I bought this book to help plan mineral collecting trips when visiting AZ. The color coded trail ratings are very helpful for my planning as I am more interested in getting to my destination than challenging my vehicle. I have not yet used the book but am looking forward to putting it to good this winter. From what I have seen thus far I highly recommend it!

Well made with laminated pages spiral bound. Durable and easy for handling in less than sterile conditions. Tons of info on each listing. A lot of time and effort went into this book.
Rated only a three due to accuracy of rating difficulty of trails. Already being familiar with certain areas I find some noticeably inaccurate. Realizing ratings are subjective and road/trail conditions change, the differences observed makes me skeptical of ratings on trails I have not yet traveled.
It still is about the best reference available. I guess a solution is to over prepare for any situation, anticipate worst than advertised conditions and never, ever go alone.

I just received my copy of Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails (second edition) by Charles Wells that I purchased as a gift. I have other guide books by the author including ones for Colorado,Utah and an older version of Arizona that are very informative. I cannot report on the contents of the new book but I expect it to be as good as all the others. The new book feel cheap in hand and the spiral part does not allow the book to lay flat or to be folded back on itself. I also noticed that it was printed in China. While the quality of the material used is poor,it still is an excellent choice for the back country explorer.

well written - like difficulty ratings. book itself looks sturdy - like the spiral style - should hold up to rough treatment "on the trail". would have gone fire stars but was disappointed that there wasn't much discussion of trails in my area - Prescott.

Five year old edition. Tends toward harder jeep drives rather than small ATV/UTV drives. Does not cover all of Arizona only 100 trails in 7 areas.
I planned to return it but thankfully I found someone with a jeep to take it off my hands
