The book is kind of juvenile in the writing. Seasoned pilots "forgetting" they're about to make an emergency landing. Battles were pretty predictable. A general wondering if a captain could have done better than he did even though he had battles under his belt. Don't think I'll be moving on to another one.

Well I am usually pretty lenient when it comes to space science, but this book was too much. They can make cell phone calls from space and other communications instantly, but when they return to the solar system there sensors have time delays huh. Also there is no explanation of any of the science, good sci-fi has explanations even if they are impossible with present knowledge. Consistency is paramount in space sci fi, I believe this author has potential as a writer, but do the basics science development and try again. Develop any crazy thing you dream of then keep it consistent.

Given that these books were written in 2017, why does it read like something from before people knew anything about space at all? There are no shockwaves from an explosion in space since there's no medium for them to travel through. There could be an expanding debris field, but that's not going to toss fighters around like they're in water or air. If you have g-force acceleration, then you do not get to have blood drops floating around in the cockpit. That same force pushing the pilot into their seat is also pushing all the floating blood back too. Why are your pilots wearing suits if they're useless if injured? No reason other than the authors think like aviators and sailors and not astronauts. In space, there's no drag coefficient from atmosphere and so no reason to restrict the vehicles to what modern fighters look like. Nor would it be realistic that a ship launched from another ship in space, is so limited weapons almost exactly like modern jet fighters. 4 long and 4 short range missiles and 1000 rounds for the guns? Double that, triple that, it only affects the acceleration rate and when the weakest part of the fighter is the pilot, you can pack a ton of weapons and a little more engines to a box and it will handle just the same. They aren't anywhere near planets so the gravitational forces there are non-existent. Inertia is the only operable force and you don't need to bank around in turns, you can simply rotate the axis and accelerate in the new direction much faster than easing around a curve. It wouldn't be difficult for people trained in that manner of physics to pilot in space.
It seems points that were just made in the story are completely forgotten about a page later. The engines were destroyed and if the z-drive was charged, it would have blown the entire ship up when it ruptured. 3-4 pages later and "The z-drive will take 11 minutes to recharge!" which means long after this battle has ended with the destruction of the ship but half a page later "The z drive is charged so we can do an emergency venting of it" So, first there was no hope to get it charged because it was hopelessly damaged, then it can be charged but will take far to long to escape, then it's charged and they could escape, but instead opt to destroy the back half of the ship and move a little out of the way of an enemy weapon. There are just soooooo many stupid inconsistencies that I can't understand how these were overlooked.
When you jump into the the store unlimited market, you have the chance to succeed dramatically, or fail miserably and unless this series takes a more intelligent and thoughful path, this series will fade into obscurity fast.

I was honestly disappointed in this book. I was maybe expecting more because of all the other good reviews in it.
I am an avid Military Sci Fi reader and this was on the lower end of that spectrum for me. The biggest hang up on the story was the Characters. I thoroughly believe that Characters make up a lot of a story. And for this story I found it hard to like ANY of the POV characters. While you don't have to necessarily like a character to make that person a good character it does help. Worst off I didn't find any of the characters actually interesting which is even worse.

A good story line, but written very badly. The dialogues were badly forced with loads of pointless digressions, which must have been why the editors missed so many spelling errors. If it hadn't been free I would have asked for a refund. This is supposed to be a collaboration with an established author but there's no evidence for that

"A true warrior, like tea, shows his strength in hot water." Sleepy space Station 43 barely had time to register that they were under attack before they were totally obliterated. Not even time to send a distress signal.
Then it was the turn of Friendship Station, constructed to demonstrate the alliance between former enemies of the US - Sino world war of twenty years before. But memories run deep and Admiral, former Captain, Mattis doesn't trust these new 'friends'. Yet if anyone is to survive they must all work together...
This is a marvellous book, peopled with very real characters, well written and constructed, with tension building from the very first page. Who are these unknown attackers? Are they from a secret earth conspiracy, or are they truly alien? And what is the secret being concealed by the pompous Senator Pitt? A glorious little mystery wrapped up within the fierce battle for survival of the few ships able to make a stand against the powerful destroyers with their different technologies. How many must die in the possibly futile attempt to save humanity's home?
I received a prepublication copy of this book as a gift from the author for which i am really grateful. I am an enormous fan of science fiction books and read a lot, many of them excellent. But i rate this, The Last War, as one of the best of it's type that i have read. The first in a trilogy, i am now eagerly awaiting the next in the series. My thanks again to the author for the enjoyment this book has given to me. Highly recommended.

The beginning of the book shows a remarkably bad impression of ‘Top Gun’. This author obviously knows nothing about the military, yet attempts (poorly) to establish realistic military characters and procedures throughout the book. A little research would have revealed how juvenile and ridiculous some of the scenes seem to actual veterans. Little details like Admiral Mattis having led ground teams, and later commanding a vessel, ensure the veteran readers that their assumptions about this author’s complete misrepresentation of military structure is based off of a complete lack of knowledge regarding the subject. The fighter jockey freezing upon missile lock is also a laughable scene. Training (and the fact she’d actually seen combat already) makes this scene a bad joke. Also, her co-pilot would have been booted out of fighter training and reassigned due to his condition. Nothing in this book is realistic regarding the military. And that’s just the beginning of the book.

Wicked good read. The military chain of command part of it is not badly done for space opera, even though military discipline would never allow junior officers calling their admiral nuts in the middle of a battle and questioning his orders. That being said they manage to elicit the correct emotions in the reader. Loyalty and honor, friendship and self-doubt with the ability to present the confidant facade necessary in a combat commander they did well. I found myself emotionally involved with the characters, the hallmark of good writing. I just started to write my own hard military sci-fi book, and I am realizing how difficult that can be to pull off. Well done.

I read this book through Kindle Unlimited. The first in what looks to be a wonderful series, this offering has plenty of action (pretty much non-stop), likable characters and moves a good pace. The editing is well done for an Indie offering and the author has nice chops. If you're looking for hard or social science, strong character development or political intrigue, this book is not your cup of tea. If, however, you like predictable military (Fleet) action, this book does not disappoint. I will read the next book in the series.

Aliens attack Earth? Sounds familiar but with the added twist of a non-united Earth so busy arguing among themselves that Earth could be destroyed.
Have to say plenty of action from the start to the end and good action from space fighters up to the President. Lots of secrets being held by everyone with bits and pieces being released as the story progresses but still more secrets to come. Who is spectre? Where have the strange aliens come from? I did think the alien technology was a bit weak and should have been not so easy to break or discover but that is my thoughts
It is a good book that will keep you absorbed if you like Sci-fi Military action with a bit of Cold war back room bargaining and 'knives in the back' stuff.

This book has a very good opening and an interesting basis for a story. Sadly, the author does a poor job of writing the combat scenes. There is a noticeable lack of understanding about ship classes, how space combat could work, and inconsistencies throughout the fighting.
I wanted to like this story, but it just became frustrating to read in the end. The lack of character development also hindered this story from becoming immersive. This is more like an overly long short story rather than a real novel.
The author needs so spend some time reading David Weber and Honor Harrington to get am idea of what good space combat looks like.
Hopefully the next books in the series see some change and the good plot idea and background can take off.

There's some stuff that could work in this story, unfortunately it's buried under every bad cliched military dialogue ever. It takes away from the actual plot. I'm going to skip the next book because the language is so annoying.

If you like traditional space battle sci-fi, strong leading characters, old adversaries who become respected allies and the obligatory snake in the grass, then this is for you. If you lean towards sex and violence, then give it a miss... although there is SOME violence and a lingering affair from long ago that smolders.
This debut is well-written and well-edited and proofed. While not formulaic, it does follow the established pattern of the genre. By the end of this first book, the reader still doesn't know exactly who the enemy is other than they share some traits with us (no spoilers here!) and they are implacably singleminded in their attacks.
Go ahead, give it a shot!

I liked this book as entertainment. There are some nuanced Star Trek/Star Wars jokes without the entire book/series which are amusing. The author has a straightforward approach that reminds me a bit of Jack Campbell. It's not a stellar job, the cliche characters start getting a bit to simple and the plot was a tad light but it was worth the read as part of the KU program.

The prologue and the first chapter were just a bit tedious for me but my patience was rewarded. After the foundation was laid the action continued to build. I would given it four stars if not for the copious amount of profanity. Mr Boston dedicates his book to Admirals Kirk, Adam and Akbar... neither of which allow that kind of foul language on their bridge.

This was an easy read, flowed pretty well. Battles ok, few new ideas. This is where earth has not met any one outside our planet. First encounter was defeated. In the last chapter, is where the information is contained about the up coming story line. One, the aliens are coming back. Two, senator Pitts will continue his revengeful spirit. Three, there is a secret between China and USA. Plots and sub plots. Think the space genre is the background for this political mystery.

Just finished. Classic heroic novel. (Hero getting into a situation not of their making at the depths of dispaor hero reaches into them self and finds the will to prevail. ). Good character development. I liked the characters. Good battle descriptions. You will not be disappointed. There is life in us older military folks

As the first book in a planned series some events occur that are going to be important in future stories but the overall action in the book makes this a very good read. If you like space battle stories you should read this book. I plan to read the second book of the series when it becomes available. I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily writing this review.

Reeks of all the social justice warrior tropes. Story is not bad but the author had to force all of the liberal identity politics onto his unsuspecting readers. Reads more like a comic book than a serious attempt at telling a story. The various 'types' had a tale hung on them. Not worth finishing.

The level of writing here is very sophmorish. I'm trying to be nice. It's kinda like a comic book in words.
I'm not exactly sure what the point is. If it was a new stylish method? An attempt to write an adventure for kids?
This book series should be labeled with some kind of warning to adults.

Good start to series. Characters are a little predictable. The grizzled old admiral from the last war, the sometimes bitter XO, a really smart guy with no emotions etc. also don't look for rock solid science, if you go into this book thinking how a sci-fi TV series would be (space battles where you can reach out and touch each other rather than the vast distances your would expect) you will most likely enjoy it. Give it a try!

Talk about non-stop action and drama! I loved The Last War! Admiral Mattis is a fascinating protagonist and the plot is complicated. Earth is facing alien attacks and something is smelling bad with a Chinese leader. I can hardly wait for the next book!

Even tho the first few pages were relatively slow, the pickup after that made the difference. The story was great and the plot leads to a desire to continue reading the second book This is a war whose story shall grab your desire to read to the win while savoring the storyline.

I like this book!
There were no problems that annoyed me. I am very much bothered by poor editing, repetitive phrases, too much jumping around and characters that don't act logically. There were none of those in this book.
The story was believable, action packed and I can't wait for the sequel!

Strong characters. I particularly thought the main character's bouts of self doubt were well done. A good Storyline, though not all that original, but it's Space Opera, I think most of us want SOME contact with the familiar. I will read the next volumes in the series.

The Last War was entertaining throughout. It was full of action and written in a believable way. It was not over explained as some science fiction is, and left things in a mysterious way that makes the reader want more. I look forward to reading book two of the series.

Frankly, I was a little disappointed. I thought the main characters of Mattis and Guano were highly unbelievable in their behaviour. The story wasn't bad with a few twists and the ingenious use of mass drivers.
Thought your Legacy Fleet series much stronger and the characters of Proctor and Granger, much better.
Sorry.

Cold War intrigues, politics, aliens, and almost non-stop action! It doesn't get much better than this! The characters are familiar, but not staid. The crusty Admiral, the hot shot pilot, the angry politician, enemies working together for the greater good, all are integral to the story. Each one is well developed, likable (or not), and the interpersonal interactions are as key to the story as the battles out in space. Like all good stories, there are questions raised that aren't answered, leaving you looking forward to the next installment!
