Historical Fiction
Review:My ten year old daughter writes:
"The story concept has a lot of mystery to it's meaning. The fact that the 12yr old ghost try's to come back to life made it all the more scary and exciting. It also shows you that no body is perfect all the time and that good will all ways rise above the bad. I recommend this story to young readers that love exciting, adventures, scary mysteries." Review:Unexpectedly good. Took me a few pages for the story to catch, but once it did, it flowed pretty well. I especially enjoyed reading about the Irish point of view of WWII. Generally, it is the story of a young Irish girl who grows up during the late 1930s-1940s, and volunteers for the war effort when she is a young woman. I really got into the story, and I would definitely read another book by this author. Read more
Review:A young woman inherits a dilapidated -more than that, ruined- old house in a remote island. When she visits, with the idea of turning the house into a hotel/resort, she finds a skeleton in the remains of the house.
This was the family house of a famous painter, who lived there with his young wife 100 years before.
The story narrates both the events of 1910 as well as the situation in 2010.
As the story goes back and forth, we find out more about Theo Blake, the painter, and his fami... Read more
Review:When my sibling and I were children more than once our mother read this book aloud to us. Chapters were doled out carefully and we each had our favorite. Mutt's determination to level the playing field by fence walking like the neighborhood cats, was my favorite.
Yes, you could call this book dated. It was written about a time in the past (1930's in Saskatoon, Canada) but it has the universal themes of relationships, discovery and the sadness of parting. That is what makes it relevant... Read more
Review:Most of lm Montgomerys books are very similar in the story line. This one was very different and entertaining. I find it a great read, very enjoyable. A little more on the scandalous side for the time it was written, making it even more interesting. Read more
Review:The Captured Bride
Michelle Griep is an author I have not read before. I will look for others from this talented writer, she has a way of making words “sing.” This story is historical fiction at its best. The characters captured my attention right away. They were richly painted in technicolor right from the first paragraph. The leading role is Mercy, a female scout in the French and Indian war in 1759.
“Praise always prickled, for it usually meant she’d be asked for more than she was wil... Read more
Review:Though the premise of this novel is interesting--the ghost of a Chinese girl is telling the story--it is incredibly ridiculous. She chooses to starve herself to death rather than marry the man of her parents' choice, though ironically (and predictably) he is her true love. Snore...The rest--her interaction with his second and third wives is somewhat interesting and keeps the novel going, but really, once you're dead...who cares? Read more

Review:Fun read in the series of the Cynster family. Characters from previous novels are skillfully interwoven so you can appreciate catching up with the family, but you dont have to have read the earlier books to enjoy this one. Read more
Review:This is one of my favorite SL stories ever. Dalziel/Royce's background didn't end up being quite as scandalous as I anticipated, but that was okay since his romance with Minerva was so brilliant. I love Minerva! She's such a strong female lead, one who knows her own heart and isn't afraid of her feelings, but doesn't let her emotions rule her - she keeps a cool head while dealing with Royce and all the assorted issues that come up. She actually reminded me quite a bit of a very mature Honori... Read more
