The recipes are great but honestly I have no idea what I was thinking ordering a cook book for my kindle. That platform is just not suitable for cook books. How am I going to flip through this to find what I want to cook? No idea. Clearly didn't think this the whole way through.

If you are going to buy this, and the recipes are certainly worth it, buy the actual book.

I wanted one vegetarian cookbook that would cover the gamet of meatless cooking. This was the one. Just like Julia Child and her Mastering French cookbooks, this one will now be my go to vegetarian book.

I have the original version of this cookbook, which I use so often that the binding is splitting and the pages are stained...so how wonderful that there is an updated version newly released! I put it on my wishlist and was recently gifted a copy for my birthday.

Alas, I think I will be returning it. Though I love the updated cover (gorgeous), I am very disappointed in the reformatting of all the recipes. Though Mark Bittman's books are similarly formatted, there are graphic callouts in his books which help to truly teach you about cooking. The original Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone also felt warm and instructional, and now I'm realizing that it was the formatting--not just the verbiage--that contributed to that.

So if you have the original, don't rush to replace it. You might prefer it, after all. If this is a new book to you, it is wonderful, with many fantastic recipes....but a lot to take in on a page.

When buying a cookbook on the store it would be useful to see a few of the actual recipes instead of just the introductory section which is usually about what to keep in your pantry and how to cook vegetables.

I LOVE this cookbook, in fact, that is an understatement. There is nothing I have made from this book that we haven't loved. The food is flavorful, easy enough to make on a week night, and healthy. Deborah gives great advice and tips for each recipe. This cookbook sits on my coffee table and I will routinely page through it looking at all the recipes I have yet to cover. I have had the book a few months, and it already looks loved from being carried around my home, from living room to kitchen, like a child's favorite toy. You will not be disappointed by this cookbook.

The recipes are dull and the typography and lack of pictures make it not even fun to read. I buy a lot of cookbooks but for stimulating, novel, vegetarian cooking I would recommend rather Ottholenghi, or any of the Moro cookbooks. I just found this book utterly leaden or the recipes I do make I already make from other cookbooks (my collection of Indian cookbooks, for example). If you are already a good cook or have wide experience of other ethnic cuisines this book is completely unnecessary and Madison is not an engaging writer.

Haha, when my vegetarian husband retired last year and expressed an interest in cooking, I eagerly bought this book for him, hoping it would engage his interest. However, he has taken on a full-time involvement with music (guitar, singing, tuba) so the book lies unopened on the table in the family room. I skimmed through it and it looks wonderful and I hope that one of these days he'll notice it again and start using it. I'm done with cooking in this lifetime, but if I still enjoyed it, it would be my go-to cookbook, even though I'm not a vegetarian.

Disappointed with the basic look of the book - doesn't make you want to run to the kitchen and break out the pots and pans, no pictures, very bland presentation. Also, I found most of the recipes required exotic or unusual ingredients so they are not dishes you can whip up at the last minute; they take extra trips to the grocery store and planning in advance. If you have plenty of time and enjoy running all over town to locate ingredients this is the book for you...could be a great book for a truly gourmet chef.

I cannot believe that such a comprehensive book, when it comes to falafel, fails to give you a recipe and advices you to buy a pre made mixture - granted, I just got the book today, but hey, one of the first recipes I look for is nowhere to be found, furthermore, I'm advised to buy a pre-made commercial mix - who knows what it contains, part of being a vegetarian is trying to be healthier!

Shame on you!

I will continue to review the book, but for starters, it does not look that great - is it that common for people to rest on their laurels?

Shame on you!

The author's bias, and anti-science background, came out through the introduction and into the next excerpt. Please don't be fooled: the only genetically-enhanced crops available in your local grocery are zucchini, squash and papaya. They were on the verge of extinction thanks to devastating plant viruses.

Organic in no way means grown without pesticides. It means grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. The organic, i.e. pre-World War II, methods for the same ends can be caustic and dangerous. Tractor-mounted propane burners can be used for orchard weed control; Bordeaux mix results in copper pollution; and other examples continue to demonstrate that organic does not mean sustainable.

Typical pesticide recommendation rates now have active ingredients in pints or even ounces per acre; down from gallons in the days of Silent Spring. The goal of agricultural science is to provide everyone, whether they can live within a few miles of a farm or not, with safe and healthy food. I am all for getting more fruits and vegetables to every table, but that can't be accomplished by a retreat to the Dark Ages.
