I highly recommend this book. As a physician, I received very little training on nutrition beyond the simple "calories in / calories out" concept, with a minor focus on what the composition actually looked like. Dr. Longo presents some of his lab's groundbreaking research on fasting and fasting mimicking diets, as well as some general guidelines for what to eat every day, which I find tremendously useful and plan to implement myself. The book does a great job of synthesizing the research behind nutritional interventions and longevity, building a strong foundation of understanding for those who may not have much previous exposure to the concept. As another reviewer pointed out, the specific amount of macronutrients per day during regular eating are somewhat light, but the general concepts are so powerful and important that I think the book as a whole will end up being required reading as fasting becomes a more widely-appreciated modality in the U.S.

I'm particularly interested in some of the future applications of fasting in regards to disease processes, and will be following with great interest.

The research on health benefits of fasting may lead to a revolution in how we think about illness. The author starts with his life story, which is only mildly interesting. He also offers nutritional advice, which is a topic where he has not done his homework, e.g. recommending olive oil and fish consumption. Nevertheless, the book is worth reading for the information on fasting.

I am SO pleased that Valter Longo has written this book as I have been trying to explain to people about all his exciting work on the effects of fasting and now I can get them to buy the book!
Most books on diet are based on pseudoscience and wishful thinking so it is refreshing to find an evidence-based book that tackles the real issue and that is Longevity. There are many diets that make you lose weight but are unhealthy in the long-run.

Congratulations Valter! Your book is written is a authentic and interesting style and I read the whole book in two days (which is very unusually for me). Absolutely a wonderful book that I will be recommending to everyone!

I liked all the scientific information about studies on longevity in an area we can control...our food. Ancestor's diet consideration was interesting... mine's definitely NOT Mediterranean. The "mimicking fasting" explanation was very sketchy and I can't figure out how to do it???

Good info on fasting / lowering glucose for starving and weakening some cancers. Starts with "6 stars" out of 5.

But, he gets minus stars for ...
1. For not telling us what that diet actually is (minus two stars)
2. For lumping saturated fats and trans fats together. And too easily believing the meta analysis that he relies on.
3. For not differentiating between corn and soy bean fattened beef and grass fed beef.

Plus one star for not needlessly insulting past science even if it's not that good. But minus one for being too afraid to do so.

Great book, solid evidence-based information. I read this book in a couple of hours and I can find no fault with Dr. Longo's advice. Everything he shares is fully referenced with credible research and scientific affirmation. The gist of the content is that we need to allow our bodies time each day to detoxify and regenerate. He suggests "fasting" for at least 12 hours a day which is pretty simple to accomplish. Sleeping for 8 hours and stopping eating 2-3 hours before bed will almost get you there. He recommends a diet high in complex carbohydrates (whole grains, vegetables, legumes), moderate in fat (!5-20% of calories) and around 8-10% of calories from protein (mostly from plant sources). This eating pattern is associated with reduced risks for cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. It is also the diet shared by the worlds longest living populations. I read all the reviews before posting mine and the only bad reviews are from low carb/ keto/ paleo folk who don't want it to be true and don't seem to prefer scientific data or evidence based information.

I am aware of the material Longo is drawing from. We are a physician family and have followed Walford and others over the years. Just a quick glance at the 2 week diet has some problems. Wheat and bread products are a problem for leaky gut..a huge problem in medicine today. I like this book more for the medicine of fasting material. Anyone sensitive to wheat should only use gluten free products.

Dr. Longo has provided not only solid theory but clinical support for the fast-mimicking diet. The descriptions and accounts are easy to follow and, given Dr. Longo's rock musician beginnings, are engaging throughout. At American Health Journal, my PBS program, we will be following the progress of this science and these products with much more than a passing interest. In fact, I plan to begin the Prolon Health and Longevity soon.

The book was very misleading. The studies mentioned on the Okinawian Diet in the book showed a diet with 34% coming from Whole Grains. That may be true today but not for the centenarians studied. There diet is completely different from the diet they had from the 40s which was 70% sweet potatoes and very little grain. This new Okinawian Diet can not be used to promote longevity since its not the same diet of the past. Personally, I had a client that was on a similar diet to the current Okinawian Diet who is a personal trainer and was a 100 pounds over weight. I got him to switch to a low carb and whole foods diet and after 2.5 years he lost 100 pounds and has kept it off the last 1.5 years. His doctor checked his blood profile and he had one of the healthiest blood profiles he had seen. The diet described in this book would have very little affect on someone with severe insulin resistance. It seems like the author got paid by some outside source that has a major agenda to point the general public in the wrong direction.

Very little details information on diseases, their causes and restoration of health. Relies mainly on epidemiological studies that prove nothing. This diet is flawed as it relies heavily on starches to cure diseases including diabetes, caused by those very starches. As an insulin resistant person that grew up on just such a diet only to get quite sick, I am never going back.

I borrowed this book from the library because it was recommended by Max Lugavere. What a disappointment.
Longo writes "When you look at multidisciplinary studies, you realize that the high-protein, high-saturated-fat, and low-carb diet is one of the worst for your health...Also, if we examine the laboratory studies, we see that both high protein intake and high saturated fat intake are associated with aging and disease..." (47-8)
What studies and who funded those studies? There is plenty of data supporting low carbohydrate, ketogenic and high saturated fat diets. To start, read The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz.

I reversed my T2D without medication, raised my HDL, lowered my triglycerides and H-CRP by eating a very low carbohydrate, high saturated mostly meat diet. Also, I lost 40 pounds and keep it off effortlessly! My health has improved dramatically - the OPPOSITE of what this author states!

In addition, the author recommends whole grains and legumes for people with T2D. If you have T2D, EAT TO YOUR METER. Eat a serving of a whole grain or of legumes and test your BG 2 hours later. If it goes above 120 you need to eliminate it from your diet. Otherwise you won't be able to lower your HA1C, you won't be able to get off meds and will probably need to increase them, and your condition will worsen over time.
Also, this author recommends eating only .31-.36g protein/lb body weight which isn't enough to support basic metabolism or to maintain muscle mass.
Eat this way - maybe you'll have a long life, but be fragile, weak, and sick, and if you have T2D your life will be shortened.

Mr Longo, you have written an infomercial, that's all! I paid over $16 and wasted hours reading the bs that you wrote. You had me up until page 98; now I question everything I read that you wrote. You are NOT a scientist but a just a simple man apparently trying to scam people out of their money. Mr Longo, you almost had me convinced, but it turns out that this book is nothing more than an ad for some high priced crap to waste money on. You should be ashamed of yourself! I cannot use the words that I am thinking in regards to Mr Longo and this book! Page 98, followed by a quick check on google.com proves the points I made..
