This is an interesting short story about a lighthouse minder in space. One thing I especially liked about it was its connection to the real world — even though the story takes place hundreds of years in the future, it is still Earth-based and the character works for NASA, communicates with Houston, and monitors the Milky Way.

This juicy morsel of masterful suspense writing grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. I haven't been in such a state since I purchased a copy of a little known (at the time) short story called "Wool". Once again: Superb work, Mr. Howey!

Another fantastic short by Howey. As with his other short stories, there is so much detail packed into so few words. Imagine modern day lighthouses as beacons in space, complete with the utter loneliness of the men and women who occupy them. What happens if one of these beacons inexplicably stops working and risks the lives of thousands? Or, if you come to realize what's happened, can you handle the repercussions? Well done, Hugh. Can't wait to see what's next!

So much packed into this wonderful short story. I had no idea heading into this what it was about but I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. I love stories that one can squeeze into our busy world and this was perfect. Mr Howey again provides he is an excellent writer with an insight to make what could be an average story into an excellent one.

I enjoyed the technology that the protagonist has to use and maintain to save his sanity and cover the responsibility he has. Very good idea of what life and work will be like in the future in space.

I really enjoy Hugh Howey's stories. I have read a bunch of his books and so when I saw this I bought it immediately. Initially, I was disappointed cause it was only twenty pages. Then I read it and was immersed in it. In a few short pages Mr. Howey takes you to deep space and chucks you right into a predicament. I am glad to see this is part one cause I sure want more of this. 20 pages/100% good.

Hugh can really do no wrong. Even though the "semi-forced solitude under vague distant authority" premise is well worn for him, he always finds a way to dig new earth. This series is to be ravenously absorbed as all of his work is. Thanks Hugh!

I quite enjoyed this short read from Hugh Howey. Though quite different in style, seeing a book with a space setting in it made me want more from the Molly Fyde series. I'm not sure what a squeal to this will look like, but I look forward to checking it out if one is released.

Loved this short, claustrophobic, desperate, tense, and exciting adventure story. The story of a small deep space beacon operator smartly laced with maritime imagery. For my money, best Howey short story since the original Wool.
