Our favorite go-to resource for a fast and healthy meal! "Fast Food, Good Food" is EASILY is easily the best cookbook on our entire shelf. Here is why:
1. The recipes are easy, with clear, numbered instructions. A few of the soups require blending; the recipes often call for an immersion blender, but I threw them in my handy-dandy upright blender and voila! Creamy, blended soup! Basically, every recipe is doable with a basic kitchen, although you may have to tweak a few things here and there (i.e. not everyone has an immersion blender or dutch oven, but nor are those items critical to the success of the recipes).
2. The recipes are actually fast, usually between 20 and 60 min, including prep time.
3. No weird or crazy expensive ingredients. I've been able to find everything at our Sprouts grocery store. Probably the most unusual things I've bought are Zatar spice blend, an Asian pear (but in retrospect, any pear would do), and ground bison. These were the very odd items, so fear not.
4. The ingredients cover the entire spectrum of seasonal produce. No matter what time of year, there are recipes that feature each season's best fruits and veggies.
5. The book itself is beautiful, will full page color photos. Because everybody loves pretty pictures.
6. Most importantly, the recipes are DELICIOUS. We're tried many of the soups and salads recipes, and loved them all. We've also tried some of the meat and seafood dishes. Meat and seafood is now a "splurge" for us, and we enjoy it only a few days a week. So it is a testament to our trust in this book that we'd cook our precious meat ration from one of these recipes. Here are some of our favorites:
- Kale Salad 2/ Orange and Pistachio (p. 90) - probably our favorite salad EVER. We make this at least once a week nowadays. The spicy citrus dressing is delicious on the kale, and the pistachios and dates pull the whole thing together. This book is worth buying just for this recipe!
- Shredded Brussels Sprouts w/ Lemon Caper dresser - another salad winner, which my BF loves. We eat it as a salad one day, and use the leftovers for a slaw the next.
- Five-Spice Winter Squash Soup (p. 45) - a very easy blended soup, which tastes great on a cold winter night.
- Yam and Peanut Soup (p. 78) - very much a North African style soup, with a spicy kick. My BF enjoys spicy food, and he loved this one! This is another good one for a cold winter night.
- Quick Bison Bolognese (p. 206) - Honest to God, this was one of the best things we have EVER eaten. I can't rave enough about it. We chose this for a romantic dinner, and it did not disappoint. Want to impress someone, but can't slave in the kitchen all day? This is for you!
- Za'atar Crusted Chicken Paillard (p. 175) - This recipe was stupid easy. I think it took less than 10 min. It's just pan-seared chicken with a tasty spice-blend crust. But boy howdy, was it delicious! I had to go to a spice store to buy Zatar spice blend, but you can also find it online or make it yourself easily. The extra effort to locate Zatar was well worth it, because we'll be making this again. Plus that trip to the spice store was actually super fun.

Not practical -- too many ingredients that would be hard to find if you don't live in a big city with large and/or specialty grocery stores. Also, heavy reliance on oriental flavorings and spices that don't appeal to many of us. Finally, not "fast food" in my book -- too many recipes with more than five ingredients :-)

I was thrilled to see that Andrew Weil has produced a cookbook which is characteristic of the practical advice that he gives. After a long day at work, I am always looking for easy way to make healthy and flavorful meals. Weil’s book is the solution. In the internet age, I look for a book that can be my “go to.” With many, not just the usual two or three recipes,” that I would cook, this book has been added to my cookbook shelf…. I am choosing between the Tuscan bean soup with Farro and Swiss Chard and the Vegetable minestrone with Qunoa for tonight.

I bought this book because I had really enjoyed True Food, but some of the recipes are too simple to be useful, such as guacamole, roasted asparagus and steamed sugar snap peas. I know it's fast food, but those are not really recipes. There are also errors that make it feel like it was thrown together to cash in on the True Food success. On the other hand, it was only 13 bucks and some new and interesting things, hence the 3 stars.

Andy Weil once again has created a book that marries his incredible wisdom with mouthwatering recipes. His passion for food and what comprises a healthy diet is reflected in every one of his creations. This book is a must have for anyone who wants to connect with food and create nutritious and delicious recipes. Dr. Weil is truly the only MD that I trust when it comes to culinary medicine; he is a true pioneer.

Reading some of the reviews ahead of purchasing the book, I have to say I will add it to my collection. If you are open to an alternative way of eating that includes nutrient dense foods, alternate ways of preparing food that reduces the fats and sugars our taste buds grew up then with I think Dr Weil's book will help you get there. If you are against giving up mayo for nutrious yogurt and complain because the blue cheese dressing is not rich enough you are at the beginning of the process of changing your old habits, it may not happen overnight but stick with it, it will happen.

I absolutely wasted $20+ on this book. While I saw him on Dr. Oz, which should have been my first indication, I have read some of his other books and they weren't too bad. This book, was a disappointment for someone in a rural community, or too far from a health food store. I am pleasantly pleased to say, it has been hauled to the dump. I went through my cupboards and refrigerator, got rid of everything that was unhealthy, (like you should do if you're going to TRY to eat better), but this guy is all about Asian cuisine clearly. Good for him, but bad for anyone trying to make any of the recipes, or if you live too far from a health food store that carries the particular items suggested on the shopping list. Not to mention, $800 later, I came out with items that didn't keep well, and had to be tossed anyway. Sake? While not a hard liquor to obtain usually, I found that I had gone to 3 different places to get it, and all were out, or didn't carry it in the first place in a City of over $200,000 people, and an ample amount of liquor stores! But that wasn't the biggest issue I had with this book, it was the preparations, which seemed so simple when viewed on TV, but then in TV land, there is a staff of people backstage who were there cutting, dicing, juicing, or whatever needed done for the segment. Where are those people when I need them? Nonetheless, I was ok with doing it myself, it was just that the recipes didn't taste like anything other than Asian. Maybe they're healthy, but you can buy recipe books to make healthy meals from that doesn't require you to drive 80 miles to find the ingredients, or stop at numerous places to get them. Big thumbs down Dr. Weil. Sadly disappointed in this book.

This gorgeous book is full of fast and easy innovative recipes that focus on fresh produce and other healthy ingredients. I especially like the salad chapter, with recipes like Cabbage Slaw with Ginger-Curry Vinaigrette and Toasted Cashews. I am eager to work my way through them all. The quality of the book is five stars, as well as the photography. It's a perfect holiday gift!

What a disappointment. No nutritional values given for the recipes. When reviewing the recipes it seems that low calorie and healthy are not used in combination. Additionally, it does not seem that they are as quick to prepare as suggested when the author was on the Dr. Oz show. The effort in producing this cookbook seems to be directed to beautiful photography, which it has and that is about all it has to offer. Save your money and do not buy this book.

I saw this book yesterday at Costco and flipped through it. I was instantly drawn by the beautiful photography. There are a lot of really delicious sounding recipes in this book. I haven't yet made any, but many catch my eye and I'm making a list of the ones I'd like to try. He makes use of a lot of fresh vegetables and seasonings and thankfully, he does offer a meat chapter. I'm not a vegetarian and while I appreciate many vegetarian dishes, I also appreciate that he's not pushing that agenda here. But there are PLENTY of vegetarian and vegan recipes as well! And also ways to modify some to make them vegetarian. Or example, in one recipe he suggests using either tofu or chicken in the dish. That's one of the dishes that looks delicious! It's a noodle dish with lots of flavor components. Many dishes use Asian components and flavorings, which I like. I will update once I've tried a few recipes.

The recipes are not practical or affordable for someone on a budget. Most of the recipes have too many ingredients or hard to find specialty ingredients. It is probably a good book for someone who is a skillful cook and can afford to buy lots of ingredients. Some of the recipes have a lot of steps so it is not exactly fast food.

Gorgeous cookbook! The recipes are simple and classic, inventive and fresh. The pantry essentials section is the best I've seen, and the dishes cover a great range from basic weeknight to impressive show-stoppers fit for a dinner party.
