it's raw with so much emotion (said from a emotional person perspective). I found myself just as in milk and honey marking page after page. However some of it does sound like it was repeating mostly in the first chaper which was hard and rather boring for me to get through. Some pages are one sentence which saddens me as though she was just trying to make the book bigger or needed to fill a page.

I wish I could articulate what this book did for me as beautifully as Rupi articulated just about everything I've ever tried to get out of my head and onto paper. These poems made me and my best friends feel alive, and I could not have asked for them to come at a better time.

I finished Rupi Kaur's "The Sun and Her Flowers" a week ago and am still thinking, no feeling, the emotional impact of it. So many of her poems reflect my own personal life experiences. Fears I felt developing into a young woman to pursuing a male dominated profession to chasing after the beauty I saw portrayed in the media are present in Kaur's poetry. Kaur addresses painful women's issues but also offers solutions. I think this is an unforgettable, beautifully written and illustrated book of poetry that brings women together through their common life experiences. Every woman should read this book.

i can't count how many times I cried while reading this set of poetry. rupi kaur is a balm to the soul in trying times and I am thankful I picked this up. I can see why it was recommended to me. thank you for giving us all a window into your mind and heart rupi. you have reignited my passion for reading. I devoured this in under 3 hours. it is infinitely re-readable though and is now part of my home library collection.

The writer has an excellent skill with words, her ideas are brilliantly expressed. Alas, she is totally self-absorbed as all poems are about the joys and sorrows of her love/sex life. Apparently the rest of the world does not exist in her world. It get's old.

Beautiful book. To me what I have read is revolved around love and sounds like a heartbreak. Rupi Kaur you are a beautiful brilliant writer. The breakup and heartache poems (personally for me-about a loss of a connection of love between 2 people) are so damn hard for me to read. Even love poems are hard for me to read right now. So I thought it would be a tad different but one day I hope to pick up poems about heartache, love & not feel sick to my stomach. I look forward to getting through all of your beautiful book.

Although the poetry is nice, the book contains images that are sexually graphic in nature. I purchased this for a gift for my daughter and returned it because I did not find the artwork appropriate for her. There should be a warning because from my experience, this book is popular for even younger audiences.

Now this was a poetry collection I enjoyed. The growth shown through words I loved. The relationship depth and discussion was touching and easy to read. She discussed her relationship with her mother and some with immigration and I enjoyed the emotions shown. Really it’s just good and I liked it a lot.

Kaur is back and better than ever with this second collection! I thought Milk and Honey was just okay, but The Sun and Her Flowers meet all my expectations and then some. From immigrant parents to self care she has stunned me, and I’ve dogeared so many poems!

This very powerful book has the most beautifully simple yet vulnerable poems that track Rupi's journey of hurt and healing. Here's my favorite:

“The universe took its time on you
Crafted you to offer the world
Something different from everyone else
When you doubt
How you were created
You doubt an energy greater than us both
--irreplaceable”

Lots of young women need this book.

So thankful one of my college students introduced me to this amazing author. This author is frank in her discussion of what has happened to her, and who she is. But she is clear in that she is an overcomer--nothing that has happened to her will keep her from being the Best Version of Her.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This had me in tears at certain points. Rupi Kaur writes about such raw and sometimes taboo things in the most eloquent way. The vulnerability and strength that we see from her in this is inspiring.
I also really appreciate the attention to the details of the book itself. As with Milk and Honey, it's made of good quality paper, and the covers of both had unique textures that reflect the content well.

Sometimes you have to worry that a second book or album or movie won’t satisfy like the first. This is not the case for rupi kaur’s second book, it matches the first and does not disappoint in any way. You won’t be let down.

After reading a few of the poems, I thought "this is a lot more of 'Milk and Honey.'" But when I sat down and read it cover to cover..it was so gorgeous and moving. Some of them made me tear up. It's Milk and Honey evolved.

I'm a really big Rupi Kaur fan, to the extent that I have to defend her from the meme jokes my friends make about her writing. I will admit, there are poems in here that are, to put it politely, less than good, but there are pieces in here that were so powerful that they made me tear up. I will say that there are a lot more good poems in here than there were in Milk and Honey. She's improving, and I think it's worth it to support her art.

Rupi is a timeless, spot on, eloquent poet. I thought the sun and her flowers was just beautiful. It speaks of her roots, heartache, love, feminism, self hate and self love, and rising above hardships. Shes brilliant, and shes such a wonderful woman. Super friendly. I hope to meet her again one day. I look at her poetry like medicine for the soul, and whenever she publishes a new book, she knows exactly what i need to hear. At the time she wrote milk and honey, i needed to hear those poems, and now, a couple years later, i needed to hear her songs of the sun and her flowers.

Sorry to say, I was expecting more mature poetry. This seemed to me like something a hormonal teen would write. Subject of poems pretty immature point of view. That's just my opinion, as a middle-aged person, so if you're younger, like 15 or so, it may be a 5-star for you. I wish the author well in her growth.

This is my first time I read Rubi Kaur . The sun and her flowers is a beautiful poetry collection. So, I like many parts of her work especially her drawing \ illustrations . Furthermore, some stanza is profound and depict love as a flower life-cycle . It's good in general but I think Kaur can write better than what she writes here. Also. I picked up her first book milk and honey and I will read it soon.

I ordered The Sun and Her Flowers and Milk and Honey as gifts based on a request and reviews. After reading both, I decided they were not suitable for the adolescents they were intended for. Despite the many positive reviews and my love of poetry, I just wasn't neutral, I found some of her views troubling.

This is only the second poetry book I've ever bought, let alone read and wow was I amazed by it.
I loved that the fact that the poems are grouped together.
- Wilting is about heart break and sadness and confusion.
- Falling is dark. Its about depression and self-hate and there's mentions of rape.
- Rooting is about self-identity for the most part. Rupi speaks about immigration for a majority of this portion and also about her lineage and culture.
- Rising is about self-love and self-motivation; basically reevaluating life and trying to see the world in a positive perspective.
- Blooming is about continuing that self-love and positivity and passing it down to the next generation. There's a lot about women and the legacy of women and advice for future generations.

When I found out my copy of The Sun and Her Flowers came home, I braced myself and set the mood where I just want to be alone with this book. I never felt like I could relate so much to this book. It resonated with all of my emotions. Her poems were intimate yet so intense. It was because of her poetry that kept me from being broken.

Her first book Milk and Honey was so amazing there wasn’t a choice in getting this. I HAD TO!

And I’m so glad I did. I keep it as a bathroom book because I love reading it slowly. This can’t be rushed. It needs to be read in a way that you leave one poem contemplating life.

Great book. Rupi Kaye needs to do a NYC book tour.

Seriously the store?

I don’t know what all goes into product quality control, but I’m also not in charge of a multi-billion dollar corporation. This is ridiculous.

I saw this book at Barnes & Noble one afternoon and decided I wanted to buy it, but knew I could probably find a deal on the store, so ordered it here instead. What I received is very clearly some kind of counterfeit copy, as if someone poorly scanned the entire book and printed it cheaply somewhere else.

Firstly, I remember holding the book in Barnes & Noble and it very clearly had a textured cover. This one is smooth. The book in the store was around 4x6 inches. This was at least 5x7, maybe bigger. Perhaps the most damning evidence was the fact that it was so poorly printed. If you know anything about digital imaging, it looks as if the cover was scanned in at like 25 ppi, as opposed to the industry standard of 240-300. The pages were offset as well. The author’s name does not appear at the top, instead the poems are aligned with the top of the page which is not only incorrect, but displeasing to the eye.

TL;DR - just buy a physical copy at a bookstore so you can be sure you’re getting the real thing, because what I got was clearly a counterfeit in every way.

This book is one of my greatest regrets. In a rush to get my son (13 yrs old) a book on poetry (with great reviews) for a school report, I purchased it without reading other parent’s reviews. This book is way too graphic with sexual encounters for young readers. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch this until he had already read it.

I thought that I would love this little book ... but I did not. I know that some folks do love it ... and will love it ... but it wasn't what I expected, based on reviews.

There were, most assuredly, a few gems that reached my heart and soul, but overall I found it to be a bit dreary.

I did like the format!

Should say in description that this book is for adults only! I bought for my mom to give to my niece for Christmas and thankfully I flipped through the book before handing it over. Definitely inappropriate for anyone under the age of 18! Even some of the illustrations were way to suggestive and erotic for youth! Needless to say we returned along with her other book Milk and Honey. Very disappointed that there isn’t a more accurate description!

This reads like a 7th grader's diary. Honestly, this actually is my diary from middle school and I could probably have written it. I just don't really see what all the hype is over Rupi Kuar, there are so many talented poets and writers in the world that have existed through time..... I get the whole "micro-poetry" thing is hip and trendy, but seriously how much risk did this author put into her creative work? For millennials to consider the singular phrase "together we are an endless conversation" next to an elementary sketch of a phonograph printed on a single page as beautifully written or artistic is just totally embarrassing. Vomit. To be completely honest I bought this book just so I could read it out loud and laugh at how pathetic it is over a glass of wine, or 5.

This author keeps on making me feel mixed feelings about her poetry, some I found cheap, some other sentences are really beautiful....

Questa autrice continua a scrivere libri che mi lasciano piuttosto perplessa perché alcune poesie sono veramente schifezze che ho letto anche sui miei diari delle scuole medie, mentre altre frasi sono veramente molto belle e toccanti....

Bought this as a gift for my mom. Probably the first time I've seen her cry so openly because of something she read.
She carried it around with her everywhere and dog-eared so many of the pages, and this is a woman who never particularly cared for poetry. English isn't my mom's first language, but she was still moved by many of the poems. There are people who don't like Rupi Kaur's writing style, but I think its simplicity and brevity made it easy for my mom to understand the meaning of the poems and connect to them.
I subsequently bought Milk and Honey for her, which she also liked, but she enjoyed the Sun and her Flowers more; she felt that Milk and Honey was more for "younger people" (my mom is in her 50s).

Beautiful book. The flow, the language, the feelings. Spoke to my heart. One of the best I have read. I love this book. Got through it in an afternoon but had to read it all over again. It's a book you want to have close by so you could read pieces of it again and again. Rupi Kaur is truly gifted. For someone so young she has the wisdom of someone way beyond her years.

I found this on the shelf at Urban Outfitters and I read this in about 10 min. I made a wise choice- Not buying. This is not poetry. It is pseudo self help nonsense and reads like random thoughts a teenager would pass off as wisdom. It lacks depth, craft, and thoughtfulness.

Rupi Kaur is my favorite author right now. I have been lucky enough to see her perform and I must say, she brings the work to life. If you can see her live I would very politely insist that you do. Strong, thoughtful and beautiful writing will inspire you when you're down and enlighten you when you're feeling good. Rupi is a force of nature and she's helping us all through this thing we like to call "life." Thank you Rupi.

This is the second collection of free verse (with some prose) poetry and line drawn art by Rupi Kaur, an ethnically Indian Canadian poet. Like the first collection, “Milk and Honey,” this collection has been well received critically. The strengths of the collection include some beautiful, evocative, and unique use of language; the author’s willingness to lay it all on the line in a bold and brave fashion; and the often clever--if simple, verging on crude—artwork. Its greatest weakness is frequent restatement of clichéd notions and truisms that don’t stand up well juxtaposed to the more personal and illuminating lines.

The collection is divided into five parts, each of them reflecting a theme—while being tied together by the titular floral theme. “Wilting” is about breakups. This flows smoothly in tone into the second part, “Falling,” which is about sexual violence, depression, and the linkage between them. “Rooting” is about family and origins, and—in particular—the poet’s relationship with her mother. As an immigrant child who moved to Canada from Punjab while young, Kaur was more atuned to her new home than her parents—who were less at ease with their adopted homeland and more rooted to their ancestral home. The penultimate part, “Rising” is about love and relationships, and it takes the collection into brighter territory. “Blooming” is about feeling comfortable within one’s own skin, and—in particular—the female experience of it.

As hinted, the overall organization of the collection seems purposeful and intriguing. The two melancholy parts at the beginning are blended into the last two (more optimistic) parts by way of a chapter on roots and family. This bridging seems to be done on purpose to make a statement.

I enjoyed this collection, and would highly recommend it for poetry readers—particularly for those who enjoy free verse. For the more delicate readers, one should note there are adult themes in both the poems and the art.

I actually picked this book up at Target, I opened it and the poem I read almost had me in tears. I instantly put it in my cart. I recently went through a devastating breakup, and the poem I read resonated with me at a heart and soul level. Once I got home I instantly started reading. I'm glad I waited until we got home, I'm only about 30 pages in and haven't had a dry eye for a single page. It's like she's writing exactly what I'm feeling and thinking!

Rupi’s voice is strong yet gentle and flowing. The Sun and Her Flowers is a graceful venture into what it is to be a woman. More of the same. Poetry that isn't really poetry but caters to the masses taking universal themes and words of others changed up a bit, nothing that would challenge one to critically think, in other words it's a bestseller.

I purchased this book to help me cope with the process of watching my friend die. I was heartbroken and hurting, and this book gave me nothing but love and self realizations. I lpve her style, and absolutely recommend this to my friends along with anyone else who asks.

Love Love LOVE this book. Everything looks beautiful from the writing to the illustrations. I feel like some of the poems are a personalized letter to me. I loved Milk and Honey, and sometimes when she's writing peoms, I feel like she's writing them for me. How many women can literally relate to the abuse, trauma, hardship, and after affects of life that beautifully portrays for us. After reading a few of them, I could cry because it's nice to know, that I'm not alone. I'll be praying for my sisters.

I really liked Milk and Honey so I was looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, on a whole I was disappointed by The Sun and Her Flowers; many of the pieces felt like reworded sentences from Milk and Honey, and I didn't feel as much of an emotional impact reading this one. A few pieces did stand out to me, however: the chapter "Rooting" is almost entirely about immigration, and the poem "Broken English" in particular is exceptionally good. Overall though -- I'm not loving this one.

Sexually explicit poems and drawings not suitable for the 80 year-old woman we purchased it for. Should have read more than just the back cover. Otherwise, I'm sure it's a lovely book! One star because it costs almost as much to return it as it was to purchase.

Don't get me wrong. I love Rupi Kaur. I found this collection a bit dry, however. Many of the poems are a bit lacking in creativity. Kaur, nonetheless, has a very elegant style and reading through the poems was still a joy. I think, however, a little more though or words could go into some of her pieces. All in all, it's a beautiful book that I enjoy picking up every now and then to read a random poem or two. Simply not my favorite, but perhaps I'm not a huge fan of the Instagram-style poetry that's been popping up these days.

I really enjoyed her first book so I preordered two in advance and gifted one to a friend. My friend already finished reading it and has recommended it to their friends. To me, I think that she sticks true to her writing style and I thoroughly enjoy the deep messages conveyed in a succinct medium such as poetry. There is a fantastic progression that unites many of the poems by theme and I thought this idea was very thoughtful. I would recommend this as a gift to anyone, especially college students and young adults. The messages in the poetry also resonate with many young adults but I will spare readers those themes as I do not want to spoil content.

I really liked the way that Rupi Kaur was able to transform from her mostly love novels to a novel that spoke so highly of her ancestry. This book is one her best from the two. It is a much longer read but every poem is worth it. There are poems that have different metaphors that help make this book so unique and intriguing. The sun and her flowers is a good read for anyone despite gender. Rupi has really made her poetry in this book well- known and her performances of these poems are very powerful and emotional. I would recommend this easy lovely read to anyone.

I was enchanted by Rupi Kaur's previous book Milk and Honey, it was written in a style I enjoyed and had read Nayyirah Waheed's book Salt. previously. I thought Milk and Honey had a similar style to the Salt author, not as powerful or deep as Waheed's work but it also had some beautiful poetry that was very accessible. I read :the sun and her flowers, in one sitting, and was left wanting more.

The book is divided into 5 sections based on the poetry:
“this is the recipe of life
said my mother
as she held me in her arms as i wept
think of those flowers you plant
in the garden each year
they will teach you
that people too
must wilt
fall
root
rise
in order to bloom.”

So the sections are Wilting, Falling, Rooting, Rising and Blooming. The poetry is short and very accessible like her previous work, but I found it a bit too cliched. Some verses felt like a teenager had written them, they did not have the spiritual depth I was seeking. It seemed like something is missing compared to her previous work. This work shows the angst and the turmoil of the stages of a relationship but leaves me wanting something beyond a man woman relationship. I identified with her poetry, but it's not the type that makes me think about it days afterwards and discover yet new meaning in the phrases.

Poetry can be very personal, and I was not as enamored by this book, but it is still an accessible and easy work to read.

I usually associate poetry with this endless tomes we used to have to read in school. And then analyze. I was never taught to love it for its beautiful words and find my own meaning in it. But coming across The Sun and Her Flowers opened me up to that form of expression and I will not only seek out this author's other work but that of different poets as well.

Just as beautifully written as her first book. It's brutally honest yet really empowering as a woman. Each word felt like it was picked on purpose and strategically placed in each spot. You can tell a lot of work went into this collection and I'm really impressed with how it turned out. I loved how the collection was sectioned off and how it got stronger and more powerful by the end.

From start to finish this book moved me. The power, the imagery, the emotion found in the words left them imprinted in my mind. I would like to break my review down a little and list some of the pieces that really hit me hardest, but that will have to wait until I'm not on mobile. I can't wait to read her first book of poems.

3.5 I'll repeat what I said it my review of the first one, I always have a difficult time rating and reviewing poetry because it's so personal. It's like judging someone for them opening up to you.

I did enjoy this one, but just not as much as the first. Because unread the books back to back I did notice there were some repeated lines.

Beautifully written in a manner few could accomplish. Filled with amazing imagery and emotion. Really grabs a hold of the cycles life takes us through and humanity we all share. Every word touches my soul and screamed to be read out loud over and over.

Like most books of poetry, this one was kind of hit and miss for me. A lot of the poems really resonated with me but there were also several that were one or two lines long and felt more like a random 3 a.m. thought disguised as a poem.

An eloquent piece of poetry that resonates so deeply with the emotions and challenges most women/people go through. I have yet to come across a line or stanza that hasn’t received snaps, cheers, or nods from me.

Rupi’s voice is strong yet gentle and flowing. The Sun and Her Flowers is a graceful venture into what it is to be a woman. Rupi paints a vivid future where competition among women is a thing of the past. A future where women boldly build each other up and stand proudly in the sun. I highly recommend a visit to this garden.

I just saw her live in Kansas City and it was a simply sublime experience. I became a Rupi Kaur fan. Her writing is real, encouraging, and just simply exquisite. I read the book in one sitting. Inspired me to write again

Her poetry is simple but holds so much power. The imagery and tone make you relate to the narrator even of you've never personally experienced some of the events. It's almost like missing a life you've never lived.

There were several pieces in this book that would warrant publication in a journal or magazine, but to create a whole book of one-line drudgery that is impossibly underwhelming - ("I long to be a Lily pad") - is nothing sorry of arrogant. A perfect example of the self-serving pretentiousness that a world of social media affords. This book is certainly not worth reading in its entirety. It's a published Tumblr blog and I have already forgotten it.

One of the most intimate collections of poetry now gracing my shelf. I am particularly fond of the verse

"I am
made of water
of course I am emotional."

it highlights the entire collection entirely too well. Excellent read for anyone in recovery from trauma.

More of the same. Poetry that isn't really poetry but caters to the masses taking universal themes and words of others changed up a bit, nothing that would challenge one to critically think, in other words it's a bestseller.
