb a mountain, etc. Tiller and Sairy find Dallas and Florida at the Boxton Creek Home and take them on adventures.
Sharon Creech's latest book is bound to enchant lovers of "Bloomability", "Absolutely Normal Chaos", "Chasing Redbird", and "Love That Dog", some of her other novels. Be sure to read this.It is definitely Newbery material. I strongly recommend it.

This book was written by Sharon Creech. This book is about two abandoned children Dallas and Florida trying to find a home that will accept them. When Dallas and Florida were born their mother left them on the door step of Mr. And Mrs. Trepid who unfortunately owns an orphanage. Dallas and Florida have lived there for a long time and they keep getting adopted but by the end of the week are sent back for misbehavior. Now they are told that they want to be adopted by an old couple named Tiller and Sairy. They arrive and they don't know what adventures they will have at Ruby Holler. This book is a very good book. I would really recommend this book to anybody who likes adventures.

"Ruby Holler" is an interesting book about two kids, "Trouble Twins", Dallas and Florida. Dallas and Florida got their name when their mother abandoned them outside an orphanage. Dallas and Florida were found in a box and in the box were traveling brochures that were Dallas, Texas and Miami, Florida. Dallas and Florida were adopted many of times but were sent back because they made too much trouble. Later, older couples adopted them named Tiller and Sairy. Ruby Holler is where Sairy and Tilller live. The kids and their new parents went on a trip. They got close with each other. Later, Mr. Trepid figures out that Sairy and Tiller have valuables hidden in Ruby Holler. Mr. Trepid goes to Sairy and Tillers neighbor, Z, to tell him to go into Ruby Holler while the family was gone. Mr. Trepid wanted Z to make a map of the rocks and the underground. He finds Sairy and Tillers valuables and Dallas and Florida's too. Meanwhile, the family went to a farmer's house after found Florida at the trip. They used the phone to call Z. Z picks up the phone and drives them back to Ruby Holler. He tells them about Mr. Trepid. The family plans to play a prank on Mr. Trepid and put fake jewels under the rocks. Later on, Sairy and Tiller's real grown children come back. Florida and Dallas do on the Night Train and get lost in Ruby Holler at night. They decide to stay there.
I liked this book because Sairy and Tiller go on adventures with Dallas and Florida to keep them company. " How long have we been slapping these paddles in the water?" Florida asked. "About gazillion hours?" Florida said this because they have been on the trip for along time together and paddling for four hours.
I also liked this book because it was interesting. The way Sharon Creech described the Holler at night was very scary. "Ruby Holler at night can be an eerie, dark place, full of shadows and silence, but both the shadows of silence are deceptive."
My favorite part of this book was the ending (...)

This is an extremly awesome book. It starts out with 2 twins called Dallas and Florida AKA trouble twins. They live at a orphanage. The two people who run the orphanage are Mr. And mrs. Trepid. They are crabby and mean 24/7. They shouldn't run a orphanage. These old folks are interested in adopting them so they let the kids stay at there house to see if Dallas and Florida like them. The reason they call it ruby holler is that in the fall when the leaves fall they look like rubies. Dallas and Florida are thinking about running away from Tiller and Sairy's house. Will Dallas and Florida run away or will they stay with Tiller and Sairy? Read this book and find out!

Ruby Holler is a great book by Sharon Creech. It's an adventure story about two twins named Florida and Dallas along with two elderly people named Sairy and Tiller. Though they're old both Sairy and Tiller have a lot of adventure left in them. At first Dallas and Florida are orphans until Sairy and Tiller "adopt them." What Tiller and Sairy needed the two twins for were two different trips to two different places. Tiller wants to take Florida paddling down the Rutabago River and Sairy wants to take Dallas to the small island of Kangadoon. This book has become one of my favorite books with all of its twists and turns. It's a great book in my opinion.

Ruby Holler is a book about two foster twins. They have hard lives going to different homes until they meet the perfect family, Tiller and Sairy. One foster family found out about the understone funds that Tiller and Sairy have and they try to take the money from them. My friend and I read this book together and we loved it. This book is fiction and awesome. Thank you Sharon Creech for making this book. I highly recommend this book.

Ruby Holler is a very touching book. Every kid in the USA should read this book. It is about twins over coming challenges. They have Benn to so many foster homes finely they find one then they find there real dad.
The theme of ruby holler is friend ship. Because the twins only relay on each other .they only depend on each other. They only care about each other. They would never dream about losing each other.
The characters in ruby holler are intristing because most books don't have twins. You can see them in your head they have there Owen personality.
The setting of ruby holler is very interesting because most books aren't in a holler most books are in a farm or city or in a mystical land but not in a holler you can see it in your mind it would be cool to live there
Over all I recommend ruby holler to very 5th greater it teaches you not to give up even know it seems hopples it is a very good book

Dallas and Florida are twins that live in an orphanage known as the Boxton Creek Home. The Boxton Creek Home is owned by a ruthful married couple named the Trepid's. The Trepid's are rule freaks and have kitchen rules, bathroom rules, stairway rules, basement and outside rules, upstairs and downstairs rules, clothing rules, washing rules, and so on. Florida and Dallas have been in the orphanage for 13 years and have broken every rule at least twice. In the 13 years that Dallas and Florida have been in the orphanage they haven't been able to complete their plan to catch the night train and run away
The Trepid's have tried over and over again to get rid of Dallas and Florida for years as well. They have sent them to many different families, but there is always a different story of why they were sent back. Then they are sent to a couple who had been married for many years and their children had grown and moved out of the house. The plan is for Dallas and Florida to spend time with Tiller and Sairy and to each go on trips separately with them. There is another reason the Trepid's reason sent them with this new family as well for the reader to find out.
Dallas and Tiller have no idea why this new family wants to take them home with them. Their thoughts are that like most families before, they will just send them back to the orphanage. Tiller and Sairy are unsure about taking the twins home as well. Both Dallas and Florida and Tiller and Sairy learn a lot about each other and themselves while living together and going through their adventures. This is an enjoyable book about two young orphans finding out what having a family is like and two foster parents who learn to help people in need and that life isn't over when your children grow up.

Orphaned twins Florida and Dallas are known as troublemakers and stuck in a children's home controlled by monster-like adults. After years of waiting, Sairy and Tiller, a wonderfully kind couple older couple, adopt them. Florida and Dallas think of running away, but...
Need I say more? This book isn't really bad, it's just a little too cutesy and way too predictable. I think a book should take you on journey, make you think, and leave you wondering about some things. From the moment I picked up on all the details of this book's setting, I knew pretty much exactly what was going to happen. Basically, "Ruby Holler" follows the good ol' "happily ever after" formula a little too closely.
The best things about Sharon Creech's most recent offering are the characters. Florida's constant expression of "putrid" will always coax a smile from you, and Dallas has some good moments, too. Sairy and Tiller bring a measure of "grandparently" comfort to the story, and their (especially Sairy's) musings about life and enlightening stories about her experiences are glimmers of Creech at her best. "Ruby Holler" would no doubt be enjoyed by a middle- to upper-elementary audience, but it certainly isn't the author's best work.

This book is a bit dissapointing. Sharon doesn't work her magic into it as much as her other books. The book just flows through, with only a bit of exciting moments. I recomend this to Creech Fans...but it may be appeeling to the younger audience. I am thirteen, and I didn't find it that interesting. I am a person who re-reads books alot, but I dont think I'll be doing that here.

Ruby Holler is an awesome book! When you first pick this book up and look at the number of chapters, you get a disgusted look on your face. As you go along, you find the chapters aren't so bad after all.
One thing that I like is that the author, Sharon Creech, really describes the characters in detailed length here are more than enough details to paint a picture.
Sharon Creech comes up with a creative thing that a couple of the characters do. You wouldn't normally think of someone doing something like the characters do.
Another thing is that the characters are all related somehow. One, not really a main character, deals with most of the minor and major characters. In turn, the other minor characters are linked in some way to the main characters. It's fascinating in the way you have to piece together everything.
This book gives you a different angle on someone's life as an orphan. It gives you an inside look at how things really go for a pair of "trouble twins" and how an elderly couple can change them completely. At first, the twins are afraid that living with the couple will be just like living in every other house they have been to. When the twins discover the fact that Tiller and Sairy are different, they change their ways and come to like living with Tiller and Sairy.
In the book it describes a different upbringing of the "trouble twins" than what someone might be used to. When Tiller and Sairy cook for the twins with the twins, they are told that they don't have to cook just for the twins. There are a lot of things that the twins haven't done or seen that they experience while at Tiller and Sairy's house.
One other good part to this book is a secret or two that have been kept. I'll let you discover those for yourself. Enjoy the reading!!!

Ruby Holler is about two kids named Dallas and Florida. Dallas and Florida are orphans and live with the Trepids. The Trepids are mean people and they put you in the cellar if you break a rule. One day Tiller and Sairy come to adopt them but they don't want to go to another home. The reason the two old folks wanted to get two kids is so they could go on their trips to the Kangadoon and the Reautabago River, but they were going seperate so they would take each one on their trips with them so they could have company.

Dallas and Florida have been dubbed the "trouble twins." They have been transferred around families and orphanages all their lives. Tiller and Sairy are two old couples whose children had grown up and long gone, and they're looking forward a big adventure. When Tiller and Sairy invited Dallas and Florida to stay with them and keep them company on their adventure, the holler magic takes over it, and Dallas and Florida start to think that maybe they are not too bad.
Like all of other Sharon Creech's books, Ruby Holler is also another of her interesting and amazing book. The setting of this book is mostly in Ruby Holler. Even the most exciting scene is in Ruby Holler when the antagonist of the whole book, Mr. Trepid, tries to steal the wealth of Sairy and Tiller. Ruby Holler is also the place with most conflicts happened on Dallas and Florida, Tiller and Sairy. Dallas and Florida are having internal conflicts in their self. They are planning to catch the night train and run away, but they are feeling bitter while is suppose to be happy. Tiller and Sairy are always having conflict, they are mostly arguing about Florida and Dallas. Sharon Creech uses foreshadow very well in every of her book. Even in Ruby Holler. Beneath every word hidden a hint of what will happen next, and effect of foreshadow is making the book more exciting.
The reason I choose this book to read it is because I heard that Sharon Creech is a good author and her books are really good, and everyone likes it. The cover attracted me first, the picture makes me feel warm and happy, and soon as I saw the cover I can determine that will be a lovely story. After I read the inside cover of the book, I think it will be a fun book to read and I will enjoy this book.
The best part I like about the book is that this book has Sharon Creech's style in it. Her own special way of writing style makes the book not like the others I have seen. Her hilarious but also bitter makes a warm and lovely story. I like this part the most when Tiller and Sairy are talking, it has her writing style in it. "' Tiller?' Sairy said,' you asleep yet?' `I was asleep until you woke me up,' Tiller said. `But you're awake now?' `Do I have a choice in this matter?' `Of course you have choice,' Sairy said, `I'm not going to force you to stay awake.' Tiller yawned. `Did you want something?' `Remember Dallas and Florida...'"(p.122) it contains her hilarious writing style and it makes me laugh too. Its funny but not too silly that's the part I really like.
Compare to another Sharon Creech's book, Walk Two Moon, Ruby Holler is quieter, it's surprising but not shocking, it gently and peacefully surprises you. Walk Two Moon is more like an adventure book. It also appears many foreshadows in Walk Two Moons.
I think about 10 to 12 years old readers will like this book. This book is kind of childish and funny, it suit the younger people than eighth graders.

Ruby Holler was a CILIP Carnegie Medal Winner in 2002. It is a realistic fiction novel about two twin orphans, Dallas and Florida Carter who live at the Boxton Creek Home. In the beginning of the novel, the story discusses about the foster homes that Dallas and Florida lived in, and about the twins living at Sairy and Tiller's cabin in Ruby Holler. This is an amazing story of the conditions in which Dallas and Florida live in such as living in cobwebbed cellars, snake-pits, having to dig wells, and the horrible abusive situations they endured in the Boxton Creek Home. Then a couple who are both sixty years old, Sairy and Tiller come to Boxton Creek Home looking for two young people to take along on separate journey's, one to Kangdoon bird hunting (Sairy and Dallas) and the other to Rutabago River (Tiller and Florida). However, they take a journey of finding out that there are actually wonderful foster parents in the world. Dallas and Florida save Tiller and themselves by rescuing Tiller from under a boat because of Dallas and Sairy showing up to take Tiller to the hospital along with Mr.Z. In the end, Dallas and Florida find happiness, meaning, worth, and love and stay with Sairy and Tiller in Ruby Holler. When they awake to the smell of bacon from where Sairy and Tiller are cooking from following Dallas and Florida from another un-successful runaway attempt to catch the midnight train. At first when I read this book I felt sad and angry at the beginning because Dallas and Florida were treated so badly at the Boxton Creek Home and by the Hopper's, the Drepp's, and the other hideous foster parents they had throughout the novel. But, when Sairy and Tiller got them I was so happy and excited. I loved this book, especially the happy ending! This story also explains orphanages, foster homes, and abuse that children might have to go through and how one good experience can help remove bad things and make them better at least physically. Sharon Creech is a wonderful author that writes about events that could happen in real life situations and how to overcome them. I would recommend Ruby Holler and any of Sharon Creech's books to anyone!

Ruby Holler is a very adventurous book by Sharon Creech and is about two orphins, Dallas and Florida, brother and sister and their lives at Ruby Holler. I heard about this book from freinds, but what really made me read it is how much Dallas and Florida care for each other like at the Boxton Creek home for Orphins were Dallas was really sick with a fever, Floria was there day and night. So if you're a young reader and like sad, yet funny, books I recommend Ruby Holler for you.

Written by Sharon Creech, Ruby Holler is a story about two orphan twins named Dallas and Florida, also known as the trouble twins in the Boxton Creek Home. Dallas and Florida do not believe that there is such a thing as a loving home. In Ruby Holler, there lives an elderly couple, Sairy and Tiller. They enjoy the beautiful sunset of the deep woods. Wishing they had two kids to enjoy the woods with them, they know where to go.
Mr. and Mrs. Trepid, owners of the Boxton Creek Home, would love to get rid of the trouble twins. "Down to the basement, two hours in the thinking corner" is something said regularly in the Boxton Creek Home. After being adopted by Sairy and Tiller, Dallas and Florida find there is such a thing as a good loving home. Can fairy tales like this come true? Ruby Holler is like a maze with twists and turns at every corner. Suddenly a twist does happen when Sairy's real kids come home from their jobs. They dislike the idea of having two orphans living in their home. The story of Ruby Holler gives and shows the meaning of a real family in new words. An amazing story of abandonment and trust, it can really teach you a lesson to love and appreciate your home. What wonderful adventures will the trouble twins be taken on?

This book was on a summer reading list for school, and because I had enjoyed some of Sharon Creech's other books, I gave it a try. I remember waiting a while for things to get moving, but about halfway through I started to become more interested. The plot became more involving, the characters more lifelike. And then it ended. It ended so abruptly, in fact, that I wondered if while they were putting the book together they didn't just run out of ink. This is very disappointing, and even if she did come out with a sequel to resolve some of the many things she left unfinished in this book, I don't believe I'd read it. Ms. Creech, I hate to say it, but you let me down. As far as the two stars go, it's more like 1 1/2. You can consider the extra a pity half-star for the colorful and visually pleasing cover.

I think that the Trepids are very meannnnn especialy when Mrs.Trepid was yelling at the baby. The part when Mr.Trepid smacked Florida made me mad. I just wanted to pretend that Mr.Trepid was in my room so I could smack him twice as hard as he smacked Florida. If I were Mr.or Mrs.Trepid I would be very nice to Dallas and Florida and to all the other kids.I hope in the next volume of Ruby Holler the Trepids learn a lesson.

This book is for kids that like adventure books. In this book you can't stop reading because it will be very good. Also in here two twins are touble makers that have a hard time fitting in. This book is made for kids that are or think that they are trouble makers. This book is a whole bunch of fun for those kids that have a hard time finding a good book. This book is also good for kids who are best friends. The twins in here never separate until they go on a trip, but other than that they will never ,ever separate. In addition if you think you have weird names? Think again because the kids (the main characters) have names such as Dallas and Florida! This book is also kind of sad because the kids got abused by their foster parents and parents who adopted them so they want to run away. They think everybody is mean after experiencing that. So they don't trust anybody. See this book also give people the idea of some orphanges. The orphanges can be good in some places, but in this book the orphange is a bad place. So in this book I think it is trying to say don't make people feel unwanted instead make them feel good and full of joy. Lastly,I think this is a good book and easy to read so check it out[!]

An outstanding book that author,Sharon Creech, wrote! Florida and Dallas have come to their new parents,Tiller and Sairy, after they've passed through all those other bad foster homes. Tiller and Sairy are really great, sweet, and loving parents that should recieve some sort of reward like THE BEST PARENTS CAKE!!! The trip was supposed to be a lot earlier but................. READ TO FIND OUT!!!!!

Ruby Holler is about twin orphans, Dallas and Florida. Dallas and Florida have lived in an orphanage all their lives and can't seem to keep a home, or even want to, until Sairy and Tiller come along. Sairy and Tiller are an elderly couple that lives on Ruby Holler and each need an accompaniment for their summer adventures. At first, Dallas and Florida are not very happy that they have to spend the whole summer with Tiller and Sairy, but eventually grow to really like staying at the Holler. Everyone spends the beginning of the summer getting ready for their big trips. Dallas will be off with Sairy hiking, and Florida and Tiller will be going on a river rafting trip. But, everything runs haywire when everyone decides to take a "practice" vacation to get ready for the big trip. Dallas and Florida realize that the Holler is the best place they've ever stayed and end up not wanting to leave.
Sharon Creech is a great writer and is very detailed so you always know what everyone is thinking and doing. I recommend this book to everyone because it is a really good book. It's a book that has a lot of suspense, adventure, and is pretty funny throughout the story. Everyone should read this. Give a holler for Ruby Holler!

Ruby Holler is an excellent book. I liked it because there is suspense and funny points. It was fun to read about how troublesome the twins, Dallas and Florida, are and how different foster families managed them. I have read other novels by Sharon Creech and I personally think that this is one of her best books ever. I recommend this book to people who like adventure and a bit of mystery.

We read this in class, and I would recommend this to ANYBODY! Adults, or kids. Florida and Dallas are orphans, but even if you weren't adopted, anybody could relate to them. This is an example of fantastic, and another fine piece of art by Sharon Creech!

Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech
I think your book is very good and how you put details of the two kids who show dedication to getting out of the house because people never helped them. Mostly I think it deserves a 5 star because you make the kids smart and able to figure everything out. People should read this book if you like adventure and thrilling excitement. First I thought it was a bad book because I had never read it and had never thought it was good but then I read it and now I like it and think its one of the best books I had ever read. Some more good thing are when the kids disobey the parents and think the people who are real nice are bad but want to help them that's why you should read this book.

Very good book! I highly recommend this book to older children, maybe 12 and up. There are some details in the book that are too difficult for younger readers to handle in my opinion regarding death of a child and abuse. If you think your child is capable of handling these subjects they are ready for Ruby Holler. This is one of my favorite books for young readers. I also think that this book may be helpful to children who have been abused and are no longer in the situation to see that there is hope and love for the future.

Selected as the 2007 Maud Hart Lovelace winner, Ruby Holler demonstrates that young readers, in choosing this book, may lack the critical skills to see that it is manipulative in its tug at the heart strings while piling on the stock characters in what can be called nothing less than a formulaic plot.
Come on already. The caretakers of the children's home are just plain bad, through and through. Their antics go unnoticed by the governmental agencies that are supposed to oversee them? They have no redeeming qualities at all, just as every foster family is full of just plain mean people. (I'd hate to think what kind of message this sends to social service agencies trying to place kids in good homes.) And the old couple is just too good to be true--more black and white writing, I'm afraid.
The whole river/camping adventure (that I knew was never going to happen) was never explained: Why did they want to take separate trips? Why was such an elderly couple so inexperienced? Why did Z never fess up about being the father of Florida and Dallas? Why did the adult children trash talk the orpans? And why didn't we get to hear them do that? Why did the old couple take these kids to begin with? What about the loose ends with the Trepids and the children left there?
You could like this book as a light-hearted adventure, but since it covers serious issues, it really cannot be viewed through such a narro prism. Overall: One thumb up; one thumb down, way down. Creech is going to have to do better; I'm looking for something on par with Walk Two Moons.

I think this book is very interesting, especially
when it describes their dreams.
The Trepids are mean and I hate the Cranbeps and their horrid daughter.
It made me angry when their daughter spat on the twins
and pulled Florida`s hair. She deserved to have her dolls`hair pulled off!
