Review:Lovely, haunting, poetic book -- for adults.
But, for a child, nostalgia for "the way we all used to play outdoors in an abandoned lot, decades ago" doesn't make a very interesting topic. Certainly there have been no repeat requests for this book at story hour. And mine is not a child who shuns the haunting, the subtle, the poetic. Read more

One Morning in Maine (Picture Puffins)
One Morning in Maine (Picture Puffins)

Review:Sweet book that I bought for my granddaughter and to read to students, but I find it rather dull. Not sure how it is a classic, perhaps boomers who remember it as children, it has not worn well - in my view. Read more

The Gardener
The Gardener

Review:"April showers bring May flowers." Sarah Stewart's The Gardener brings us the winsome story of a young flower lover, Lydia Grace Finch. Forced by the hard times of the Depression, Lydia leaves her family to go to the unfamiliar city to stay with her Uncle Jim, an unsmiling baker. While traveling by train, Lydia writes to Uncle Jim, admitting she knows nothing about baking, but a lot about gardening. In Lydia's subsequent letters to her Mama, Papa, and Grandma we discover just what Lydia thin... Read more

Locomotive (Caldecott Medal Book)
Locomotive (Caldecott Medal Book)

Review:The pictures, history, and the workings of a train and the cars are very informative. The book allows for interpretation without reading the details to a three year old. The 7 year old and the five year old are mesmerized by the pictures of the old west, how the train makes steam to move the wheels, and all of the workers involved in running a train. Read more

Classic Stories of Gods - Heroes & Monsters
Classic Stories of Gods - Heroes & Monsters

Review:I bought this book for my granddaughters for Christmas. It has gorgeous illustrations and the stories are well written - not too long, but they get the main ideas across. I would highly recommend it. It's a real book to enjoy the old fashioned way - page by page, story by story. My 8 year old granddaughter has become an expert on Greek myths!! Great on a coffee table for the whole family to enjoy. Read more

Septimus Heap, Book Three: Physik
Septimus Heap, Book Three: Physik

Review:Another great addition to this series! I love how every book brings us deeper and deeper into Septimus's apprenticeship and his "magykal" learnings, and Jenna's queenship. At first, I started this story with a little bit of... uncertainty, because it starts with a completely new character, Snorri Snorrelsen, the daughter of a Northern Trader. She may not seem like a main character, however, she actually has a lot of interaction with the other characters throughout the rest of the books.
I thi... Read more

13 Little Blue Envelopes
13 Little Blue Envelopes

Review:In this sequel to Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes, we reencounter Ginny Blackstone after she has returned from her European adventure. When we find her, she is struggling with college admissions essays (who hasn't been there) and seems to have lost a good deal of the vulnerability that made us so love her in the first novel. Ginny is then approached by a mysterious stranger in London (where else?), who has found her final envelope. This then leads to a second whirlwind journey to complete her ... Read more

Those Darn Squirrels!
Those Darn Squirrels!

Review:I think I remember why I bought "Those Darn Squirrels" yesterday. I'm looking for a book to read to my son's class, and am skipping through reviews on kids' books on Amazon, and came across this book. We have some bird feeders up and love squirrels and grumpy grandpa types :), the title was funny, the reviews were good, the summary seemed like it would be up our alley and the graphics looked very humorous and appealing. Tonight I read the book to dear son on kindle at bedtime, and we LOVED this ... Read more

The True Story of Balto (Step into Reading) - The Bravest Dog Ever

Review:I remember when I was a kid absolutely loving this book! As a child, I loved the heroic tale of Balto and enjoyed the detailed pictures. Now, almost 20 years later as an artist, I still enjoy the illustrations and simple plot. Great for kids! Read more
