War Horse (Scholastic Gold)
War Horse (Scholastic Gold)

Review:This story is fantastic. It is about a horse named Joey who gets taken away from his owner (Albert) and is sold to the military.
Joey goes through hard training , battle, and losses and remained a sturdy work horse.
Even though the book is told from the horse's point of view, you get a great amount of details about the people around him.
There is also a big question: will Albert ever find Joey again?Through Joey we receive a message of hope and the search for peace in the midst of a ba... Read more

An enthralling story of love and passion and Hollywood glamour
An enthralling story of love and passion and Hollywood glamour

Review:The story line was acceptable but would have been better if characters and story were more developed.. The writing was repetitious. Kept thinking I might have enjoyed this much more if I was a teenager rather than an adult. It seemed the main topic was really superficial hollywood film information rather than the affair. Grave Mercy: Book 1 of His Fair Assassin Series
Grave Mercy: Book 1 of His Fair Assassin Series

Review:Not my typical read, but a enjoyable change of pace. I was a little worried by the first few chapters, but that changed suddenly and I found myself so engaged that I couldn't put the book down. Dark Mercy has action, romance, a compelling story line, and believable, well developed characters set in the 1400's. It is marketed as a teen book, although I don't think I would recommend it to my young teenage daughter, but I am conservative in this regard. A great read! Read more

Tides of War: A Novel
Tides of War: A Novel

Review:Steven Pressfield has made a cottage industry of the historical novel in much the same way as Michael Shaara. Historical fiction offers wondrous advantages to the writer---after all, who needs to generate story ideas when the lives of our forbears offers all the triumph and tragedy we need?
Pressfield debuted in the genre with the marvelous "Gates of Fire", his account of Spartan King Leonidas' last stand at Thermopylae. With "Tides of War", he returns to ancient Greek history, this time re... Read more

The Impossible Knife of Memory
The Impossible Knife of Memory

Review:I thought this book sounded wonderful, but it's just "ok". It has good information in it - particularly the afterword - and it has a good message. What I didn't like were the comparisons to superheros and the pictures that were very football oriented - that did not appeal to my daughter at all. It was written more to appeal to boys I think, which is ironic considering it's a book about a woman with the potential to motivate girls to be politically active. By making the comparisons to footbal... Read more
