Historical Fiction
Review:Detailed characters, interesting plot. Dialogue was well written, and editing was pretty good. I also liked the epilogue, with a clear and satisfying ending. Loved the secondary characters as well.
The only drawbacks were minor. The love scenes were not well written. They were not as explicit as some and not as chaste as others. The author seemed to want to fall in the middle but it left them a bit awkward and underwhelming for the reader. Part of the plot was about nessa wanting to exper... Read more
Review:I really enjoyed this story and will likely read it again. The main characters are likeable and develop as the story evolves. The overall plot is formulaic but not in a bad way. It allows for enjoyment of the story without wondering about the outcome. Read more
Review:The book was good, written well and easy to read. The characters were warm with real feeling conversations and actions. There was enough action to keep me in suspense and excited to get to the next page. Will get the next book for sure. Read more
Review:Everyone should read this story. In fact, many of us are required to in school. It's a great, accessible story told by a narrator you really root for. This edition is nice, with a few of those typos common to scanned books. It isn't abridged, which is key. Read more
Review:For years I have heard historical fiction fans rave about Simon's The Bronze Horseman series. I have diligently purchased all three books, just haven't gotten around to reading them yet (piles and piles of books around here that need reading!). So when I saw that her newest novel, Children of Liberty, was actually a prequel to her well-received trilogy, I thought this was the perfect place to start. (Always start at the beginning, right?) As it turned out, the novel just didn't 'grab' me. I... Read more
Review:This short, charming prequel gives a glimpse into Nile's life in the Ashing navy. It also illuminates Nile's fears and values which play a large role in the series overall: value of order, loyalty to country, fear of isolation.
I definitely recommend it to fans of Tides or anyone interested in getting a taste of the series.
On another note: The hour I spent reading this was more enjoyable than watching a movie rental, so it is worth the $3.

Review:I love history. My wife loves history. Our daughter -- not so much. So to get her to learn, we have to make it fun. The Dear America series is a great way to do just that.
The book is written as a young girl's journal, and is so realistic that a disclaimer has to be included to remind the reader that the book is,k in fact, a work of fiction. My daughter enjoyed the story because of the story, and ended up learning things along the way.
This isn't the first Dear America book we... Read more

Review:The lack of authenticity flavors this tale from the beginning. If you are a Georgette Heyer fan, you won't enjoy this. It feels as if certain historical facts have been carefully placed, but the characters aren't right. It's almost as if they're not real to the author, therefore they're two dimensional. Read more
Review:I read Me Before You and needed more! Loved every character In that one. Sheltering Rain is not the same. The characters are not as strong and endearing. Confusing at times. Will try something else. Read more
