I had a problem with the protagonists in this book. They where kept alive way too long just to further the plot and truly where not on the same level as those in earlier books. The exception to this was the Cave Troll. Over all still really enjoyed the book but felt there where a few too many plot lines that just did not work out. Once again it is still worth reading but could have been better. Looking forward to the next book but hope Steve comes up with some truly worthy Bad Asses.

I really enjoyed the two first books and the third is even better. The narrative is a great mix between past and present, which help us see some of nates life before "we get to know him" so to speak. You see nate continue to grow and learn about himself and his abilities while we explore more of this great world within a world Steve have created. While its common for authors to "borrow" from mythology, steve combines the mythology and its myths with his story perfectly.

This is one of the few series in the genre where i cant wait to get my hands on the next book, steve if you want a norwegian beta reader for the next book, i would love to be of assistance :)

Keep up the good work

Great book. Steve McHugh now has made 3 incredible books. This one keeps you interested until the end and has enough twists and turns that staying on your toes may not be enough. One thing I absolutely love about the Helequin Chronicles series is that each iteration is a stand alone story in and of itself while each also play off one another well enough that it compels readers to become interested in the series as a whole. Well done and I would recommend this book to anyone.
Prison of Hope (The Hellequin Chronicles Book 4) :: Lies Ripped Open (The Hellequin Chronicles Book 5) :: Promise of Wrath (The Hellequin Chronicles Book 6) :: Born of Hatred (The Hellequin Chronicles Book 2) :: Z for Zachariah (New Windmills) by Robert C. O'Brien (1976-10-25)

While I was initially dubious about this series, I enjoyed the first book and have found them to be improving as McHugh gains greater knowledge of and confidence in his characters. The hero is both highly powerful and yet often self-deprecating; it is an appealing mix. It is a very entraining example of the genre; I am looking forward to the fourth book and hope that there are many more to come.

Once again Steve McHugh delivers another fantastic story of Nathan Garrett aka Hellequin. This particular story was a bit more of a detective story than I remember the first 2, but it was a welcome addition to Mate's skill set. I appreciate the fact that although Garrett's powers are growing, McHugh has restrained himself from making Nathan unstoppable like in some other series (ie The Demon Accords). I did find it odd the Nate's personality was a little more abrasive than we have seen in the past, but given the personal events he's involved in, I guess I can't blame him. If you enjoyed the first 2 books you'll enjoy this one. Another fun addition to the series and I can't wait for the next one.

Hellequin just pulls you in. I preordered this whenit was announced read it the day it was released. Great characters, lots of depth to them and to the storyline. A great back history is built up also so each characters actions and motives can be better understood.

Read this series, you won't regret it.

The third installment takes us into one of many parallel realms, as a device for developing the plot and setting up future adventures, The thick plottens, as some super-villainous players get hinted at (some twisted Avalon figure pushing the Vanguard idea, maybe Merlin?), as a foundation for the next book.

If you liked the first two enough to read reviews for book three, you should probably just go ahead and buy it. The story is fairly entertaining, the world building is still imaginative (if a little confused), and the main character (Nathan?) is still entirely too powerful for there to be much suspense.

All my criticisms aside, I've read the first three books, and I'll probably read the next one at some point.

McHugh has created a fascinating and complex universe which continues to grow and develop. Hellequin is the kind of character who is so loyal and operates with his own oddly admirable ethical code that it is possible to look past the carnage he creates and genuinely like him. I can't wait for more adventures.

I wish these books came out quicker. I know that's selfish, but it's true. If you've read the overview of this series and it's the type of story you like, read it. It's good mysteries, magics, and betrayals. 'Nuff said.

I really enjoy the Hellequin chronicles. The imagination and action mixed with humor keep me reading and sometimes laughing. I would however recommended a new copy editor, there are many typos in the kindle books that I sometimes find distracting.

I loved the first and second books of this series, but this book just isn't up to par. Has anyone noticed that he's basically a giant weakling through most, if not all of this book? This book has the mystery, the excitement, and most of all the character development of the other books, but it doesn't have the absolute awsomeness of a guy that used to be the boogeyman of avalon. Throughout this book he's nothing but a weak little sissy, book 2 says he could destroy a werewolf by himself, but in this one he runs away as fast as possible from a troll? It could have been much better than it is.

Loved the first 2 books and this one just continued the series in a fun and exciting way introducing new characters and storylines that I look forward to reading more about! Keep up the excellent work we appreciate it!

This series is universally a good read.
My only complaint is that the number of typographical errors seems to be increasing. It can't be that difficult to get an editor to read these books. The errors are very distracting.

Honestly I was a little bored at the beginning and a little in the middle, but then the story, the action and Nathan's use of magic got so awesome I couldn't read fast enough. I ended up really liking the book. highly recommend the series to my friends.

Several things can go wrong with a series, which doesn't happen here.

1. The books can just not be written as well as the first one or two: Nope, if anything, the quality of writing has gone up in this novel.

2. The books can be predictable: Nope, this is a whole new set of situations.

3. The books can lose track of their direction: Nope, this continues with a consistent tone and ideas.

4. The protagonist can become boring or suddenly change: Nope, Nate is pretty much the same. On the other hand, he does change and grow in the book.

Overall, a good continuation for this series. Why not 5 stars? This is great, fun reading, not heavy literature. Definitely recommended for a good read, but not likely to be taught in colleges a hundred years from now. (Of course, I could be wrong, in which case I will come back and correct this.)

I waited for this installment of The Hellequin Chronicles, Book 3. The series is so unlike me to read though I've been mesmerized with McHugh's writing about magic & weird characters. With modern day settings & mystical history, these long books have been very enjoyable. Going out in the dark at night though I find some scenes coming to light & think about what historic creatures could be there! I would like an HBO series!

Nate Garrett is ,without a doubt, the best character to appear in print in ages.He has excellent supporting cast around him, but Mate is just kick-ads.These books have been great, and waiting for the next one will keep me wanting more. GREAT JOB!!

If you have read the other books in the Hellequin Chronicles (& I'm assuming you probably have), this book is par for the course. It's another great story with the same minor issues as the others. I say "minor", though I know to some they are rather glaring so I will briefly mention them.

There are yet more glaring editorial issues, in fact it seemed almost worse in this one, which made it a bit difficult for me follow at some points. That is coming from someone who doesn't usually care about issues like that. There are a few plot discrepancies, but I'm not sure too many people would notice or even care. It certainly didn't ruin the book for me, it was just something I noticed in passing. With all that being said, the story itself was still fabulous & I enjoyed it immensely.

I particularly enjoy the ongoing storyline with Nate's glyphs, or whatever they are, slowly disappearing, releasing more power & new abilities in the process. Although the fact that he can lose the abilities we've already come to know & expect was a bit jarring. All worth it in the end I suppose.

I realize I've spent a lot of time in the negative, only because I think you should let these things be known in a review. Others may not find them as minor as I did. Yet let me assure you, I loved every moment of this book & have NO regrets about buying it. I will absolutely continue to follow this series.

This series is well written, with a sense for detail (without overdoing it). Captivating and well planned story lines, with a knack of doing something unexpected. Hellequin has his heart in the right place in a world that keeps trying to crush it, and him.

Superb.

The author uses multiple time lines to tie stories together with finesse. The continued development of the Hellequin backstory has been great. Tick tock Mchugh, we need the 4th book soon. Seriously though, buy them all fast before Steve realizes he is selling great fiction for way too cheap.
