Ellen Emerson is a miracle worker. She really gave me the feeling I was crossing the prairie. It was great. It showed me exactly how many illnesses and deaths can occur on such an amazing journey. Now after I read this book, I realize how I would feel on this voyage.

Just the way that Kristina Gregory described what was happening was amazing! If you like historical fiction you'll LOVE this book! There was a little bit of every-thing, love, enemies, deaths, happiness. It really goes to show you how every day is so precious.

I liked the book because it teaches people about

what it was like on the Oregon Trail.

I think this is a good book for kids who are

studying the Oregon Trail because you get a lot

of good facts about the Oregon Trail from it.

Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie was nicely written. It really sounds like a 13 year-old girl is writing it. There are many hardships during the journey, but there's also many good times. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

this book really let me see what was happening on the oregon trail and really taught me about what life was like traveling across the U.S.
the book explains in detail about westward migration life during the mid 1800's like what supllies were needed for survival and the dangers. I really enjoyed experiencing this book and it now sits on my bookshelf as one of my favorite historical fiction novels. This book is an easy read and recommend it to all ages!!

The diary of Hattie Campbell is one of my personal favorite Dear America book. Where a lot of the book is fictional there are real places that they name along the trail in which really exsisted. The story goes how Hattie has these great adventures for the whole way to oregon. She meets friends and becomes very close to many people. She experiences many obsticals along the way but manage to get through them. This book gets a very high rating from me!

I use this book to teach about the westward expansion in U.S. History for ESL students. The language is simple enough for high school ESL students and the content keeps them interested. It shows the struggles of the pioneers moving west and also includes issues with the indians, mormons, the Donner party and missionaries in the west. At the same time, the main character goes through normal adolescent trials that the students will be able to relate to.

This was the second "Dear America" book I read and even now, after I've read the entire series, it remains my favorite. The blend of good and bad things and sudden surprises makes this book truly great. I applaud the author of this book.

Excellent book for teaching the Oregon Trail journey! I have used this book for 4 years to teach about hardships pioneers faced while traveling west on the Oregon Trail. It gives a realistic view of life on the trail, from joys to the lose of life.

I remember reading this book in junior high and I absolutley adored it! It was tragic, but it also held a flair of romance. The author was able to capture the audiences attention by using vivid details when describing scenes fromt the book. I highly recommend this book!!

This is, in my opinion, the best Dear America book I have read so far. The format it is written in, Hattie's diary, is a wonderful format for a new reader to this series. It lets the reader expierience Hattie's feelings of being moved across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie.

This book is okay - not good, and definately not perfect. Hattie is SUCH a stereotype of "headstrong, unladylike, has a well-behaved best friend" that I've seen way too many times. The action is not as good as in the Oregon Trail game, and Hattie's family is pretty stereotypical too. Still read, it's not truly terrible...

This is my favorite Dear America book. It combines horrible happenings with wonderful moments to create a wonderful story. Sometimes i felt like crying, but other times i almost burst out laughing. A wonderful book.

I purchased this book for my middle school daughter. Boy did it show how hard life was for early Americans traveling across the Oregon Trail. This book is a great way to show today's kids how easy they really have it!

Across the Wide and Lonesome Prarie was my second Dear America book(I have them all) and although I was 7 years old when I first read it, I got very interested with the American West because of this book. I loved how every day something exciting, good and bad, happened. This book is still one of my favorites!I recomend it!

I was never really interested in the oregan trail until I read this bbok. I found it so fascinating! I never realized how dangerous and exciting it was until I read this. Though it is fictional, it seemed so real! I loved the history of it. And the way the author made the charectors and events real captured my attention throughout the entire book! Though the book was great, I reccomend it for readers ages 10-12. It's great for people who already know about the oregan trail, and especially for those who don't. Out of all the Dear America books, I say this was the best!

This book is wonderful. I got it from the library and I fell in love with it. It is about a girl who is on the Oregon Trail. She faces MANY hardships, including crossing rivers, deaths, and fear of dying.
This book is really cool. You should try to read it. I found it easy to read and there are many surprises in the book. I love all Dear America books (except Standing In The Light) and I have to say that this is one of my favorites.

Somehow I made the assumption this was an actual account of a trip or at least was based on one. It is not. It is a well written novel of a what a trip could have been like with probably many incidents in it taken from real life experiences and stories from that era. So, I was disappointed and maybe a little naïve in making my assumption. It is worth reading if you have an interest in this
part of our history. It is a quick and easy read with a considerable amount of history in the form of a realistic fictional account of what a journey could have been like for a family.

The only disappointment is that it was not just her diary, but a compilation of other people's stories, which I hadn't realized. Kept thinking; she's seen more in her childhood than I had seen in 60 years until I found that out. But it's a good book!
