The Peacock Emporium

I recommend this book to everyone! The characters can be identified with so easily. Everyone knows someone who is living a bit differently than they would have you believe. The story made me laugh, cry, and think about life and love. Beautifully crafted. Never liked to put this book down.

Jojo Moyes is such a great storyteller and reading her books just keeps me so invested in them. The Peacock Emporium was no exception. She brings the past and the present together in a fascinating way.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book,found it a little difficult to get into but once in..great quite sad in spots,intriguing family history behind the main character(a female). The ending had my heart racing hoping that all would end well after a very disastrous accident!!!

An immersive and beautifully crafted story of four Australian war brides heading home to Mother England to be reunited with their naval husbands at the end of WWII. Jojo Moyes creates wonderfully believable, flawed characters whose histories slowly unfold during the six week journey at sea. Her historical attention to detail feels natural and unforced as you are pulled deeper and deeper into their lives and the lives of wider characters aboard the ship. I read this book in two sittings, it was hard to put down, and I felt I was leaving a world of newly made friends when I reached the end. Thoroughly recommend.

Easy read. Lots of fun. The subject matter was interesting, especially knowing that it was based on a real voyage. I am working my way through Jojo Moyes' novels and this one did not disappoint. I would recommend it to my sister.

Engaging but predictable. A good easy, summer read. This is a prolific author. I wonder if her other books lack dimension? I'm not ready to read one yet to find out. But, if I get a recommendation, I might.

I liked her contrast of characters and their descriptions.
The story was carefully crafted . The end tied in with the opening chapter.,which initially didn't seem relevant to the story itself.
The seemed a bit prolonged.
All in all a very enjoyable read

I really loved this story. The characters were so well developed and I found myself reading well into the night anticipating what would happen next to each one. I really felt invested in each one. Jojo Moyes is a very good writer, she is definitely one of my favorites.

This is another superb novel by JoJo Moyes - one of the best I've ever read. I LOVED this book and highly recommend it.
Her style of writing and cast of memorable characters made it an outstanding book from beginning to end.

Was a really lovely read. I did however get confused between the main characters as their stories weren't separated by chapters. One paragraph you're reading about someone, then in the next paragraph it jumps to someone else and it takes a while to realise who it is. While the writing style wasn't my thing, the book was interesting and I did look forward to picking the book up.

I found this Jojo Moyes novel rather disappointing, especially after reading 'Me before you' which I thoroughly enjoyed despite its theme. Somehow or somewhere, I 'lost' the thread of this novel and found the characters 'two-dimensional' and 'contrived'. So I hope she returns to modern-day themes with her gritty humour and insightful writing.

I love reading Jojo Moyes' novels but I found the storyline for Peacock Emporium very pedestrian until I'd read about 70% of the book when I felt I was finally "getting into it". Having thoroughly enjoyed so many of her other novels, this one didn't live up to my expectations.

A thrilling adventure on the seas . . So well written I could feel the waves and smell the fragrances . The grime of life on board for weeks on end. . tender love and the lack of privacy afforded by close proximity . . a joy to read . . the relief of forgiveness . .

Kind of hard to understand the some the expressions used by the Austrailian military and the women on the boat. Good story line. I finished the book because I like Ms. Moyes' previous works. Not one of my favorites.

This book centers on a little known event in history during the War about 600 Australian women who were put aboard a carrier to be delivered to their husbands in England. The author centers on 4 women during the trip. I like this author but not this book. It's an easy read, the characters are well developed but that's it , for lack of better words the book is dull. The women have maybe one or two things happen to them but other than that, dull is the only way to describe this book. The women mostly talk and talk and talk, about their present situation, or their past or what their future will be.This is not an awful book but it is boring. If you're looking for an easy read that will not tax your brain, that will give you a little insight into the past and how women were treated this book will do the job. Do not expect to stay up nights turning pages on this one - it's not going to happen.

I am pretty harsh in awarding stars. This story centers around village/small community life with a handful of believable characters , it is correspondingly how one woman tries to find fulfillment in herself and her life.
It isn't dramatic or thrilling, I would say more of a canter with a few unexpected hurdles.

A delightful mix of characters and set post World War II. A very interesting insight into what more than likely really did go on with these Brides heading off to Britain to meet up with their 'war husbands.

Australian lovelies wed British soldiers during World War II after brief courtships. Post-war after long separations from their grooms, the government ships the brides to England. Most made the trip on converted passenger ships in comparable comfort. The setting of this book is a damaged aircraft carrier where one deck is roughly fitted with cabins filled with bunks. The uncomfortable long voyage focuses on four brides and provides diverse twists as each bride's story is revealed. All the expected difficulties arise from hasty marriages to comparative strangers, but some unexpected twists add tension. The characters and the historical background are interesting and well developed.

This was a most informative book. It told the story of Australian War Brides returning to England and uncovered an historical event. Jojo Moyes has the ability to weave narrative on to an historical event. The characters were interesting and diverse. All in allthis is a book that I would highly recommend.

A lovely story about Australian brides travelling by ship to their husbands in England after the 2nd world war. I've read other Jojo Moyes books, and although I found this not quite as compelling as her other books, I did enjoy the story and would recommend to other Jojo Moyes fans.

Over six hundred Australian women married to British serviceman travel across the world on an aircraft carrier to begin new lives in Britain just after WWII. Like these brides who travel from Sydney to Bombay to Ceylon, through the Suez Canal to Plymouth, England --- this story is all over the place. The focus is on four cabin mates: Jean, Maggie, Avice and the mysterious Frances. The twists and tangles continually took me by surprise. Through it all, some of which cried out for an editor, I wanted Frances and the Marine to find love with one another. The suspense was palpable.
