Too many sex scenes. Not enough story. I could barely make myself finish the book and didn't care much about the characters. Mark was a different man here, very shallow. In a second book the author showed Mark's feelings, regrets, and 2 days later he is so attracted to Crystal, who behaved as a spoiled teenager. I just did not feel any chemistry between them, and did not see a reason why author decided to write this book. Also, writing from Mark's point of view made him sound more like a woman.

Warning
If you have not read Being Me, DO NOT read this review is contains major spoilers!!!
Let me first start of my clarifying that this is a novella it is NOT a journal the only journals are Rebecca's four journals that were release prior to Being Me.
One of the things I loved about this novella was that it picked up right after the end of Being Me not sometime in the past or sometime way into the future. Mark has been dealing with a lot lately and he is starting to come undone. He flies out to New York when he discovers his mother has stage 3 breast cancer and needs to be by her side. What surprises Mark is that his ride from the airport is a gallery employee by the name of Crystal. Right away she's testing his control she doesn't want to be told what to do and isn't having it when Mark tells her what she should and shouldn't do. Still reeling from the loss of Rebecca from the hands of another submissive he's slowly starting to lose his well maintained control and you watch him start to unravel very slowly. He's hurting and it doesn't help matters that Rebecca was the closest thing he ever had to actually loving a woman and it's hard to watch because as much as he likes to pretend nothing is wrong he feels partly responsible for her death.
His feelings toward Crystal start to grow and as much as he wants to try to ignore the sexual tension between them it soon becomes too much. She says it's only sex and changes nothing but I feel to the both of them it's so much more and you'll watch as he slowly starts to lose his control it's interesting to see this side of Mark because he's always some calm, cool, collected and in control of everything. Which leads me to wanting to learn so much more about Mark and especially Crystal. How much does Crystal know about Mark? Does their relationship turn into more? This was a great addition to the series and I cannot wait to find out what happens in the future! Lisa has created another wonderful addition to this series and I absolutely loved it, 5 stars!

Like the phoenix that rises from the ashes of destruction, The Master Undone is a story of both triumph and tragedy. As book 2.5 in the Inside Out series, it is absolutely essential that this novella be read in sequence. If you purchase Rebecca’s Lost Journals, this novella is included as a bonus, but should be read later in the series.
Author Lisa Renee Jones focuses on gallery owner Mark Compton, a man who is the epitome of a true Alpha personality. Although introduced in the beginning of the series, this installment is told from Mark’s point of view.
Mark has always been portrayed as needing a woman who is submissive. Yet when he meets Crystal, the sparks start flying as their personalities collide. This installment does a fantastic job showing the different facets of Mark’s character, which is one of the reasons why the title is so appropriate.
When you take a dominant male who is used to maintaining power and control and pair him with an equally non-submissive female, you are guaranteed an explosive connection. By the end of the novella, readers will be prepped for a resolution, but it’s not quite time for the big reveal.

This novella picks up right where “Being Me” left off. Mark is trying to cope with loss and guilt. His mother’s health issues are also causing a strain on his senses and he travels to go see her. In New York, he meets Crystal, a Riptide employee who is unlike anyone he’s met before. She’s someone who he would never be interested in, yet the need to have her is strong.
Previously, we caught glimpses of a softer Mark. In this novella, Mark finds himself in uncharted territory because he feels out of control. Things are not working out how he wishes them to and there is nothing he can do about the outcome. Seeing Mark in a different light makes me like him more than before.
Although Sara gave him somewhat of a challenge before, Crystal challenges him in a different way and it’s so good to see. I believe he knew that once Chris got his hands on Sara, it would be impossible for him to separate them, though he still tried. Crystal, on the other hand, is a possibility and he finds the challenge to be very sweet.
Lisa is doing a wonderful job taking us on a roller coaster with all kinds of twists and turns. This story is so amazing and I can’t wait to read more about all these characters.

Finally!!!!
Mark is flying to NY to attend to some business and to see his mother who has fallen ill. His mother, like him, is a strong, independent woman and to see her in such a fragile state wrecks Mark in ways he is not accustomed to.
There he meets Crystal who is looking out for the business dealings of the company while Mark's mother is recuperating. Their attraction is instant, but Mark is a Dom and he has vowed not to make the same mistakes he did with his last submissive.
However, Crystal is no submissive. She's independent, head-strong, sassy and honest to a fault. She won't deny her attraction to Mark, but she will not bend to his desires. She calls it like she sees it and this further complicates matters in Mark's mind.
I loved this novella!!!
It was such fun to see Mark being so conflicted over his attraction to Crystal and his desires as a Dom. Add to that the fact that he was already vulnerable because of his mother and you got yourself a fantastic little read. I loved it!!!
This was a short read but so very worth the time. I can't wait for me of Crystal and Mark's story. Between their chemistry and their personalities, spark will be flying soon!

If I Were You, follows Sarah McMillan in her pursue of the truth about what happened to Rebecca, the writer of a stack of erotic and enthralling personal journals she stumbled upon. She immerses herself in Rebecca’s life and is drown to two sexy men (Chris and Mark) when she realizes she’s following Rebecca’s path. She gets too far gone into one of the men, who seems to promise to tend to her dark desires and has her bound to his confidence and need for control.
The two novellas, The Master Undone and My Hunger, are told from Rebecca’s Master’s point of view, and spin off into another romance where two Alpha personalities clash.
The reason I’m doing an overall review of these three books is that I didn’t really like any of them. All three get barely two stars each in my book. And the only reason they get to two, is that the mystery got me curious. Just not enough to go through with the series; following Sarah in her digging was a little interesting, but since there wasn’t much of it going on and there was mostly swooning and all-that-jazz the interesting factor just ended there. So I skipped book two.
On we go to the novellas. The Master Undone has no depth whatsoever; maybe because it’s just a novella and is short, but it seems that if Ms. Jones was opting to use these book and do a follow up in My Hunger, there should be more character development, and we should have gotten a little bit more on the reasons and emotions behind the actions. The Master Undone is a lot about the narrator telling us how he feel and how he is not, but not about the real him.
And finally (FINALLY!) My Hunger, which follows up in The Master Undone, and is just as flat. Both books together could have been an interesting spin off of the series, certainly a little more interesting relationship-wise than the main series, but separate, they are just blah.
Ultimately, the fact that these three books separately didn’t even warrant their own review for me, should tell you exactly how I felt about the series. If not, let me just tell you: DON’T; I didn’t like it at all.

THE MASTER UNDONE is the fifth novella in Lisa Renee Jones Inside Out Novellas and told from the `Masters' POV. This storyline is not a retelling of any particular part of the series thus far, but is a story about what happens next after `The Master' discovers what has happened to his sub Rebecca.
It has been 48 hours since `The Master' discovered that his current sub was responsible for the disappearance of Rebecca-a woman who wanted more from `The Master' then he was willing or ready to give. But `The Master's' anguish over Rebecca will have to be tempered when a more urgent matter-one that involves his mother-may bring the strong, alpha male to his knees. With his personal life in turmoil, `The Master' will discover a feisty, independent female, a woman whom his mother respects and trusts, in the guise of one Crystal Smith.
Crystal is a woman who is definitely not a submissive. She is an alpha female, with a take charge attitude and knows when to move on. She recognizes that this man is in a vulnerable position and she is more than willing to be his playmate for one night. But when `The Master' awakens to an empty bed, he knows only one thing-he must find Crystal-now.
THE MASTER UNDONE is a short story where Lisa reveals a different side to `The Master'-a powerful man we have seen dominate and control-but a man who is just as susceptible to the foibles of the reality of life as any other human. He is man who realizes that he cannot save everyone, no matter what the cost to his heart or his wallet. Lisa pulls the reader into a different point of view but one that lays naked a man's emotions, deepest pain and love of family. The Master Undone is a fascinating and welcome addition and change from the normal-a man's POV in an erotic storyline

So, I pretty much lust after the Inside Out series. Lisa Renee Jones totally sucked me in and I so did some fan girl squealing when I saw that The Master Undone was going to be told from Mark's point of view. (and gah! total covergasm) I'm a bit twisted I guess because Mark, dear lord, the arrogant bastard so does it for me. It was a nice treat getting a peak inside his private life.
And gotta say. I'm loving Mark even more now than I have in the previous installments. You get to see a different side of him in The Master Undone and it was a nice change. He's not completely in control or on top of his game like he usually is as he rushes home to be by his mother's side as she goes in for a major surgery. He's really needing someone to hold on to get him through the ordeal which brings in Crystal--who works for his mother, is upfront and straight forward and not one bit intimidated by the big bad demanding Dom. Crystal and Mark were fantastic together. They have great chemistry, really connect and I just loved how her reactions (or lack there of) to his dominating personality kind of spun him. While there's not a ton in the steamy scene department what's there is hot and nicely done.
I had a great time watching Mark and Crystal interact, seeing some real emotions out of him and getting to meet his family. While I loved all that and the writing was tight and engaging the ending did leave something to be desired--at least for me. I'm hoping there will be more to these two when Mark's book eventually comes out but wishing, just a little, I'd held off on reading this until then.

I read this book without knowing anything about the premise or the characters. It was only upon finishing that I realised it was part of a series but I think it is a testament to the author and her writing that I was able to enjoying this story without any prior history.
I was intrigued by Mark and his point of view, he was obviously alluding to events and characters that shaped his life and I was left wanting to know every single thing about him.
I felt the emotion when he went to visit his mum and how he was trying to maintain his steely façade. He just didn't account for his mum's newest employee Crystal to bewitch him the way she did. Their interaction from the beginning was all foreplay, slowly building the sexual tension and heat until the end of the book when it culminated into some very hot, raw sex. This was really well written and a quick novella that I really enjoyed.
As I mentioned, I went into this book knowing nothing and now all I want to do is start at the beginning and learn the story behind Mark and find out the reasons for his beautifully tortured soul. I suspect fans of this series will love it even more as they have already formed a connection with the characters. So definitely worth a read. ~Ava

What. The Hell. Was That?!
Oh. My. God!
I simultaneously love and hate Lisa Renee Jones.
I have been reading this series (novels and novellas) from the beginning. I love them. And this novella has been no different than the others in the facts that it is sexy, smart, engaging and ends on a cliff hanger that makes you want to hurl your eReader at the author’s head and demand more.
If you’ve read the other books, you know that Mark Compton is a very complex man. As far as we can tell, he’s not “fifty shades of f***** up” but he IS a very dominant man who wants what he wants, how he wants it and preferably now. This novella takes place in the timeline after the finish of Being Me, the second book in the Inside Out Trilogy. He has just found out devastating news about his previous submissive/lover, Rebecca.
He is also facing going to NYC to visit his mother, the only person he can’t say no to, and being with her and his father as she faces major surgery. It’s scary and frustrating for him being out of control.
The woman who comes to pick him up at the airport intrigues him when he doesn’t want to be intrigued. And she is definitely not Rebecca.
This novella was packed full of sexual tension with one explicit sex scene that I’m certain scalded my fingers as I read it, and then ended abruptly, leaving me quite literally gaping at the screen and trying to scroll for more pages but nothing showed up.
Again, I simultaneously love and hate Lisa Renee Jones right now.
Well played, Ms Jones. Well played.

Ms. Jones fans' have been asking and waiting for this novella to come out. Though it was too damn short for my liking, Ms. Jones managed to again, capture my attention and again, managed to leave me with my jaw dropped to the floor with a teaser ending.
We knew, Mark Compton was going to get his own novella, and was it everything I expected? Yes! Mark is as hot as we have seen him from the previous books. However, this book differs as we get his darkest thoughts via his POV. He recently had a loss and he feels guilty about it. Along with that guilt, he just found out that his mom has cancer, poor guy. We really get know him as all his feelings are laid out for us to see. But this book is not about his loss but it's about Mark finally finding someone who will meet his needs, someone to challenge him if you will. I find it funny that Ms. Jones pairs him up with someone so much like him. They both have very strong persona, aggressive and very controlling. Unfortunately, their story does not end here. There was a bit of a cliff hanger at the end. I found myself swiping the screen of my ereader(several times) making sure that ending was not a mistake. Alas, it was not. But the good thing is Revealing Us will be out in just a few weeks. Not only that we get more of Mark, but we will definitely get more of Chris and Sara.

The Master Undone is a novella told in Mark Compton's point of view.
In this story we find Mark flying out to New York to visit his mother that's been hospitalized. Much to his surprise, Mark finds an unfamiliar, pretty blond picking him up at the airport. As we know Mark has a unique preference when it comes to picking his women. Crystal nowhere near fits that criteria but for some reason he is drawn to her and she to him. She finds her attractive and intriguing. He finds himself in the position where he allows touch and some intimacy that we rarely see in the previous books. There's no telling if its just because he feels lonely and just needed someone to be there during that difficult time or if Crystal herself.

I just can't get enough of this series. ( To read my ARC review for Book 2: Being Me click HERE) And I have to tell you that I enjoyed this little snippet as well...a peek into Mark's mind so to speak. I like that we get to see his vulnerable side not only when dealing with his mother but also how he feels and still wishes things could have ended up differently for Rebecca.
The Master Undone was short but I thought was very really well written. Unfortunately, the first two books are required to fully understand this intense saga. I for one love the new addition to this series and hope to read more about Mark and Crystal in the final book.

Finally, we finally get inside of Mark Compton's head! Master Undone is a short novella in the Inside Out series and it occurs the day after Being Me ends. After discovering what has happened to his last submissive, Rebecca, Mark's mind is reeling. He blames himself and vows not to get close to anyone again. Flying to new York to deal with a family emergency, Mark meets Crystal Smith, who works for his mother. Crystal is the exact opposite of what he normally likes: she's blonde, alpha and absolutely not submissive. Yet he finds himself incredibly turned on by her.
He has never needed a woman before, but right now he needs Crystal. He fights an internal war within his head to stay away from her. Which side will win?
I must admit that I was annoyed with mark in Being Me because of the way he tried to get between Sara and Chris. But this novella and little peek at Mark's thoughts quickly erased that. My only complaint is that this was way too short and it left me wanting more! I really hope there is another Mark POV novella in the near future to continue with this story line.
Once again Lisa Renee Jones delivers a great story. I have yet to meet one of her novels or novellas that I did not love. This has gotten me even more excited for the final book, Revealing Us, due out September 2013.

AHHHH! Sorry, I just had to get that out :) Master Undone was my favorite of the novellas from the Inside Out series. "Master" Mark Compton finds his match. After Mark receives the shocking news about Rebecca he must jet off the New York to deal with a family matter. Mark blames himself for what happened to Rebecca and has no interest in redemption or the pity and condolences Chris and Sara lay upon him. He refuses to believe he is not to blame and is numb as he travels to be by his mother's side. Then he meets Crystal, and let me just say she is one of my favorite heroines I have read in a very long time. Of course, being a "Master" Mark takes no orders from anyone... except Crystal. She has this equally dominant, yet sweet, personality that completely befuddles Mark. He has never reacted like this to a woman before and as much as he tries to fight the pull, he cannot. This novella stepped up the Inside Out series, and I cannot wait to get a hold of the rest of Mark's story!

I was fortunate enough to have won the first four in this correlational series, meant to be read with the Inside Out Trilogy by author Lisa Renee Jones. This was, however, the first one that I have read, and it does stand apart from the other 4 as this one focuses purely on Mark. This is the one of all 5 that you should NOT read until you have read both If I Were You and Being Me.
Throughout the stories we only get glimpses of Mark, and his story is left alone. Here, with his mother ill, he must travel to NYC to be with her, after a major altercation has rocked his world. It's funny to see him come so unglued when faced with Crystal: his first person narration allows the reader to see more of him than he normally allows, although I was slightly disappointed with the ending and the several secrets that are yet to be shared. However, it did give a different and softer side of Mark, as well as showing his ability to think about choices and coping mechanisms that he uses to stay so buttoned up and in control. I wasn't a huge fan of his in reading the novels, and while I won't say that I am a convert, I do feel that this book humanizes him in ways that were missing.
I received an ARC copy from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This part of Rebecca's journal entries is written by Mark. After the death of a Rebecca is discovered in Being Me, his guilt takes a total turn on him. He can't think of anything else. He's remembering that Rebecca was more then just a sub to him. He doesn't want to get involved with another woman ever again, and hurt her, or hurt himself. Yet he meets the perfect woman, Crystal, after his mother becomes ill and he goes to visit her in the hospital. This beautiful, strong, controlling woman is everything that he could ever want and more BUT she's the exact opposite kind of woman that he attracts. Will Crystal be good for him? Will he be able to keep control of her like he does with his subs?
I really enjoyed reading this part of the journal entries because Mark's character is always so hidden and secretive throughout these books. He doesn't put himself out. He doesn't have emotional bonds with females, or anyone for that matter. He uses women to screw and that's it. I simply cannot wait til the TV series starts! Whatta great series this is and of course LRJ still remains on the top of my favorites list. <3

I received an ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review. Lisa Renee Jones proves once again that she is a master at writing erotic suspense. She truly is gifted at placing the reader in the mind of the character so we can experience every thought, every concern and every desire, while becoming fully intrigued. In this novella, we learn Mark's inner most thoughts. His dominant self is put on the back burner and we get an intimate look at his vulnerable self, the part of him that actually feels genuine concern about his mother's well being as well as guilt, pain and regret over what happened to Rebecca. Most surprisingly, we get to see Mark relinquish control to a woman, something he apparently hasn't done for years and vows never to do again. The odd thing is, Mark doesn't seem to be able to resist this woman's power over him. For once, Mark's the one feeling things, some emotions perhaps, and feelings of doubt and insecurity begin to creep in his mind. We know there is something in Mark's past that is holding him back from love. Will this new employee be the key that unlocks the mystery behind the man and his need for control? Has the Master finally met his match and become undone? Come September, we shall see, and I for one, can hardly wait!!!

“I’m supposed to be able to control my thoughts. I’m a Master. A title that defines who I am and how I stay grounded. My thumb is always on the pulse of everything that happens around me—or so I thought. For the first time since college, I’m not sure if that’s true. I’m not sure it was ever true, and I don’t know where that leaves me. I don’t know who that makes me.”
So we finally get to see who Rebecca’s master is. I am happy to say that I got it right. This is a very short novella. Only 40 pages. It takes place 24hrs after he finds out that his current sub is responsible for Rebecca’s disappearance. I felt more drawn to Mark’s story then to Sara and Chris. That is saying a lot since I loved Chris. I loved how he is craving a woman right now more than he is craving control. Not much to say except this was a good setup for the next few books.

Mark was going to spend time with his ill mother. Never did he think he would meet a woman that made him feel uneasy. She was annoying him, because she was just like him. He could not stop thinking about her, and knew he should not touch her. He needed to think about his family. Will he cross that line between co-worker and lover? Read THE MASTER UNDONE to find the answer to those questions.
I have enjoyed reading the inside out trilogy starting with the book IF I WERE YOU. This novella did not disappoint. I loved her character Mark in this book. You can feel his pain while he was with his ill mother. He was a very believable character, especially in this book. You see the human side of Mark and I found that refreshing. Like most of Lisa Renee Jones books you feel satisfied, but left wanting more. A great read! THIS BOOK CONTAINS BEING ME SPOILERS. BOOKS SHOULD BE READ IN ORDER, SEE ABOVE SUGGESTION.
