I don't have any other cookbook that tells stories along the way. I think that's my favorite part about this book. You really feel like Rachel is sharing her family's recipes with you - WHICH SHE IS! Love it!

I think everything Rachel Hollis touches is straight GOLD! This cookbook is awesome. If I can make these recipes and impress my family, anyone can. They are delicious and easy, perfect for this busy family of 5. She has taken all the guess work out with everything written clearly and concise. I have had the book two weeks and have already made the hot pockets, spaghetti carbonara, simple baked chicken, cilantro lime rice, garlic smashed potatoes, meat loaf meatballs, the tuna melts, and several of the spice mixes. Everything has come out WONDERFUL! (no crazy ingredients that are hard to find either ?)

We are just getting started cooking from Rachel’s newest cookbook. So far, the Spicy Beef Enchilada Soup is SOO good! My family loves it! The layout is so nice as well, I love that the ingredients, the timeline and how-to are all on one page with a big color picture to the left. Makes it so easy to have on the counter and not need to “thumb through” multiple pages as you are trying to cook. I love that the ingredients are all “common” and easy to find in the grocery store as well. Busy mamas don’t have time for fancy. We just want to cook easy, yummy and healthy options on the quick without the fuss! As always, Rachel’s commentary is spot on and so relatable! Need to make sure this one doesn’t get stolen by friends and fam who visit our kitchen!! Lol!

I made the Hawaiian Chicken and Barbacoa Tacos... and y'all. It was so good. They were super easy to prep ahead of time and throw in the slow cooker. Delicious. And can we talk about how beautifully laid out this book is? The photo's themselves are beautiful and the layout is so gorgeous plus easy to follow. This stays on my counter displayed in a cookbook stand and opened to whatever recipe I'm making for the day/week. Love it and makes me drool every time I walk by and see whatever recipe I'm displaying at the time! If you need easy to make, easy to prep, easy all the way around but also DELISH... this is your book. Plus, Rachel is just too funny and I enjoy the opening page to each recipe often talking about why she chose a recipe or what it reminds her of. It adds such a fun personal touch. This is definitely a go to for our house and should become yours, too!

I watched her presentation on QVC and thought I would like this cookbook for quick meals. I suppose if you follow Rachel on social media and are an absolute beginner cook then by all means this cookbook is for you.

I personally found 16 pages of a memoir type of introduction not necessary for a cookbook. As a collector of cookbooks I'm buying recipes not memoirs and life coaching on table manners using another five pages?.

In review of the cookbook I found the recipes uninspiring and most recipes are available elsewhere on the internet, with slight changes in the name of the recipe or ingredients but common recipes overall. The Street Corn Salad is the same as Mexican Corn Salad, Foil Wrapped Halibut on the grill, is the same as 100's of foil/fish/meat grill dinners. Canned biscuit pizza's are far from original.

I surmised that this was far from gourmet from her promotion on QVC where it presented recipes that looked as quick, simple and unique. the book offers quick and simple but far from unique. Expensive recipe book to be so disappointed.

I will buy anything Rachel Hollis writes. I can’t get enough of her content! I can’t even cook and I bought this cookbook for myself and a friend as soon as it came out and I have to tell you, I made the Italian Chopped Salad for a party and for the first time in my 31 years on this earth, I heard two people say.. “Who made this salad?” And they meant it in a good way! :) My heart soared because I can barely boil water. As a busy working mom who struggles every night with what to put on the table because I dread cooking, these recipes are simple and delicious!

Thank you Rachel for this book and your strong voice that encourages me every day.

Love this book! I’m constantly trying to find new recipes that will make both my husband and I but also our two young boys happy, and Rachel kills it with this cookbook! I’ve tried so many cookbooks in the past which are clearly not written by someone who is a mom or feeds their kids themselves so it was very refreshing to learn all of Rachel’s recipes that she makes for her family’ i’ve tried so many cookbooks in the past which are clearly not written by someone who is a mom or feeds their kids themselves so it was very refreshing to learn all of Rachel’s recipes that she makes for her family.

Holy guacamole!!! I freaking LOVE this cookbook!! In my adult life so far, I have been gifted really gorgeous cookbooks, but I mainly just keep them to look pretty on my shelf. This one is not only PRETTY & beautifully laid out, but incredibly SIMPLE & reminds me that I actually CAN cook & that it doesn’t have to be super complex! We don’t have kiddos yet, but between my fiancé & I and our busy work schedules, we need a lot of quick, easy & no-brained recipes. This hits the spot & Rachel’s “best friend next door” way of writing literally feeds my soul. You, your mama, & all your friends NEED this cookbook! It’s my new kitchen staple. Thank you, Rachel!

I read “Girl, Wash your Face”-loved it! and I knew Rachel had a cookbook coming out soon. I don’t buy many cookbooks anymore but when I saw others posting pictures and a Rachel cooking through a few it was a no brainer! Italian grilled chicken is now a staple in our house because my grilled chicken hating husband looooves it!

Rachel Hollis has done it again!! Her first cookbook was adorable and full of great recipes, & this one didn’t disappoint. I’ve cooked a few of the dishes in here so far, & the family has not left even the tiniest bit over. The favorite has been the Cowboy Steak Salad so far. All my meat & potato loving men in the family raves over this salad! The format is so user friendly - short & sweet directions, beautiful photos to show each step of the process, & an incredibly handy time guide on the side so you can make a quick decision on what to make based on the time you have to cook. One of my favorite parts was the introduction where Rachel provided her kitchen staples, as well as the dinner time rules she keeps at her house. The content is flawless, the pictures are stunning, & Rachel has just knocked it out of the park once again. 5 stars for sure!!

There is nothing earth shattering about this cookbook. Nothing tastes fantastic - it's all very, very basic. Like her recipes for toast. I was hoping for some unique things to make but didn't find anything.

Real Life Dinners by Rachel Hollis is a good book for a busy mom as the recipes concentrate on quick fixes for those busy days when time is at a premium.
I like that, besides the basics, there are Kid-Friendly Dinners, Make-Ahead Dinners, Soup for Dinner and Salad for Dinner plus more. The chapter on Table Manners is excellent, as are the photos. All the recipes have simple ingredients you probably have in your pantry, so this is a plus for the busy homemaker who just needs to get a fresh, tasty meal on the table…and fast.
I wanted to like Real Life Dinners more than I did, however, many of the recipes had prepared ingredients I choose not to use. Call me a food snob, but I don’t have a pantry filled with prepared salad dressings, most of which contain canola oil, pre-made pie crusts, high lectin beans, frozen ravioli, and other preservative-laden foods.

Are you a busy spouse, parent, single person? Do you find that you run through the drive-through on your way home from work because you don't have any ideas what to cook for dinner or are too dog tired to cook? Or maybe your nights are as busy as your days and you JUST CAN'T handle one more responsibility?

Okay, yes, that may be dramatic but come on, tell me you haven't felt one of those things a time or two?

Real Life Dinners may not be the answer to the world's problems but it was the answer to my families, "What's for dinner?" "AGAIN?" "Can I have a grilled cheese instead?" questions. I found the cookbook easy to follow, the recipes full of flavor and now have a few new "standbys".

Some dinner favorites were Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork, Garlic Herbed Smashed Potatoes, Zesty Italian Chicken, and Lemon Pesto Chicken.

I learned I'm a terrible recipe follower - and yet the recipes still came out great! For instance, with the Lemon Pesto Chicken, the adage that less is more is 100% correct! I doubled the recipe because I have teenagers and a husband who thinks he still needs to eat like one. I had two jars of pesto and added both. I didn't measure, because come on, it's PESTO. But here, you can have too much of a good thing and it was very strong. BUT I adapted and cooked up some pasta to serve with it, VOILA, problem solved!

Also, I didn't have 24 hours to marinate the chicken for the Zesty Italian Chicken because my chicken didn't thaw in time. It only got about 45 minutes of marinating time (while I prepared the Garlic Herbed Smashed Potatoes). While the chicken was still good, I can only imagine how flavorful it would have been with 24 hours to marinate!

I can't forget to mention that as a mom, I loved the Freeze-Ahead Breakfast Burritos and Freeze-Ahead Breakfast Sandwiches. My husband grabbed a few of these to warm up at work and my son ate them BEFORE SCHOOL! I now have a freezer full of home-made breakfast foods.

These aren't fancy meals that take a long time to prepare. These are everyday meals that taste good and are easy to make!

I was provided a review copy by the publisher. This did not influence my opinion of the book nor my review.

I like that Rachel’s recipes are not complicated and meals that my family will eat. I have a large family and young kids. So I can’t be stuck at the stove for too long without the kids needing something. Most of her recipes (excluding the soups and casseroles which have longer cook times) say they take about 25 mins for prep and cook time. Which is just what I need. Naturally they take me a little longer than their estimate for prep. I’ve found all of the recipes I’ve made so far, easy to follow and make.

I’ve never read Rachel’s blog before so I wasn’t familiar with her. But reading her cook book, I like her voice. She does an introduction for each chapter and I felt like I could connect with her. I like how she laid out her chapters and the recipes in them. This includes breakfast for dinner, kid friendly dinners, make ahead dinners, salad for dinner, soup for dinner, etc. Since the book is entirely dinner recipes these chapter break downs make it easy to find what your looking for.

I love to cook. Not necessarily every day, but it’s something I enjoy. The kitchen is the heart of my home, and dinnertime seems to be the only time of day I can get every member of the family in the same room at the same time. It’s the time of day we sit down, unplug, and connect with each other, but I often fall into a rut when it comes to what to make for dinner.

What I loved most about this book is that it is 100% relatable. With 2 busy kids, a husband who travels, and all the madness that comes with our daily lives, the struggle over what’s for dinner is REAL. There are recipes that appeal to all palates are easy enough that my kids could jump in and help. The layout is pretty, colorful, and easy to follow (also great for cooking with kids). And I think the recipes for spice blends alone are a gem—they would make great gifts.

Rachel Hollis' main meal recipes truly are ready for almost anyone's real life prime time. Plus, what an altogether fresh, fun book design bound (and bound) to stay open on a table or recipe stand so you easily can reference where you are when preparing the current culinary delight. Each left-hand page features title, description, and an enticing portrait of the dish itself; right-hand page details ingredients, directions – "method" if you want to rock some pretension – and photographs of the recipe in progress.

Front of the book includes a narrative intro to Rachel's background and families, a revolutionary overview of table manners, a list of essential ingredients always to keep on hand, and a two-page spread of four of her favorite spice-herb blends. Chapters full of traditional Americana fare along with ethnically-inspired cuisine mostly relate to the usual evening meal of dinner, but of course you can flex time everything for your schedule and preferences.

Rachel has tested all these limited-ingredient, generally simple dishes on her family that's pictured throughout the approximately 200 pages. As soon as I started reading, I knew Real Life Dinners would be far more than an attractive shelf-sitter, though I don't yet know what I'll venture to make first. I love that Rachel lives locally to me in the city of Los Angeles, though she doesn't mention which neighborhood. The much MUCH too small type of the ingredients lists and the index is the only thing I'd revise for future editions of Real Life Dinners.

The recipe format for this cookbook is truly user-friendly.
Each recipe has a full color photo, many with smaller tutorial photos. The name of each recipe is in large clear print and the instructions are also clear, in easy-to-follow sequence.
There are prep and cook times included as well.

The cookbook is divided into chapters such as Salad for Dinner, Kid-Friendly Dinners, and Sides for Dinner.
All of the dinners are one main course.

The recipes are for the most part very easy, many are new twists on old favorites, such as Jalapeno Mashed Potatoes and Street Corn Salad.

Hollis doesn't hesitate to make use of ready-made items: refrigerated pie crusts for example. I appreciate her approach, but if you want to make all of your components by hand, go for it.

Hollis has a blog following of which I was not aware, thus many of her readers will be interested in the inclusion of personal family matters; I am not.

She includes a chapter entitled “Table Manners,” which is adamant about teaching children how to behave at the table.
Elbows on the table are taboo; I was amused by a photo that shows her doing that very thing.

If you like straightforward recipes, or are a beginning cook, this is an ideal cookbook for you.
If you are a fan of Rachel Hollis, so much the better.

This book is chock full of great quick recipes for busy families! I have tried six different recipes ( as of today)and my family has loved every single one. Several I have already made a couple times at my family's request.( The Dr Pepper Pulled Pork and Bacon Wrapped Chicken Tenders are AWESOME!)

Rachel uses easy to find ingredients for a home cooked meal that doesn't take your whole evening to prepare. I loved the fact that it was filled with nice photos of the finished product, easy to read recipes and some fun family photos of Rach and her crew. If you've ever seen her blogs or read her prior cookbook, you will be pleasantly surprised with this book.

I was thankful to be chosen for the launch group to be some of the first to try the recipe sampler of this phenomenal book. I am preordering the book for myself, and if history is any indication with Rachel's books, I will also order for friends and family. ;) (Father's Day, Birthdays, Christmas...!)

* I received an early PDF of this cookbook so I could review and leave my honest opinion. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review. It really IS that good, folks!*

I was first introduced to Rachel Hollis when she served on a panel at BlogHer '16 in Los Angeles. All three women on the panel were great, but Rachel was fabulous and dispensing truth with great emphasis the entire time. I LOVED her and immediately started following her on social media. I purchased her first cook book and then Girl, Wash Your Face.

If I would have known how much I would relate to that book....I probably would have tackled her after the panel and earned myself a chapter on how to deal with crazy fans.

While her first cookbook was nice, this one really fits my life. Nothing overly complicated....a lot of simple recipes and all fairly healthy and many A LOT more healthy than the dinners I eat now.

There are not an outrageous number of portion sizes in this book, so adjustments would be relatively easy for a single wanting to prep for the week ahead or a family larger than Rachel's. Everything is well-explained, and the photographs are great.

OMG! A cookbook I can really use! So many cookbooks I have gotten might have one or two recipes I might try but end up not trying them because going to the store for special ingredients is a pain in hot summer months.

This cookbook is fun to read, the pictures of the food are beautiful and the recipes are SO easy to follow and the ingredients are like right in my pantry for a lot of them.

This is a cookbook for everyone, especially for those of us wanting something great to eat with very little effort put forth.

I love this book and what a great gift idea for housewarmings, first apartments and so on. Get a basket and put this in with some spices and spatulas and towels and you will be proud to give it as a gift.

The only thing that would make this book more perfect would be to have it spiral bound :)

Rachel does it again! I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, and was SO excited to dive into it! I tried several recipes from the book, the lemon pesto chicken being our favorite, and they do not disappoint! The recipes are easy, fast, and totally kid-friendly (while still being adult approved!). I love that many of the ingredients are things I already have on hand. As a busy, working from home mom, I appreciate the ease and functionality of this cookbook. I also love how the steps are shown through beautiful photographs! My five year old daughter loves to follow along and help in the kitchen, and these pics have been a great resource for her too. Another note, many of these recipes are super easy to swap out a couple ingredients to become gluten free! A big plus in our house!

This is my new favorite cookbook!!!! Rachel Hollis does it again with family friendly recipes that are sure to please the whole family (even the pickiest of eaters!!)! Every meal I have made from this book has gotten rave reviews and been added to our ‘favorites’ list! They are all very simple recipes using easy to come by and ‘normal’ ingredients. You won’t have to be going to 4 different stores to track down your ingredients!!
I received a digital sampler from the publishing company.

I love this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and contain simple ingredients. The first chapter addresses table manners which is great for the family. The next chapter addresses pantry essentials. I love how simple the pantry essential list is, nothing crazy. The third chapter is where Rachel has her spice blends listed. These spice blends she makes and keeps on hand. Again, nothing too crazy here. I love the simplicity of Rachel's recipes. The recipes include fabulous pictures which I find a must for a good cookbook. There is a chapter on kid friendly dinners which is great for getting those kids in the kitchen. This cookbook is a keeper!

I have enjoyed cooking the recipes in "Real Life Dinners". like that I can find the ingredients at my local grocery store, and not have to visit multiple stores just to put together a recipe. I love that each recipe has pictures of the steps and a backstory of why Rachel Hollis included it in the cookbook. I have found these recipes to be easy to make, and they aren't time intensive, and they are delicious. My husband has thanked me and requested some of these meals to made again and again. I will admit two recipes in "Real Life Dinners" motivated me to use my brand new cast iron skillet. By brand new I mean the one we received as a wedding gift five years ago, and haven't used until reading the Breakfast Pizza and Crispy Sweet Potato Bake recipes! My personal favorite recipe is the Spaghetti Carbonara on page 201. So when you buy "Real Life Dinners" turn to page 201, make a grocery list, drive to the store, and then go home and make a dish that will make your mouth and tummy oh so happy.

I love everything Rachel Hollis does and was thrilled to see this new cookbook! However, as someone who has to eat completely gluten and soy free, and mostly dairy free I wondered how many of the meals would work for our family.

When I got the cookbook I was pleasantly surprised! There are so many recipes that are gluten free or could easily be adapted.

We love the huevos rancheros, avocado tuna boats, and the Brussels Sprouts recipe to name a few. I’ll be able to make almost all the salads and soups. Also excited to try out the grill recipes this summer! Recipes that use ingredients with gluten could easily be adapted with what I have on hand.

Another thing I loved is that the cookbook opens with the story of the adoption of the Hollis’ daughter and what meal times mean to them. As someone who wants to cultivate our family’s roots, especially over meal times, I loved that touch.

Disclosure: I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher.

Real Life Dinners by Rachel Hollis is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late April.

Hollis comes off as approachable, very non-bourgeois, and is really upfront about her busy life. The photos are admittedly imperfect renditions of a finished product, but the overhead mid-prep ones are surprisingly tidy. I ended up loving her take on homemade hot pockets for their just-like-brand-name flaky topcrust, as well crab cakes that are fresh and minimally dressed with wheat bread crumbs, lemon, and Greek yogurt.

I’m super excited to give these yummy recipes a try. We don’t have much time to cook at night but so many of these recipes are super easy and/or involve steps that can be done ahead of time. I also love that they lend themselves to substitutions for one child who likes this while another child likes that.....you catch my drift! I’m pretty positive I won’t be able to make my food look as beautiful as the pictures in the book but I’m sure it will be just as yummy! Thanks for hitting it out of the park again, Rachel!

As an avid cookbook collector many collect dust. Sad but true. Too Fussy of meals, strange ingredients, kids won’t eat it, takes too long, all the excuses. This one however is just as it says, Real life Dinners, Real things real families can get on the table in a busy tuesday or a leisurely sunday. New ways of making Brinners (breakfast for dinner) which is my kids favorite. Salads to leave you full and not bored with them. This cookbook is not going on a shelf to collect dust any time soon!

This is a great cookbook for a beginner. Which is what I am. The dinners are not terribly inventive, but that's not the point. It has recipes that will appeal to all ages of kids as well as the adults. The ingredient lists are short and probably obvious to more seasoned cooks. Each recipe includes a photo, which is the best part of a cookbook. I am not familiar with the author, but nonetheless, I do like this cookbook!

This cookbook was fun to read! Most of the cookbooks I have are just recipe after recipe, many without pictures. Real life dinners is just like it sounds. The recipes are practical, doable, nutritious things you can make for your whole family. The storytelling behind the recipes and the step by step picture instructions are like having a friend come alongside you in the kitchen and help you. Don't know what to make for dinner, and need suggestions? Rachel Hollis has got you covered.
I made several dishes from the book - lemon pesto chicken, italian grilled chicken (we've done this one almost every week for the last month!), biscuit pizzas (the kids loved these), pineapple chicken stir fry, and freeze ahead burritos. We enjoyed all of them, and looking forward to trying more! With summer here, the salads are next on my list!

Real Life Dinners is a great cookbook for people who are new to cooking, new to meal planning or those that might want to change up their weeknight dinner routine.

I’m a dietitian and love teaching people how to prepare simple and nutritious meals for themselves and their families, this has so many great options and bonus, they don’t break the bank!! I’ve always wanted to create a cookbook that includes simple meal ideas, spice mixes and tips/tricks...Rachel basically beat me to it! ?

Like some reviewers have said a lot of these recipes are similar to dishes I already make but I think they are great base recipes that you can easily adapt/change to fit the needs/preferences of you and your family...and I guarantee along with the familiar, you’ll find new recipes to try. I can’t get enough of the turkey lettuce wraps!

I would have given it another star, but I think the measurements and servings are off a bit and there are a few tidbits missing throughout different recipes, but like Rachel said, when in doubt, bake at 350!!

My sweet husband gifted me this book because I havd been in a cooking rut. While I love to cook, with 3 small children, a busy husband and a full plate (see what I did there ?) as a stay at home mom, ornate, overly complicated dinners are so NOT my jam! So, what happens? Well, personally, I end up in a rut, churning whatever “old faithful” meals I know my family will eat. While im happy to be getting dinner on the table, it definitley doesnt help get my creative juices flowing.

Enter Rachels book. All of her meals are exactly as advertised: real dinners, that real families can really put together. Is this book going to teach you how to make a 9 course meal with frogs legs, and stuffed duck liver as some of your ingredients to create said meals? No. And I’m oh so thankful for that! Rachel gives us user friendly, totally doable dinners that help boost your cooking confidence and add just a little extra sizzle to your meal time repertoire.

So, grab your copy, prepare to feel TOTALLY capable and buen provecho-bon apetite- dig in!
