Review:The writer is clearly talented but frankly I tire of "revenge" memoirs that take on folks (usually parents) who are no longer here to defend themselves. This writer seems to make being a "victim" a career, which she disguises as being quirky. I completed the book, because I'm interested in memoir writing, but should have spent my time (and money) on something else. Read more
Review:Looking around America today, it's hard to understand what it was like to be homosexual just a few decades ago. Not to say that it's easy today, but once upon a time, one's very existence was a crime. Cleve Jones grew up in that environment, bullied and tormented even before he knew why. He escaped to San Francisco, where he discovered a world that revolved around people like himself. Driven by the emergence of a man named Harvey Milk, Jones entered the political and social fray, becoming one of... Read more
Review:Rachel is an incredible woman and her strength and character depicted beautifully throughout the book. This book had me in tears, hysterically laughing and enthralled. I couldn't put it down. Its heartbreaking what has happened to the girls Rachel describes but amazing to see the work GEMS does to help. Read more
Review:This charming, well-written memoir looks fondly at the comical parts while skating deftly past the more difficult parts of growing up Iranian in America. As someone just a bit older than the author, I can't imagine it was easy for an Iranian family in the years after the revolution. But she makes it looks easy. The book's humor and discretion make for easy reading, but it also begs for perhaps just a touch more of the dark, to balance out the light. Read more

Review:I have never known or be around anyone with autism or similar. Saw her on The Dr's. I was curious how she had accomplished what she had done. Very interesting on how hard and long it took her to get where she is today. It is amazing how she has pushed herself and how lucky she is for parents who never gave up and were willing and able to do whatever it took to help get her to this point. Maybe one day she will be able to voice it for real. A must read to learn what the person with autism i... Read more
Review:Warning: This book is funny in places. BUT the humor is a bit overshadowed by the very very frequent use of the word F*ck. She also tends to take a lot of political and anti-religious stances. There is some really great material it is just to bad that it wasnt pulled together better. If you are thinking about buying this book go read parts of it at Borders or buy it used. Save your money. Review:Well written. I'm getting my degree in social work, I learned about Leslie Morgan Steiner from a video I had to watch for my family development and decided I wanted to read this book. It was disturbing to read about the abuse that happened to her. Although,I thought this was a really good book. Read more
