I Liked the plot, character development, and the detectives reasoning skills, over all a good read. Looking forward to book two. Hoping it continues to entertain. Intrigue and Mysteries readers will enjoy.

A really good mystery. Mostly clean reading but with a little inappropriate words. I don't know why authors minds thing like that most times people don't talk like that. But I do recommend the series. Really good reading.

Roger Stelljes has created a truly believable and likeable character in Mac McRyan. Although young on the force, the officers regard him as a seasoned old timer, a reputation that was earned. Can't wait for the next book
The Three Deaths of Magdalene Lynton (Detective Ngaire Blakes Book 1) :: Stone Fox (Harper Trophy Book) :: The Pagan Stone (The Sign of Seven Book 3) :: Stone (Stone Cold Fox Trilogy Book 1) :: Absolutely gripping crime fiction with unputdownable mystery and suspense (Detective Josie Quinn Book 3)

I probably would have given this book 5 stars... except for the fact I failed to realize it was a "novella" when I ordered it. It did, however, lift my spirits a bit... haven't finished a book that fast in a long time. :-)

A pre-quel and tightly written book that creates a wonderful foundation to build the future "McRyan mysteries " around. First I was attracted to the price. After reading this book you'll understand, the old saying, "don't judge a book by it's cover" or it's price either!!!

The author obviously knew and loved the setting, St. Paul. He knew police, investigative, post mortem procedure. He liked his beer and hockey. He was devoted to his family...... He was a little blind when it came to love.
I want to read a little more about this man.

Actually, I enjoyed reading the book all the way through until I came to the end. The conclusion was unsatisfactory because it was contrived to fit the main character. One of the first things taught in Writing 101 is that contrived plots are no-nos.

Good story line, but not long enough. My fault though because I started with a later book by the author. His writing keeps you reading till you want more. He also adds a a lot in his stories that relate to real cops.

Roger Stelljes brings you back to the start of Detective Mac McRyan's career and keeps you engrossed with page-turning suspense as Mac solves the back alley murder of a lawyer while dealing with issues in his own life. While it isn't necessary to read this novella prior to enjoying Stelljes' novels "The St. Paul Conspiracy" and "Deadly Stillwater" it does give you a nice background on McRyan. Looking forward to the next McRyan mystery...

As always I enjoyed the McRyan stories although this one didn't seem long enough to me. Seems like I started it and was through reading before I new it. I will certainly read all of them as the series expands

This book, though using the same characters as his other books, is much more of a novella than a full blown novel. The characters aren't as well shaped and defined, nor is his plot as intricate. It would appear that this is his first book, even though it was published several years later. Ie joyed it, but it is not his best effort.requel
